Average Salary Sydney: How to Calculate Your Annual Pay from an Hourly Rate with Casual Loading and Super

For a 38-hour week, annual gross pay is hourly rate × 38 × 52, with super paid on top of ordinary earnings.

Understanding Your Pay: From Hourly to Annual

When you have an hourly rate or a salary offer, converting to annual pay helps you compare. The standard formula is hourly rate × hours per week × 52. For most full-time roles, we assume 38 hours per week, as per the Fair Work Ombudsman's definition. This gives you a gross annual figure before tax and super.

The Formula in Practice

If you earn $30 per hour and work 38 hours each week, your annual gross pay is $30 × 38 × 52 = $59,280. This assumes the same rate every week, no unpaid overtime, no penalty rates, and no allowances. For a fortnightly view, multiply your weekly pay by 2: $30 × 38 = $1,140 per week, so $2,280 per fortnight.

National Minimum Wage and Award Rates

The Fair Work Commission sets the National Minimum Wage. From 1 July 2026, it is $26.44 per hour, or $1,004.90 per week for 38 hours. If you are a casual employee, you receive a 25% casual loading, making the minimum casual rate $33.05 per hour. Many awards and enterprise agreements set higher rates. Always check your specific award or agreement. For industry averages, the Australian Bureau of Statistics (ABS) publishes Average Weekly Earnings. In May 2026, full-time adult ordinary time earnings were $2,083.70 per week. All employees total earnings (including part-time) averaged $1,579.20 per week. These are averages, not the median for your job. For job-specific pay, refer to job pay resources.

Casual Loading and Superannuation

Casual loading of 25% is paid on top of the base hourly rate to compensate for lack of leave entitlements. If you are a casual, your hourly rate should already include this loading. Do not add it again. Our the timesheet allows you to check a box to add 25% casual loading to a base rate. Superannuation is paid on top of your ordinary earnings. The super guarantee rate is 12% from 1 July 2026, but only up to the maximum contribution base of $270,830 per year. Super is not deducted from your pay; it is an additional cost to your employer. For more details, see super and packaging.

Tax and Take-Home Pay

Tax is calculated using the 2026–27 resident tax rates: nil up to $18,200, 15% from $18,201 to $45,000, 30% from $45,001 to $135,000, 37% from $135,001 to $190,000, and 45% above $190,000. The Medicare levy is generally 2% of taxable income, with reductions for low-income earners based on 2025–26 thresholds (as 2026–27 reductions were not confirmed). This estimate does not include HELP repayments, Medicare levy surcharge, or salary packaging. Use our take-home pay calculator for a more detailed estimate.

Average Salary Sydney

When looking at the average salary Sydney, the ABS data provides a useful benchmark. For full-time adult ordinary time earnings in Sydney, the average weekly earnings are slightly above the national figure due to the city's higher cost of living. However, remember that this is an average across all industries and occupations, not the median for your specific role. To compare your offer, convert your hourly rate to annual using the 38-hour week formula. For example, if you are offered $35 per hour, your annual gross is $35 × 38 × 52 = $69,160. Add super of 12% ($8,299.20) on top, making total employment cost $77,459.20. Your take-home pay after tax and Medicare would be approximately $54,000 (estimate). This is a rough guide; use our hourly conversion tool for precise calculations.

Fortnightly Pay

Many employers pay fortnightly. Your fortnightly gross is your weekly pay multiplied by 2. For the $35 per hour example, weekly pay is $1,330, so fortnightly is $2,660. Super is calculated on each pay period's ordinary earnings.

Important Disclaimer

This estimate assumes the same rate every week, no unpaid overtime, no penalty rates, no allowances, and no salary sacrifice. Super is estimated at 12% of ordinary earnings only, paid on top, and stops at the $270,830 maximum contribution base. Tax uses the 2026–27 resident scale with full tax-free threshold. Medicare uses the 2025–26 single reduction thresholds because the 2026–27 reduction thresholds were not confirmed. HELP, Medicare levy surcharge, and salary packaging are not deducted. This is an estimate, not a determination of your pay or tax.

Questions people ask next

How do I convert my hourly rate to an annual salary?

Multiply your hourly rate by the number of hours you work per week, then multiply by 52. For a standard full-time role, assume 38 hours per week. For example, $30 per hour × 38 × 52 = $59,280 gross per year. This does not include super, which is paid on top.

What is casual loading and how does it affect my pay?

Casual loading is an additional 25% paid on top of the base hourly rate to compensate for not receiving paid leave. If you are a casual, your rate should already include this loading. Our calculator has a checkbox to add 25% loading to a base rate. Do not add it again if your rate already includes it.

How is superannuation calculated on my pay?

Super is 12% of your ordinary earnings, paid by your employer on top of your salary. It is not deducted from your pay. The maximum contribution base is $270,830 per year. For example, on a $60,000 salary, super would be $7,200 per year.
