From Lewis Hamilton salary to minimum wage: understanding hourly to annual pay in Australia
For a full-time employee on the National Minimum Wage of $26.44 per hour, the annual gross pay is approximately $52,265 based on 38 hours per week for 52 weeks.
From hourly to annual: the basic formula
Whether you're curious about the Lewis Hamilton salary (reportedly in the tens of millions) or your own pay packet, converting an hourly rate to an annual figure is straightforward. The standard formula is:
Hourly rate × hours per week × 52 weeks = annual gross pay
We assume a 38-hour week, which is the full-time ordinary hours under the National Employment Standards. If you work part-time or casual, adjust the hours accordingly. For example, a casual employee working 20 hours per week on $30 per hour would earn $30 × 20 × 52 = $31,200 per year.
Why 38 hours?
The Fair Work Ombudsman's pay guides set minimum wages based on a 38-hour week for full-time employees. The National Minimum Wage from 1 July 2026 is $1,004.90 per week for 38 hours, or $26.44 per hour. This is the legal minimum for award-free employees.
Fortnightly pay and casual loading
Many employers pay fortnightly. To find your fortnightly gross pay, multiply your weekly pay by two. For the minimum wage: $1,004.90 × 2 = $2,009.80 per fortnight.
Casual employees receive a 25% loading on top of the minimum hourly rate to compensate for lack of paid leave. The casual minimum wage is $33.05 per hour. When using our the timesheet tool, tick the casual loading checkbox to add 25% to your base rate — do not enter a rate that already includes loading.
Award rates vs National Minimum Wage
Most employees are covered by a modern award that sets higher minimum rates. The Fair Work Ombudsman's pay guides list these rates for each classification. Award rates also include penalty rates for overtime, weekends, and public holidays, as well as allowances. If you are paid under an enterprise agreement, the agreement may set different rates, but it cannot undercut the award.
Annualised wages and salaries
Some awards allow annualised wages — a fixed annual amount that covers minimum pay, penalties, overtime, and allowances. According to the Fair Work Ombudsman, an annualised wage must be reviewed every 12 months to ensure the employee received at least what they would have under the award. If not, the employer must pay the difference. This is different from a simple salary under an employment contract, which may offset entitlements but still must meet minimum standards.
Tax and take-home pay
Your annual gross pay is not what you take home. The Australian Taxation Office (ATO) applies progressive tax rates for 2026–27:
- Nil on the first $18,200
- 15% on income from $18,201 to $45,000
- 30% on income from $45,001 to $135,000
- 37% on income from $135,001 to $190,000
- 45% on income above $190,000
Plus the Medicare levy of 2% (with reductions for low-income earners). Use our take-home pay tool for a detailed estimate.
Example: National Minimum Wage
For a full-time employee on $26.44 per hour:
- Annual gross: $26.44 × 38 × 52 = $52,265
- Tax (2026–27): approximately $6,917
- Medicare levy: $1,045
- Net annual: $44,303
- Net per week: $852
Superannuation paid on top
Employers must pay super guarantee of 12% on ordinary earnings, on top of your salary. This is not deducted from your pay. For the minimum wage example, the employer contributes $6,272 per year to your super fund, up to the maximum contribution base of $270,830. Super is separate from your take-home pay and is generally not accessible until retirement.
Comparing to average earnings
The Australian Bureau of Statistics (ABS) reports Average Weekly Earnings (May 2026) for full-time adult ordinary time at $2,083.70 per week, or about $108,352 per year. All employees total earnings (including part-time) average $1,579.20 per week, or $82,118 per year. These figures are higher than the minimum wage, reflecting the mix of occupations and experience.
The Lewis Hamilton salary in context
While the Lewis Hamilton salary is reported in the media as exceeding $40 million per year, that figure is far beyond typical Australian earnings. For perspective, it would take over 750 years for a minimum-wage worker to earn that amount. The conversion formula still applies: if his reported hourly rate were known, multiplying by hours worked per week and 52 weeks would yield a similar annual figure — but elite athletes often have complex contracts with bonuses, endorsements, and irregular hours.
Important assumptions
Our hourly conversion tool assumes the same rate every week, no unpaid overtime, no penalty rates, no allowances, and no salary sacrifice. Super is estimated at 12% of ordinary earnings only, paid on top, and stops at the $270,830 maximum contribution base. Tax uses the 2026–27 resident scale with the full tax-free threshold. Medicare uses the 2025–26 single reduction thresholds. HELP, the Medicare levy surcharge, and salary packaging are not deducted. This is an estimate, not a determination of your pay or tax.
For accurate pay rates, always check the Fair Work Ombudsman's pay guides or use their Pay and Conditions Tool. If you have an enterprise agreement, that may override award rates.
