Fashion Designer Salary: National Minimum Wage vs Award Rates in 2026
A fashion designer who is award-free is entitled to the National Minimum Wage of $26.44 per hour ($1,004.90 per 38-hour week) from 1 July 2026, with casual loading of 25% on top if applicable.
Understanding a Fashion Designer Salary in Australia
If you're researching a fashion designer salary in Australia, the first thing to know is that pay can vary widely depending on whether you are covered by an award or are award-free. Many fashion designers work in creative roles that fall outside modern awards, meaning they are entitled to the National Minimum Wage. Others, especially those in textile manufacturing, may be covered by the Textile and Clothing Award. This guide explains how to calculate your annual, fortnightly, and hourly pay, and what tax and superannuation you can expect.
National Minimum Wage vs Award Coverage
From 1 July 2026, the National Minimum Wage set by the Fair Work Commission is $26.44 per hour, or $1,004.90 for a 38-hour week. This is the base rate for adult employees who are not covered by an award or registered agreement. For casual employees, a 25% loading applies, bringing the casual rate to $33.05 per hour.
According to the Fair Work Ombudsman, fashion designers who are primarily involved in the creative side of design—such as researching trends, sketching original garments, and overseeing creative direction—are generally award-free. These employees are considered professional employees if they hold a degree (e.g., Bachelor of Fashion Design), and the Miscellaneous Award does not cover them. Therefore, their minimum pay is the National Minimum Wage.
However, some fashion designers and product developers working in the textile industry may be covered by the Textile and Clothing Award. That award has specific classifications such as Designer – Creative and Designer – Other, which can attract higher minimum rates. The Fair Work Commission's Modern Awards Pay Database provides the exact rates for these classifications, but they are not published here. If you work in a manufacturing environment, check your duties against the award to see if you are entitled to more than the national minimum.
How to Calculate Your Pay
To estimate your annual salary from an hourly rate, use the formula:
Annual gross pay ≈ hourly rate × hours per week × 52
We assume a standard full-time week of 38 hours (as defined by the Fair Work Act). For example, a fashion designer earning the National Minimum Wage of $26.44 per hour would have:
- Weekly pay: $26.44 × 38 = $1,004.90
- Fortnightly pay: $1,004.90 × 2 = $2,009.80
- Annual gross pay: $1,004.90 × 52 = $52,254.80
If you are a casual employee, remember that the 25% loading is added on top of the base rate. Do not type a rate that already includes casual loading into a calculator; instead, use the base rate and select the casual loading option. The casual rate would be $33.05 per hour, giving:
- Weekly pay: $33.05 × 38 = $1,255.90
- Annual gross pay: $1,255.90 × 52 = $65,306.80
For comparison, the Australian Bureau of Statistics reports that average weekly earnings for full-time adult ordinary time employees in May 2026 were $2,083.70 (approximately $108,352 per year). This is much higher than the National Minimum Wage, reflecting that many workers earn above the minimum. A fashion designer with experience and a strong portfolio may negotiate a salary well above the minimum.
Tax and Medicare
Your employer will deduct Pay As You Go (PAYG) tax based on the 2026–27 resident tax rates:
- Nil on the first $18,200
- 15% on income from $18,201 to $45,000
- 30% on income from $45,001 to $135,000
- 37% on income from $135,001 to $190,000
- 45% on income above $190,000
Additionally, the Medicare levy is generally 2% of your taxable income. For a full-time worker on the National Minimum Wage ($52,254.80), the tax would be approximately:
- Tax on first $18,200: $0
- Tax on next $26,800 (to $45,000): 15% = $4,020
- Tax on remaining $7,254.80 (to $52,254.80): 30% = $2,176.44
- Total tax: $6,196.44
- Medicare levy (2% of $52,254.80): $1,045.10
- Net annual income after tax and Medicare: approximately $45,013.26

Superannuation Paid on Top
Superannuation is an additional payment your employer must make into your super fund. From 1 July 2026, the super guarantee rate is 12% of your ordinary earnings, paid on top of your salary. The maximum contribution base is $270,830 per year.
For a fashion designer earning $52,254.80 per year, the super contribution would be:
- $52,254.80 × 12% = $6,270.58 per year
This is not deducted from your pay; it is an extra cost to your employer. If you are a casual employee, super is still calculated on your ordinary hours (including the casual loading). See our super and packaging page for more details.
Casual Loading and Award-Free Employees
If you are a casual fashion designer, you are entitled to a 25% casual loading on top of the base rate. This compensates for not receiving paid leave (sick leave, annual leave). The loading applies to the National Minimum Wage or any applicable award rate. For award-free casuals, the rate is $33.05 per hour. Learn more about casual loading.

Disclaimer: Annual pay here is hourly rate × hours per week × 52. It assumes the same rate every week, no unpaid overtime, no penalty rates, no allowances, and no salary sacrifice. Super is estimated at 12% of ordinary earnings only, paid on top, and stops at the $270,830 maximum contribution base. Tax is the 2026–27 resident scale with the full tax-free threshold. Medicare uses the 2025–26 single reduction thresholds because the 2026–27 reduction thresholds were not confirmed here. HELP, the Medicare levy surcharge, and salary packaging are not deducted. This is an estimate, not a determination of your pay or tax.
