How to Calculate Your HVAC Salary from an Hourly Rate: A 38-Hour Week Guide
For a full-time HVAC technician on a 38-hour week, annual gross pay is hourly rate × 38 × 52, with super paid on top.
Understanding Your HVAC Salary from an Hourly Rate
If you work in the heating, ventilation, and air conditioning (HVAC) industry, you may be paid by the hour or offered an annual salary. Converting between the two is straightforward when you know the standard full-time hours. This guide explains how to calculate your HVAC salary using a 38-hour week, a fortnight, and a 52-week year. We also cover award rates, casual loading, tax, and superannuation.
The Basic Formula: Hourly × Hours per Week × 52
Annual gross pay = hourly rate × hours per week × 52. For a full-time employee, we assume 38 hours per week – the standard ordinary hours under most modern awards. If you work part-time or different hours, adjust the weekly hours accordingly.
Example: $35 per hour × 38 hours × 52 weeks = $69,160 per year.
To find your fortnightly pay, multiply your weekly pay by 2. Weekly pay = hourly rate × 38. Fortnightly pay = hourly rate × 76. This is useful for budgeting and comparing salary offers.
Award Rates for HVAC Technicians
HVAC technicians are typically covered by the Building and Construction General On-site Award or the Manufacturing and Associated Industries and Occupations Award. Minimum pay rates, allowances, and penalty rates are set by these awards. The Fair Work Ombudsman pay guides provide the current minimum rates for each classification. Always check the specific award that applies to your job.
For award-free employees, the National Minimum Wage from 1 July 2026 is $26.44 per hour ($1,004.90 per week for 38 hours). Casual employees receive a 25% loading, making the casual rate $33.05 per hour.
Casual Loading and Superannuation
If you are a casual HVAC worker, your employer must pay casual loading on top of the base rate. When using a pay calculator, enter your base hourly rate and select the casual loading option – do not enter a rate that already includes loading.
Superannuation is 12% of your ordinary earnings, paid on top of your salary. It is not deducted from your pay. The maximum contribution base is $270,830 per year. For example, on an annual salary of $70,000, super adds $8,400 per year.
Tax on Your HVAC Salary
For the 2026–27 financial year, resident tax rates are:
- $0 – $18,200: nil
- $18,201 – $45,000: 15% of excess over $18,200
- $45,001 – $135,000: $4,020 plus 30% of excess over $45,000
- $135,001 – $190,000: $31,020 plus 37% of excess over $135,000
- $190,001+: $51,420 plus 45% of excess over $190,000
Medicare levy is generally 2% of taxable income. Use the take-home pay calculator to estimate your net income after tax and Medicare.
Average HVAC Earnings in Australia
The Australian Bureau of Statistics reports average weekly earnings for full-time adult ordinary time at $2,083.70 per week (May 2026). For all employees (including part-time), total earnings average $1,579.20 per week. HVAC salaries vary by experience, location, and whether you work on commercial or residential projects. Many HVAC technicians earn above the award rate due to skills demand.
Using the Hourly to Annual Calculator
Our hourly conversion tool lets you enter your base hourly rate and see annual, fortnightly, and weekly figures. Check the casual loading box if applicable. The calculator assumes 38 hours per week, 52 weeks per year, and no unpaid overtime or penalty rates. Super is estimated at 12% on top, and tax uses the 2026–27 resident scale with the full tax-free threshold.
Important Disclaimer
Annual pay here is hourly rate × hours per week × 52. It assumes the same rate every week, no unpaid overtime, no penalty rates, no allowances, and no salary sacrifice. Super is estimated at 12% of ordinary earnings only, paid on top, and stops at the $270,830 maximum contribution base. Tax is the 2026–27 resident scale with the full tax-free threshold. Medicare uses the 2025–26 single reduction thresholds because the 2026–27 reduction thresholds were not confirmed here. HELP, the Medicare levy surcharge, and salary packaging are not deducted. This is an estimate, not a determination of your pay or tax.
