Bus Driver Salary: Award Rates, Casual Loading, and Annual Pay
A full-time Grade 1 bus driver under the award earns at least $27.34 per hour, or about $54,024 per year for 38 hours per week.
Understanding a Bus Driver Salary
If you're looking at a bus driver salary, the first thing to know is that most bus drivers in Australia are covered by the Passenger Vehicle Transportation Award 2020 from the Fair Work Ombudsman. This award sets minimum hourly rates, penalty rates, and allowances. The National Minimum Wage ($26.44 per hour from 1 July 2026) is the legal floor, but the award rate for a Grade 1 bus driver is higher at $27.34 per hour.
This article explains how to turn that hourly rate into an annual figure, what casual loading means, and how super and tax affect your take-home pay. We'll use the award's Grade 1 rate as our main example, but the same method works for any classification.
How to Calculate Annual Pay from an Hourly Rate
The basic formula is:
Annual gross pay = hourly rate × hours per week × 52 weeks
For a full-time bus driver, ordinary hours are 38 per week (as per the award). So for a Grade 1 driver:
$27.34 × 38 × 52 = $54,023.84 per year
That's the gross pay before tax and before super. If you're paid fortnightly, multiply your weekly pay by 2. For Grade 1, that's $1,039.12 per week or $2,078.24 per fortnight.
Part-Time and Casual Drivers
Part-time drivers work fewer than 38 hours per week, and their pay is pro-rata. For example, 20 hours per week at Grade 1 gives $27.34 × 20 × 52 = $28,433.60 per year.
Casual drivers get a 25% loading on top of the base rate. For Grade 1, that's $27.34 × 1.25 = $34.18 per hour. The annual calculation uses the loaded rate: $34.18 × 38 × 52 = $67,539.68 (if working full-time hours). But casuals often work fewer hours, so adjust accordingly.
Award Rates vs National Minimum Wage
The National Minimum Wage is $26.44 per hour. However, the Passenger Vehicle Transportation Award sets higher minimums because of the nature of the work. The award has six grades:
- Grade 1: $27.34
- Grade 2: $27.97
- Grade 3: $29.55
- Grade 4: $30.59
- Grade 5: $32.27
- Grade 6: $33.70
These rates apply to full-time and part-time employees. Casual employees get the 25% loading on top. Always check the award or your enterprise agreement for the correct classification.
Superannuation Paid on Top
Employers must pay superannuation guarantee contributions of 12% of ordinary earnings. This is paid on top of your gross salary, not deducted from it. For a Grade 1 driver earning $54,024, the employer adds $6,482.88 to your super fund each year. The super guarantee has a maximum contribution base of $270,830 per year, so if your earnings exceed that, the 12% only applies up to that limit.
Tax and Medicare
For the 2026–27 financial year, resident tax rates are:
- $0 – $18,200: nil
- $18,201 – $45,000: 15c for each $1 over $18,200
- $45,001 – $135,000: $4,020 plus 30c for each $1 over $45,000
- $135,001 – $190,000: $31,020 plus 37c for each $1 over $135,000
- $190,001+: $51,370 plus 45c for each $1 over $190,000
Plus the Medicare levy of 2% (using 2025–26 single reduction thresholds as 2026–27 thresholds are not confirmed here).
For a Grade 1 driver earning $54,024:
- Tax: $4,020 + 0.30 × ($54,024 – $45,000) = $4,020 + $2,707.20 = $6,727.20
- Medicare: $54,024 × 0.02 = $1,080.48
- Total deductions: $7,807.68
- Estimated take-home pay: $46,216.16 per year ($888.77 per week)
This is an estimate only. It does not include HELP repayments, Medicare levy surcharge, or salary packaging.
Allowances and Penalty Rates
The award includes extra payments for certain conditions:
- Articulated bus allowance: $17.52 per shift
- First aid allowance: $21.33 per week
- Meal allowance: $17.41 per occasion when working more than 2 hours overtime
- Vehicle allowance: $1.00 per km for using your own car
- Penalty rates: 115% for early/late work, 150% for Saturday, 200% for Sunday, 250% for public holidays (for single-driver operations)
Our annual calculation assumes no allowances, no overtime, and no penalty rates. Your actual bus driver salary may be higher if you regularly work weekends or drive an articulated bus.

Summary
A bus driver salary under the Passenger Vehicle Transportation Award starts at $27.34 per hour for Grade 1. For a full-time 38-hour week, that's about $54,024 per year before tax. Casual drivers get 25% extra per hour. Super is 12% on top. Tax and Medicare reduce take-home pay to roughly $46,200 per year for a single person claiming the tax-free threshold. Always check your specific award classification and any enterprise agreement for the exact rates that apply to you.
