Clinical Nurse Specialist Salary: How to Convert Your Hourly Rate to Annual Pay
Under the Nurses Award 2020, a Registered Nurse at Pay point 5 earns $31.56 per hour, equating to approximately $62,400 per year for a 38-hour week, before tax and super.
Understanding Your Clinical Nurse Specialist Salary
If you are a clinical nurse specialist or considering a role in nursing, you may want to convert an hourly rate into an annual salary. The standard formula is:
Annual gross pay = hourly rate × hours per week × 52
This calculation assumes you work the same number of hours every week, with no unpaid overtime, penalty rates, or allowances. For full-time nurses under the Nurses Award 2020, ordinary hours are 38 per week (or an average of 38). We use 38 hours in our examples.
Award Rates for Nurses
The Fair Work Ombudsman publishes the Nurses Award 2020 [MA000034], which sets minimum pay rates for nurses. The award includes several classification levels. For a Registered Nurse at the highest pay point (Pay point 5), the minimum hourly rate from 1 August 2026 is $31.56. This translates to:
- Weekly: $31.56 × 38 = $1,199.28
- Fortnightly: $1,199.28 × 2 = $2,398.56
- Annual: $31.56 × 38 × 52 = $62,400 (rounded)
Note that clinical nurse specialists often fall under enterprise agreements with higher rates. The award rate is the legal minimum. For comparison, the Australian Bureau of Statistics reports that full-time adult average weekly ordinary time earnings were $2,083.70 in May 2026, which is about $108,350 per year.
Casual Loading and Superannuation
If you work as a casual nurse, you receive a 25% loading on top of the base hourly rate. For the Registered Nurse example:
- Base rate: $31.56
- Casual loading (25%): $7.89
- Casual hourly rate: $39.45
This loading compensates for the lack of paid leave. Superannuation is paid on top of your ordinary earnings. From 1 July 2026, the Superannuation Guarantee is 12% of your ordinary time earnings, up to the maximum contribution base of $270,830 per year. So on a $62,400 salary, your employer would contribute an extra $7,488 into your super fund.
Tax and Take-Home Pay
Using the 2026–27 resident tax rates and the Medicare levy (2%), here is an estimate for a $62,400 annual salary:
- Tax-free threshold: $18,200
- Tax on $18,201 to $45,000 (15%): $4,020
- Tax on $45,001 to $62,400 (30%): $5,220
- Total tax: $9,240
- Medicare levy (2% of $62,400): $1,248
- Total deductions: $10,488
- Estimated take-home pay: $51,912 per year, or $998 per week
This is an estimate. Your actual tax may vary depending on your circumstances, such as the Medicare levy surcharge or HELP repayments.

Distinguishing Minimum Wage and Award Rates
The National Minimum Wage from 1 July 2026 is $26.44 per hour, or $33.05 with casual loading. Award rates, like those in the Nurses Award, are higher because they reflect the skills and responsibilities of the job. Always check the correct award for your role.
