Understanding Your Clinical Coder Salary: Hourly to Annual Conversion
For a clinical coder earning the Health Professionals and Support Services Award rate, assuming 38 hours per week, annual gross pay is hourly rate × 38 × 52.
Clinical Coder Salary: From Hourly to Annual
If you work as a clinical coder in Australia, your pay is likely covered by the Health Professionals and Support Services Award 2020 (the Health Services Award). Understanding how your hourly rate translates into annual, fortnightly, and weekly pay helps you budget and compare job offers. This guide explains the conversion, the role of the National Minimum Wage, award rates, casual loading, tax, and superannuation.
The Basic Formula
Annual gross pay = hourly rate × hours per week × 52 weeks.
For a full-time employee, the standard week is 38 hours. If you work part-time or casual, use your actual weekly hours. The formula assumes the same rate every week, no unpaid overtime, and no penalty rates or allowances.
For example, if your clinical coder salary is $30 per hour and you work 38 hours:
- Weekly: $30 × 38 = $1,140
- Fortnightly: $1,140 × 2 = $2,280
- Annual: $30 × 38 × 52 = $59,280
National Minimum Wage vs Award Rates
From 1 July 2026, the National Minimum Wage is $26.44 per hour (or $1,004.90 per week for 38 hours). Casual employees get $33.05 per hour including the 25% casual loading. However, most clinical coders are covered by the Health Services Award, which sets higher minimum rates based on classification. The Fair Work Commission updates these rates annually, and the 2026 data includes changes effective from 1 October 2026 for health professionals.
Always check the award pay guide from the Fair Work Ombudsman to find your exact classification rate. The award rate is your legal minimum; your employer may pay above it.
Casual Loading and Super
If you are a casual clinical coder, your hourly rate includes a 25% loading. When using our timesheet, type your base hourly rate (without loading). The calculator has a checkbox to add the 25% casual loading on top. Do not type a rate that already includes loading.
Superannuation is paid on top of your ordinary earnings at 12% (from 1 July 2026) up to the maximum contribution base of $270,830. For example, on a $59,280 annual salary, your employer contributes $7,113.60 to super. This is not deducted from your pay; it is additional.
Tax and Take-Home Pay
Your annual gross pay is subject to income tax and the Medicare levy. For 2026–27, the resident tax rates are:
- Nil up to $18,200
- 15% from $18,201 to $45,000
- 30% from $45,001 to $135,000
- 37% from $135,001 to $190,000
- 45% above $190,000
The Medicare levy is generally 2% of taxable income. Use our take-home pay tool for a detailed estimate.
Example: Clinical Coder at Award Rate
Suppose your classification under the Health Services Award gives you a base rate of $32.00 per hour (full-time).
- Annual: $32 × 38 × 52 = $63,232
- Fortnightly: $32 × 38 × 2 = $2,432
- Super (12%): $7,587.84 paid on top
- Estimated tax (2026–27, no HELP): approximately $11,717 plus Medicare $1,264, leaving about $50,251 take-home
Note: This is an estimate. Your actual tax depends on your total income, deductions, and whether you have a HELP debt or Medicare levy surcharge.
Why Use the 38-Hour Week?
The 38-hour week is the standard full-time hours under most awards and the National Employment Standards. If you work more or fewer hours, adjust the formula accordingly. Part-time clinical coders should use their contracted weekly hours.
Comparing Job Offers
When comparing a salary offer to an hourly rate, convert both to annual figures. A salaried position may include paid leave, while casual rates include loading but no leave entitlements. Use our average pay page to see how clinical coder salaries compare to national averages. The Australian Bureau of Statistics reports full-time adult ordinary time earnings at $2,083.70 per week (May 2026), which is about $108,352 annually.
Award Updates and Pay Guides
The Fair Work Commission publishes the Modern Awards Pay Database with current rates, allowances, and penalty rates. The Fair Work Ombudsman provides pay guides for each award, including the Health Services Award. Always refer to these official sources for your exact clinical coder salary entitlements.
