How Does Salary Packaging Work? Converting Hourly Pay to Annual Salary in Australia
For a 38-hour week, your annual gross pay is your hourly rate multiplied by 38 hours and 52 weeks, with super and tax estimated separately.
How Does Salary Packaging Work? Converting Hourly Pay to Annual Salary in Australia
Understanding how does salary packaging work is an important part of evaluating your total compensation. Whether you are an employee on an hourly rate or considering a salary offer, converting your pay to annual, fortnightly, and after-tax figures helps you budget and compare jobs. This guide covers the basic conversion, the National Minimum Wage, award rates, casual loading, superannuation, and tax. We also explain how our the timesheet can help you estimate your pay.
The Basic Formula: Hourly × Hours per Week × 52
The standard method to convert an hourly rate to an annual salary is: hourly rate × hours per week × 52 weeks. For a full-time employee working 38 hours per week, the formula becomes: hourly rate × 38 × 52. For example, the National Minimum Wage of $26.44 per hour yields an annual gross of $26.44 × 38 × 52 = $52,265.44. This is your gross pay before any deductions or super.
If you work a different number of hours per week, you can adjust the formula accordingly. Our the timesheet allows you to enter your base hourly rate and choose a 38-hour week or custom hours. Remember that super is paid on top of your ordinary earnings, not deducted from your pay.
National Minimum Wage and Award Rates
The Fair Work Commission sets the National Minimum Wage (NMW). From 1 July 2026, the NMW is $26.44 per hour, which equates to $1,004.90 per week for 38 hours. Casual employees receive a 25% loading on top of the base rate, making the casual rate $33.05 per hour. Our minimum wage page provides more details.
Award rates may be higher than the NMW depending on your industry and role. The Fair Work Ombudsman publishes pay guides for each award. Our pay guides can help you find the correct classification. When using our timesheet, enter your base rate (the rate before casual loading). If you are a casual, check the casual loading checkbox to add 25% on top. Do not enter a rate that already includes casual loading.
Fortnightly Pay: Weekly × 2
Many employees are paid fortnightly. To find your fortnightly gross pay, multiply your weekly pay by two. For the NMW: $1,004.90 per week × 2 = $2,009.80 per fortnight. This is useful for budgeting and planning.
Superannuation: 12% on Top
Employers must pay superannuation contributions on top of your ordinary earnings. The super guarantee rate is 12% of ordinary earnings, up to the maximum contribution base of $270,830 per year. For a full-time NMW employee, annual super contribution would be 12% of $52,265.44 = $6,271.85, which is below the cap. For higher earners, the cap applies. Our super and packaging page explains how does salary packaging work with super contributions.
Tax and Take-Home Pay
Tax is estimated using the 2026–27 resident tax scale: nil on the first $18,200, 15% on the next $26,800 (up to $45,000), 30% on the next $90,000 (up to $135,000), 37% on the next $55,000 (up to $190,000), and 45% above $190,000. Medicare levy is generally 2% of taxable income.
For the NMW annual gross of $52,265.44, taxable income is the same (assuming no deductions). Tax calculation: $0 on first $18,200, 15% on $26,800 = $4,020, 30% on remaining $7,265.44 = $2,179.63, total tax $6,199.63. Medicare levy 2% = $1,045.31. Total tax and Medicare = $7,244.94. Net annual pay = $52,265.44 - $7,244.94 = $45,020.50. Fortnightly net ≈ $1,731.56.
Note: Our take-home pay page provides a more detailed estimate. The Medicare reduction thresholds for 2026–27 were not confirmed, so we use the 2025–26 single reduction thresholds. This is an estimate only.
Average Pay Comparisons
The Australian Bureau of Statistics (ABS) Average Weekly Earnings for May 2026 show full-time adult ordinary time earnings of $2,083.70 per week. All employees total earnings (including part-time) averaged $1,579.20 per week. These are national averages, not a median for a specific job. Our average pay page provides context. These figures are averages, not a median for this job.
How Does Salary Packaging Work in Practice?
Understanding how does salary packaging work can affect your overall compensation. Salary packaging (also known as salary sacrifice) allows you to pay for certain items with pre-tax income, reducing your taxable income and potentially lowering your tax. Common items include cars, laptops, or other benefits. Our super and packaging page explains the rules and limits. Our calculator does not include salary packaging, so you should consider it separately.
Limitations and Disclaimer
Our annual pay is hourly rate × hours per week × 52. It assumes the same rate every week, no unpaid overtime, no penalty rates, no allowances, and no salary sacrifice. Super is estimated at 12% of ordinary earnings only, paid on top, and stops at the $270,830 maximum contribution base. Tax uses 2026–27 resident scale with full tax-free threshold. Medicare uses 2025–26 single reduction thresholds because 2026–27 reduction thresholds were not confirmed here. HELP, the Medicare levy surcharge, and salary packaging are not deducted. This is an estimate, not a determination of your pay or tax.
