Average Teacher Salary Australia: Award Rates and How to Calculate Your Annual Pay
Under the Educational Services (Teachers) Award, a full-time teacher at Level 1 earns $75,941 per year based on 38 hours per week.
Understanding the Average Teacher Salary Australia
When people search for the average teacher salary Australia, they often want a single number. In reality, teacher pay varies by classification, experience, and the type of service. The most authoritative source is the Fair Work Ombudsman’s Educational Services (Teachers) Award 2020, which sets minimum rates for teachers in preschools, schools, and long day care centres. This article explains how to convert those hourly or weekly rates into an annual figure, and what that means for your take-home pay, tax, and superannuation.
Award Rates for Teachers
The award covers five classification levels. For a full-time teacher in a preschool or school, the minimum weekly and annual rates from 1 July 2026 are:
- Level 1 (graduate teacher): $1,455.40 per week, $75,941 per year
- Level 2 (proficient accreditation): $1,590.70 per week, $83,004 per year
- Level 3 (proficient after 3 years at Level 2): $1,731.70 per week, $90,362 per year
- Level 4 (proficient after 3 years at Level 3): $1,872.70 per week, $97,720 per year
- Level 5 (Highly Accomplished/Lead Teacher): $2,013.70 per week, $105,076 per year
Teachers in long day care centres (services open at least 8 hours a day, 48 weeks or more) receive an extra 4% on these rates. For example, a Level 1 long day care teacher earns $1,513.60 per week, or $78,979 per year.
These annual figures are calculated by dividing the weekly rate by 52.18 (the number of weeks in a year used by the award). The hourly rate is derived from a 38-hour week. You can find full details in our pay guides and reference tables.
How to Calculate Your Annual Salary from an Hourly Rate
The basic formula is:
Annual gross pay = hourly rate × hours per week × 52
For a full-time teacher under the award, ordinary hours are 38 per week. So if you know your hourly rate, multiply it by 38 and then by 52. For example:
- $38.30 per hour (Level 1) × 38 × 52 = $75,941
- $52.99 per hour (Level 5) × 38 × 52 = $105,076
This matches the award’s annual rates. The formula assumes you work every week of the year with no unpaid leave, overtime, or penalty rates. It is a useful estimate for comparing job offers or planning your budget.
Fortnightly Pay
Many teachers are paid fortnightly. To find your gross fortnightly pay, multiply your weekly rate by 2. From the award:
- Level 1: $1,455.40 × 2 = $2,910.80 per fortnight
- Level 5: $2,013.70 × 2 = $4,027.40 per fortnight
If you are paid monthly, the award allows payment once every four weeks or mid-month. Your employer should follow the payment method in your contract or enterprise agreement.
Tax and Medicare Levy
Once you have your annual gross salary, you can estimate your tax using the 2026–27 resident tax rates:
- Nil tax on the first $18,200
- 15% on income from $18,201 to $45,000
- 30% on income from $45,001 to $135,000
- 37% on income from $135,001 to $190,000
- 45% on income above $190,000
Most teachers also pay the Medicare levy of 2% of taxable income. For example, a Level 1 teacher on $75,941 would pay:
- Tax: approximately $12,092 (using the 2026–27 scale)
- Medicare levy: $1,519 (2% of $75,941)
- Total deductions: $13,611
- Net annual take-home: about $62,330
Use our take-home pay calculator for a more precise estimate. Remember that HELP debts, the Medicare levy surcharge, and salary packaging are not included here.
Superannuation
Under the award, employers must pay superannuation contributions to avoid the super guarantee charge. From 1 July 2026, the super guarantee rate is 12% of your ordinary time earnings. This is paid on top of your salary, not deducted from it. So a Level 1 teacher’s employer would contribute an extra $9,113 per year (12% of $75,941). The maximum contribution base is $270,830 per year, so super stops accumulating once your earnings exceed that threshold.
Super is not part of your take-home pay, but it is a significant part of your total remuneration. See our super and packaging page for more details.
Casual Loading and Other Considerations
Casual teachers receive a 25% loading on the base hourly rate. However, if a casual teacher is engaged for fewer than five consecutive days, the rate is capped at Level 3 ($45.57 per hour for preschools/schools). For five or more consecutive days, the appropriate classification rate applies plus 25%. A casual teacher working full-time hours for a full year would earn roughly 25% more than a permanent teacher, but casual employment often involves irregular hours and no paid leave. See our casual loading page for more details.
Putting It All Together
The average teacher salary Australia depends on your level and workplace. The award provides a clear minimum, but many teachers are covered by enterprise agreements that offer higher rates. For the most accurate figure, check your specific award or agreement. The formula hourly × 38 × 52 gives a quick annual estimate, and our hourly conversion tool can help you experiment with different rates. Remember to factor in tax, Medicare, and super to understand your full financial picture.
