Understanding the Minimum Wage Australia 2025: Converting Hourly Rates to Annual Salary for a 38-Hour Week
For a full-time worker on the National Minimum Wage of $26.44 per hour, the annual salary is approximately $52,270 based on a 38-hour week and 52-week year.
How to Convert Hourly Pay to Annual Salary
If you know your hourly rate and want to see what that means over a year, the calculation is straightforward: multiply your hourly rate by the number of hours you work each week, then by 52 weeks. This is the standard method used by the Fair Work Ombudsman and most employers in Australia.
For a full-time employee, we assume a 38-hour week, which is the ordinary hours under many awards and the National Employment Standards. So the formula becomes:
Hourly rate × 38 × 52 = annual gross salary
For example, if you earn $35 per hour, your annual salary is $35 × 38 × 52 = $69,160. This figure is before tax, Medicare levy, and any salary sacrifice arrangements. It also assumes you work the same hours every week with no unpaid overtime, penalty rates, or allowances.
Why 52 weeks and not 52.18?
Some calculators use 52.18 weeks to account for leap years, but the standard Australian practice for annualising salary is to use 52 weeks. This keeps things simple and matches how most employers quote annual salaries. If you are paid by the hour, your actual pay may vary if you take unpaid leave or work public holidays.
The National Minimum Wage and Award Rates
When people search for "minimum wage australia 2025", they are often looking for the legal minimum pay rate. The current National Minimum Wage, effective from 1 July 2026, is $26.44 per hour. This applies to employees who are not covered by an award or registered agreement. For a 38-hour week, that works out to $1,004.90 per week, or $52,254.80 per year.
However, many workers are covered by industry or occupation awards that set higher minimum rates. For example, a retail employee might have a higher base rate under the General Retail Industry Award. You can check your award rate using the pay guides on this site.
Casual Loading
Casual employees receive a 25% loading on top of the base hourly rate to compensate for not receiving paid leave. For the National Minimum Wage casual rate is $33.05 per hour including loading. When using the timesheet tool, you can tick the casual loading to see the casual rate automatically added to your base rate. Do not enter a rate that already includes casual loading.
Fortnightly Pay and Budgeting
Many Australians are paid fortnightly. To find your fortnightly gross pay, multiply your weekly pay by 2. For a full-time worker on the minimum wage, that is $1,004.90 × 2 = $2,009.80 per fortnight. Knowing your fortnightly amount helps with budgeting for rent, bills, and savings.
Superannuation Paid on Top
Superannuation (super) is not deducted from your salary; it is paid by your employer on top of your ordinary earnings. The super guarantee rate is 12% from 1 July 2025. For an employee earning $52,254.80 per year, the employer must contribute an additional $6,270.58 to a super fund, up to the maximum contribution base of $270,830. This is a key difference from salary packaging or sacrificing, where you choose to put extra into super from your pre-tax pay.
Tax and Take-Home Pay
Your take-home pay depends on the tax you owe. For the 2026–27 financial year, the resident tax rates are:
- Nil up to $18,200
- 15% from $18,201 to $45,000
- 30% from $45,001 to $135,000
- 37% from $135,001 to $190,000
- 45% above $190,000
Plus the Medicare levy of 2% (based on 2025–26 single reduction thresholds). For a minimum wage earner, the annual tax on $52,254.80 would be approximately $5,400, leaving a take-home pay of around $46,850 per year, or $901 per week. Use the take-home pay page for a more detailed estimate.
Using the Timesheet Tool
Our the timesheet tool lets you enter your base hourly rate and see the annual, fortnightly, and weekly amounts instantly. You can also toggle casual loading to see the difference. Remember, the tool assumes a 38-hour week and 52-week year. It does not include penalty rates, allowances, or salary sacrifice. Always check your specific award or agreement with your employer.
Important Disclaimer
Annual pay shown here is an estimate based on hourly rate × hours per week × 52. It assumes the same rate every week, no unpaid overtime, no penalty rates, no allowances, and no salary sacrifice. Super is estimated at 12% of ordinary earnings only, paid on top, and stops at the $270,830 maximum contribution base. Tax uses the 2026–27 resident scale with the full tax-free threshold. Medicare uses the 2025–26 single reduction thresholds because the 2026–27 reduction thresholds were not confirmed here. HELP, the Medicare levy surcharge, and salary packaging are not deducted. This is an estimate, not a determination of your pay or tax.
Open the same rate on the home timesheet. Read the reference tables before treating a figure as your pay.
