American Minimum Wage vs Australian Pay: How to Convert Hourly to Annual Salary

Based on the National Minimum Wage of $26.44 per hour for a 38-hour week, annual gross pay is approximately $52,270 before tax and super.

Converting Hourly to Annual Pay: The Australian Way

Whether you are comparing an offer from overseas or checking your own rate, understanding how to convert an hourly wage to an annual salary is essential. In Australia, the standard full-time week is 38 hours, and the formula is straightforward: hourly rate × hours per week × 52. This gives you gross annual pay before tax, super, and other deductions.

For example, the National Minimum Wage from 1 July 2026 is $26.44 per hour. Assuming a 38-hour week, the annual gross is $26.44 × 38 × 52 = $52,270.44. This is the baseline set by the Fair Work Commission, but many workers earn more under award rates or enterprise agreements.

The American Minimum Wage in Context

Compared to the American minimum wage, Australia’s National Minimum Wage is substantially higher, reflecting different labour market conditions and cost-of-living factors. While the US federal minimum wage remains lower, Australian workers also benefit from compulsory superannuation and stronger award protections. This guide helps you make sense of the numbers when converting between hourly and annual figures.

Understanding the Components of Your Pay

Base Hourly Rate and Award Rates

The National Minimum Wage applies to employees not covered by an award or agreement. However, most industries have modern awards that set higher minimum rates for specific roles. The Fair Work Ombudsman publishes pay guides for each award. If you have a salary offer, you can use the hourly conversion tool to see the equivalent hourly rate.

Casual Loading

If you are a casual employee, you are entitled to a 25% loading on top of the base rate. This compensates for not receiving paid leave. For the minimum wage, the casual rate is $26.44 × 1.25 = $33.05 per hour. The casual loading page explains how this works. When using the timesheet calculator, simply check the box to add 25% loading – never type a rate that already includes it.

Superannuation Guarantee

Super is paid on top of your ordinary earnings. From 1 July 2026, the super guarantee is 12% of your ordinary time earnings, up to the maximum contribution base of $270,830 per year. For a minimum wage worker, that adds about $6,272 per year to your retirement savings. See the super and packaging page for more details.

Tax and Medicare Levy

Your annual gross pay is taxed using the 2026–27 resident rates. The tax-free threshold is $18,200, then 15% up to $45,000, 30% up to $135,000, 37% up to $190,000, and 45% above that. The Medicare levy is generally 2% of taxable income. The take-home pay page shows how these deductions affect your net income.

State Differences in Ordinary-Time Earnings

While the National Minimum Wage is uniform, average earnings vary significantly across states and territories. The Australian Bureau of Statistics (ABS) publishes Average Weekly Earnings data. For May 2026, the national figure for full-time adult ordinary time earnings was $2,083.70 per week. However, state-level averages differ – for example, mining-intensive states like Western Australia tend to have higher averages, while others may be lower. The average pay page provides more context. These differences reflect industry mix, cost of living, and labour demand. When comparing a salary offer, consider the state where you will work.

Fortnightly Pay and Budgeting

Many Australian employers pay fortnightly. To find your fortnightly gross, multiply your weekly pay by two. For a minimum wage worker on 38 hours: $26.44 × 38 = $1,004.72 per week, so $2,009.44 per fortnight. This can help with budgeting and comparing to salary offers that are quoted annually. The reference tables include conversion factors.

Important Assumptions and Limitations

Annual pay here is hourly rate × hours per week × 52. It assumes the same rate every week, no unpaid overtime, no penalty rates, no allowances, and no salary sacrifice. Super is estimated at 12% of ordinary earnings only, paid on top, and stops at the $270,830 maximum contribution base. Tax is the 2026–27 resident scale with the full tax-free threshold. Medicare uses the 2025–26 single reduction thresholds because the 2026–27 reduction thresholds were not confirmed here. HELP, the Medicare levy surcharge, and salary packaging are not deducted. This is an estimate, not a determination of your pay or tax.

Questions people ask next

How is casual loading applied?

Casual loading is an additional 25% on top of the base hourly rate, paid in lieu of leave entitlements such as annual leave and sick leave. For the National Minimum Wage, this means a casual rate of $33.05 per hour. The calculator has a checkbox to add this loading; do not enter a rate that already includes casual loading.

What is the super guarantee rate for 2026–27?

The super guarantee is 12% of ordinary earnings, paid on top of your salary by your employer. It applies up to the maximum contribution base of $270,830 per year. The estimate here uses 12% of ordinary earnings only.

How does the 2026–27 tax scale work?

The resident tax rates for 2026–27 are: nil on the first $18,200, 15% from $18,201 to $45,000, 30% from $45,001 to $135,000, 37% from $135,001 to $190,000, and 45% above $190,000. The Medicare levy is generally 2%. The calculator uses the full tax-free threshold and the 2025–26 Medicare reduction thresholds.
