Anaesthetic Technician Salary: Hourly Rates, Annual Pay, and Fortnightly Breakdown
For a full-time anaesthetic technician on 38 hours per week, annual gross pay is hourly rate × 38 × 52, with super paid on top.
Understanding the anaesthetic technician salary in Australia
If you're an anaesthetic technician or considering the role, knowing how your hourly rate translates into annual, fortnightly, and weekly pay is essential. This guide explains the standard calculation using a 38-hour week and a 52-week year, and covers award rates, casual loading, superannuation, and tax. We rely on data from the Fair Work Ombudsman, the Fair Work Commission, and the Australian Taxation Office.
The standard calculation: hourly × hours per week × 52
For a full-time employee working 38 hours each week, the formula is straightforward:
Annual gross pay = hourly rate × 38 hours × 52 weeks
This assumes the same rate every week, no unpaid overtime, and no penalty rates or allowances. It's a base estimate. For example, if your hourly rate is $35.00, your annual gross is $35 × 38 × 52 = $69,160.
To find your fortnightly pay, multiply your weekly pay by two. Weekly pay is hourly rate × 38. So at $35 per hour, weekly pay is $1,330, and fortnightly is $2,660.
Award minimums for anaesthetic technicians
Anaesthetic technicians are typically covered by the Health Professionals and Support Services Award 2020 (MA000027). The Fair Work Commission sets minimum rates through annual wage reviews, and the Fair Work Ombudsman publishes updated pay guides with the exact classification rates. From 1 July 2026, award minimum wages increased by 4.75% following the Annual Wage Review. The National Minimum Wage also rose to $26.44 per hour (or $1,004.90 per week for 38 hours).
Qualified anaesthetic technicians generally earn above the National Minimum Wage. The award contains specific pay levels based on experience and qualifications. To find your precise rate, check the pay guide for the Health Professionals and Support Services Award on the Fair Work Ombudsman website.
Casual loading and its effect on your anaesthetic technician salary
If you work as a casual, you're entitled to a 25% loading on top of the base hourly rate. This compensates for not receiving paid leave entitlements. The loading is applied to the ordinary hourly rate before calculating annual pay.
Important: When using our timesheet, enter your base hourly rate (without casual loading). Then check the casual loading box to add 25% on top. Do not enter a rate that already includes the loading.
For example, if your base award rate is $30.00 per hour, the casual rate becomes $37.50. Your annual gross as a casual would be $37.50 × 38 × 52 = $74,100. The casual loading page explains more.
Superannuation: paid on top of your gross pay
Employers must pay superannuation at 12% of your ordinary earnings (from 1 July 2026) into a complying super fund. This is on top of your gross salary, up to the maximum contribution base of $270,830. Super does not reduce your take-home pay; it's an additional benefit.
For instance, if your annual gross is $70,000, your employer contributes $8,400 to super. Your total remuneration package is $78,400, but your take-home pay is based on the $70,000. See super and packaging for more details.
Tax and Medicare levy on your anaesthetic technician salary
Your gross annual pay is subject to income tax and the Medicare levy. For the 2026–27 financial year, the resident tax rates are:
- Nil on the first $18,200
- 15% on income from $18,201 to $45,000
- 30% on income from $45,001 to $135,000
- 37% on income from $135,001 to $190,000
- 45% on income above $190,000
The Medicare levy is generally 2% of your taxable income. Using the example of $69,160 annual gross, tax would be approximately $11,267 plus Medicare of $1,383, leaving a take-home of about $56,510 (before any deductions). The take-home pay page can help estimate your net income.
Fortnightly pay and budgeting
Knowing your fortnightly pay helps with budgeting. Simply multiply your weekly gross by two. For a full-time employee on $35 per hour, fortnightly gross is $2,660. After tax and Medicare, your net fortnightly might be around $2,173 (estimate). Use the reference tables for quick conversions.
Distinguishing minimum wage, award rates, and market rates
The National Minimum Wage ($26.44 per hour) is the legal floor for award-free employees. Most anaesthetic technicians are covered by an award, which sets higher minimum rates. Market rates may be higher again, especially in private hospitals or with experience. Always check your specific award classification.
