Crane Operator Salary: Award Rates, Casual Loading and Super Paid on Top

A full-time crane operator at Level 1 earns a minimum of $31.13 per hour (including industry allowance), or $1,182.89 per week, amounting to $61,510.28 per year before tax, with superannuation of 12% paid on top.

Understanding the Crane Operator Salary Under the Mobile Crane Hiring Award

If you are looking for a crane operator salary, the starting point is the Mobile Crane Hiring Award 2020 (MA000032) from the Fair Work Ombudsman. This award sets minimum wages, allowances, and conditions for employees in the mobile crane hiring industry. The rates are reviewed each year and apply from the first full pay period on or after 1 July.

Minimum Hourly Rates for Full-Time Employees

The award classifies crane operators into seven levels (MCE1 to MCE7) based on skill and experience. Each level has a minimum weekly classification rate, plus an all-purpose industry allowance of $63.79 per week. For example, a Level 1 mobile crane employee (MCE1) has a classification rate of $1,119.10 per week, which equates to $29.45 per hour. Adding the industry allowance brings the total ordinary hourly rate to $31.13. For Level 7 (MCE7), the classification rate is $1,344.50 per week ($35.38 per hour), plus the industry allowance, giving $37.06 per hour.

These rates are the legal minimum. Many employers pay above the award, but the award provides a floor for your crane operator salary.

Casual Loading and How It Affects Your Pay

Casual employees under the award are entitled to a 25% loading on the ordinary hourly rate. This loading is paid instead of annual leave, paid personal leave, paid parental leave, and other entitlements. The loading applies to the base rate including the industry allowance. For a Level 1 casual crane operator, the ordinary hourly rate of $31.13 becomes $38.91 when the 25% loading is added. Casual rates also attract penalty rates for overtime, Saturday, Sunday, and public holiday work, with the loading applied on top of those penalties.

When using the timesheet, you can enter your base hourly rate (without casual loading) and check the box to add 25% casual loading. This ensures the calculation reflects your correct entitlement.

Calculating Annual Salary from an Hourly Rate

To convert an hourly rate to an annual figure, use the formula:

Annual gross pay = hourly rate × hours per week × 52

This assumes you work the same number of hours every week, with no unpaid overtime or penalty rates. For full-time employees under the award, ordinary hours are 38 per week, Monday to Friday between 6 am and 6 pm. So for a Level 1 full-time crane operator:

$31.13 × 38 × 52 = $61,510.28 per year

For a casual Level 1 operator:

$38.91 × 38 × 52 = $76,888.56 per year

You can also think in fortnights: weekly pay × 2. For the full-time example, weekly pay is $1,182.89, so fortnightly pay is $2,365.78 before tax.

Superannuation Paid on Top

Employers must pay superannuation guarantee contributions on top of your ordinary earnings. From 1 July 2026, the super guarantee rate is 12% of ordinary time earnings, up to the maximum contribution base of $270,830 per year. For a full-time Level 1 crane operator earning $61,510.28, the employer adds $7,381.31 to your super fund each year. This is not deducted from your pay; it is an additional benefit.

Tax and Take-Home Pay

Your take-home pay depends on the 2026–27 resident tax rates and the Medicare levy. The tax-free threshold is $18,200. Income between $18,201 and $45,000 is taxed at 15%, then 30% up to $135,000, 37% up to $190,000, and 45% above that. The Medicare levy is generally 2% of taxable income. For a full-time Level 1 crane operator earning $61,510.28, the estimated tax (including Medicare) is around $10,800, leaving a take-home pay of about $50,700 per year. Use take-home pay for a more detailed estimate.

Distinguishing Award Rates from the National Minimum Wage

The National Minimum Wage from 1 July 2026 is $26.44 per hour, or $1,004.90 per week for 38 hours. Casual employees on the NMW receive $33.05 per hour including the 25% loading. Award rates for crane operators are higher because the award includes an industry allowance and reflects the skilled nature of the work. Always check the award rate that applies to your classification before accepting a job offer.

Using the Pay Guides and Reference Tables

The Fair Work Ombudsman publishes pay guides that summarise all rates, allowances, and penalties for the award. You can find these on the pay guides page. For a full list of classification rates and overtime multipliers, see the reference tables. These tools help you verify your crane operator salary and ensure you are paid correctly.

Important Notes on the Calculation

The annual pay shown here is an estimate. It assumes the same hourly rate every week, no unpaid overtime, no penalty rates, no allowances, and no salary sacrifice. Super is estimated at 12% of ordinary earnings only, paid on top, and stops at the $270,830 maximum contribution base. Tax uses the 2026–27 resident scale with the full tax-free threshold. Medicare uses the 2025–26 single reduction thresholds because the 2026–27 reduction thresholds were not confirmed. HELP, the Medicare levy surcharge, and salary packaging are not deducted. This is an estimate, not a determination of your pay or tax.

For a personalised calculation, enter your hourly rate into the timesheet. It will show your annual, monthly, fortnightly, and weekly pay, with options for casual loading and super.

Open the same rate on the home timesheet. Read the reference tables before treating a figure as your pay.

Questions people ask next

What is the casual loading for crane operators?

Casual employees under the Mobile Crane Hiring Award 2020 receive a 25% loading on the ordinary hourly rate. For a Level 1 crane operator, the casual rate is $38.91 per hour (including loading and industry allowance). This loading compensates for the lack of paid leave and other entitlements.

How is superannuation calculated for crane operators?

Superannuation is paid on top of ordinary earnings at the super guarantee rate of 12% for 2026–27. For a full-time Level 1 crane operator earning $61,510.28 per year, the employer contributes an additional $7,381.31 to super, subject to the maximum contribution base of $270,830.

How does the crane operator award rate compare to the National Minimum Wage?

The National Minimum Wage from 1 July 2026 is $26.44 per hour. The minimum award rate for a Level 1 crane operator (including industry allowance) is $31.13 per hour, which is higher due to the industry-specific award and the additional industry allowance.
