Minimum Wage Australia Casual: How to Convert Your Hourly Rate to Annual Salary
Based on the National Minimum Wage of $26.44 per hour for a 38-hour week, the annual gross pay is approximately $52,263 before tax and super.
Understanding the Minimum Wage Australia Casual Rate
The National Minimum Wage is the legal minimum pay rate for most employees in Australia. From 1 July 2026, the Fair Work Commission set it at $26.44 per hour for permanent employees. For casual workers, a 25% loading is added, making the minimum wage australia casual rate $33.05 per hour. This loading compensates for entitlements casuals do not receive, such as paid leave.
However, many workers are covered by an award or registered agreement that sets a higher rate than the National Minimum Wage. Always check your award or agreement first. The minimum wage page has more details on current rates.
How to Calculate Annual Salary from Hourly Pay
The standard formula to convert an hourly rate to an annual salary is:
hourly rate × hours per week × 52
We assume a full-time week of 38 hours, as defined by the Fair Work Ombudsman. For example:
- Permanent minimum wage: $26.44 × 38 × 52 = $52,263 per year (gross)
- Casual minimum wage: $33.05 × 38 × 52 = $65,329 per year (gross)
If you work fewer or more hours, adjust the weekly hours accordingly. The hourly conversion guide explains this in more detail.
Fortnightly Pay
Your fortnightly gross pay is simply your weekly pay multiplied by two. Using the minimum wage examples:
- Permanent: $1,004.90 per week → $2,009.80 per fortnight
- Casual: $1,256.10 per week → $2,512.20 per fortnight
Knowing your fortnightly amount is useful for budgeting and comparing salary offers.
National Minimum Wage vs Award Rates
The National Minimum Wage is the floor. Many industries have modern awards that set higher minimum rates for specific roles. For instance, hospitality, retail, and construction awards often exceed the national minimum. Casual loading of 25% applies on top of the base award rate, not on top of penalty rates or allowances.
If you are covered by an award, your minimum hourly rate (including casual loading if applicable) will be higher than $26.44. Use the pay guides or reference tables to find your correct classification.
Casual Loading Explained
Casual loading is an extra 25% paid on top of the base hourly rate. It is intended to compensate for the lack of paid sick leave, annual leave, and other benefits that permanent employees receive. When using our timesheet, enter your base hourly rate (without loading) and check the casual loading box. Do not enter a rate that already includes casual loading.
Tax and Super Estimates
Once you have your annual gross pay, you can estimate tax and super.
Superannuation Guarantee
Employers must pay super at 12% of your ordinary earnings on top of your gross salary. For the National Minimum Wage:
- Permanent: $52,263 × 12% = $6,271.56 per year
- Casual: $65,329 × 12% = $7,839.48 per year
Super is paid on top, not deducted from your pay. It stops once your earnings exceed the maximum contribution base of $270,830 (2026-27). See super and packaging for more.
Income Tax (2026-27 Resident Rates)
Using the tax-free threshold of $18,200 and the progressive rates:
- $0 – $18,200: nil
- $18,201 – $45,000: 15c for each $1 over $18,200
- $45,001 – $135,000: $4,020 plus 30c for each $1 over $45,000
- $135,001 – $190,000: $31,020 plus 37c for each $1 over $135,000
- Over $190,000: $51,370 plus 45c for each $1 over $190,000
Plus Medicare levy of 2% of taxable income (with possible reductions for low incomes). For a permanent minimum wage earner ($52,263), the estimated tax (including Medicare) is roughly $6,647. Your actual tax may differ based on deductions and other factors. Use the take-home pay calculator for a personalised estimate.
Average Weekly Earnings Reference
The Australian Bureau of Statistics (ABS) Average Weekly Earnings (AWE) for May 2026 show:
- Full-time adult ordinary time earnings: $2,083.70 per week
- All employees total earnings (including part-time): $1,579.20 per week
These are averages, not medians for any specific job or industry. They include all full-time adults across Australia. Do not use them as a median for your occupation. The average pay page has more context.
Using the Timesheet Calculator
Our timesheet lets you enter your base hourly rate. If you are a casual employee, check the casual loading box to add 25% on top. The calculator then shows:
- Annual gross pay (hourly × 38 × 52)
- Weekly and fortnightly gross
- Estimated tax (using 2026-27 rates and Medicare)
- Estimated super (12% of ordinary earnings)
Remember: the calculator assumes the same rate every week, no unpaid overtime, no penalty rates, no allowances, and no salary sacrifice. It is an estimate, not a determination of your pay or tax.

Disclaimer
Annual pay here is hourly rate × hours per week × 52. It assumes the same rate every week, no unpaid overtime, no penalty rates, no allowances, and no salary sacrifice. Super is estimated at 12% of ordinary earnings only, paid on top, and stops at the $270,830 maximum contribution base. Tax is the 2026–27 resident scale with the full tax-free threshold. Medicare uses the 2025–26 single reduction thresholds because the 2026–27 reduction thresholds were not confirmed here. HELP, the Medicare levy surcharge, and salary packaging are not deducted. This is an estimate, not a determination of your pay or tax.
Open the same rate on the home timesheet. Read the reference tables before treating a figure as your pay.
