Data Analyst Salary: How to Convert Your Hourly Rate Becomes Annual Pay

A full-time data analyst earning $45 per hour working 38 hours a week would have an annual gross salary of $88,920 before tax and super.

Understanding Your Hourly Rate and Annual Pay

When you're looking at a job offer or negotiating a salary, it's helpful to convert your hourly rate to an annual figure. This is especially true for roles like a data analyst salary, where you might see both hourly and annual figures. The basic formula is simple: hourly rate × hours per week × 52 weeks. For a standard full-time position, we assume 38 hours per week, which is the ordinary hours used by the Fair Work Commission for the National Minimum Wage.

For example, if you earn $45 per hour as a data analyst, your annual gross pay would be $45 × 38 × 52 = $88,920. This is before tax, the Medicare levy, and super. It also assumes you work the same hours every week with no unpaid overtime, penalty rates, or allowances. If you work part-time or different hours, adjust the weekly hours accordingly.

The Fortnightly View

Many people are paid fortnightly. To get your fortnightly gross pay, multiply your weekly pay by 2. Using the same example, weekly pay is $45 × 38 = $1,710, so fortnightly is $3,420. This can help you budget and compare with salary offers that are quoted per year.

National Minimum Wage vs Award Rates

The National Minimum Wage is the legal minimum for employees not covered by an award or agreement. From 1 July 2026, it is $26.44 per hour, or $1,004.90 per week for 38 hours. However, most data analysts are covered by a modern award, such as the Professional Employees Award or the Clerks Award. These awards set higher minimum rates that are generally higher than the National Minimum Wage. The Fair Work Ombudsman provides pay guides that list the correct minimum rates for each award classification. For a data analyst salary, the award rate will depend on your classification level and experience.

Casual Loading

If you work as a casual employee, you are entitled to a 25% loading on top of the base hourly rate. This is to compensate for not receiving paid leave. The casual loading is calculated on the base rate, so do not enter a rate that already includes casual loading. Our calculator has a checkbox to add the 25% loading automatically. For example, a casual data analyst on the National Minimum Wage would get $26.44 + 25% = $33.05 per hour.

Tax and Medicare Levy

Once you have your annual gross salary, you need to estimate tax. The Australian Taxation Office (ATO) sets the resident tax rates for 2026–27. The tax-free threshold is $18,200. Then:

  • 15% on income from $18,201 to $45,000
  • 30% on income from $45,001 to $135,000
  • 37% on income from $135,001 to $190,000
  • 45% on income over $190,000

In addition, the Medicare levy is generally 2% of your taxable income. There are reductions for low-income earners, but the 2026–27 thresholds were not confirmed in this estimate, so we use the 2025–26 single reduction thresholds for estimation. This is an estimate, not a determination of your tax.

For a data analyst earning $88,920 per year, the tax would be:

  • First $18,200: $0
  • $18,201 to $45,000: ($45,000 - $18,200) × 15% = $4,020
  • $45,001 to $88,920: ($88,920 - $45,000) × 30% = $13,176
  • Total tax: $17,196
  • Medicare levy (2% of $88,920): $1,778.40
  • Total tax and Medicare: $18,974.40
  • Net annual pay: $69,945.60

Superannuation

Super is paid on top of your ordinary earnings. The super guarantee rate is 12% from 1 July 2026, up to the maximum contribution base of $270,830. For a data analyst salary of $88,920, the super contribution would be $88,920 × 12% = $10,670.40, paid by your employer on top of your salary. This is not deducted from your gross pay; it is additional. Our calculator estimates super based on ordinary earnings only.

Comparing Data Analyst Salaries

The Australian Bureau of Statistics (ABS) reports Average Weekly Earnings for full-time adult ordinary time at $2,083.70 per week (May 2026). That equates to an annual salary of about $108,352.40 (based on 52 weeks). A data analyst salary can vary widely depending on experience, industry, and location. Entry-level roles may be around $60,000 to $70,000, while senior analysts can earn over $120,000. The figures from the ABS are a useful benchmark, but your actual pay will depend on your award or agreement.

Important Disclaimer

Annual pay here is hourly rate × hours per week × 52. It assumes the same rate every week, no unpaid overtime, no penalty rates, no allowances, and no salary sacrifice. Super is estimated at 12% of ordinary earnings only, paid on top, and stops at the $270,830 maximum contribution base. Tax is the 2026–27 resident scale with the full tax-free threshold. Medicare uses the 2025–26 single reduction thresholds because the 2026–27 reduction thresholds were not confirmed here. HELP, the Medicare levy surcharge, and salary packaging are not deducted. This is an estimate, not a determination of your pay or tax.

Questions people ask next

How do I convert my hourly rate to an annual salary?

Multiply your hourly rate by the number of hours you work each week, then multiply by 52 weeks. For a standard full-time role, we assume 38 hours per week. For example, $45 per hour × 38 hours × 52 weeks = $88,920 per year. This is a gross figure before tax and super.

What is the difference between the National Minimum Wage and award rates for data analysts?

The National Minimum Wage is the legal floor for all employees not covered by an award or agreement. From 1 July 2026 it is $26.44 per hour, or $1,004.90 per week for 38 hours. Award rates for data analysts are set by the Fair Work Commission and are generally higher than the minimum. Most data analysts are usually covered by an award, so their minimum rate is set by the award, not the National Minimum Wage. The Fair Work Ombudsman pay guides provide pay guides with the correct award rates.

Does the annual pay include super and casual loading?

No. Super is paid on top of your ordinary earnings at 12% (from 1 July 2026) up to the maximum contribution base of $270,830. Casual loading is an additional 25% paid on top of the base hourly rate for casual employees. Our calculator has a checkbox to add casual loading. Do not enter a rate that already includes casual loading.
