Minimum Wage Casual Australia: Hourly to Annual Pay Calculator Guide

Based on the National Minimum Wage of $26.44 per hour, a full-time worker on 38 hours per week earns about $52,246 annually before tax, with super paid on top.

Understanding Hourly to Annual Pay in Australia

If you're paid by the hour or considering a salary offer, converting between hourly and annual figures helps you compare jobs and budget. This guide explains the formula, the role of the National Minimum Wage, award rates, casual loading, tax, and super. We focus on the standard 38‑hour week used by the Fair Work Commission.

The Basic Formula

Annual gross pay = hourly rate × hours per week × 52 weeks.

We assume a 38‑hour week for full‑time work. If you work fewer or more hours, adjust the weekly figure. For example, a part‑time worker on 20 hours a week would use 20 instead of 38.

A fortnight is simply two weeks: multiply your weekly pay by 2. Many employers pay fortnightly, so knowing your fortnightly gross helps with budgeting.

National Minimum Wage vs Award Rates

The National Minimum Wage (NMW) is the legal floor set by the Fair Work Commission. From 1 July 2026, the NMW is $26.44 per hour, or $1,004.90 per week for 38 hours. However, most employees are covered by an award – an industry‑ or occupation‑specific document that sets higher minimum pay rates. Award rates vary by job classification and may include penalty rates, allowances, and overtime. Always check your award before relying on the NMW.

Our minimum wage page has more details on current rates.

Casual Loading

Casual employees receive a 25% loading on top of the base rate to compensate for not getting paid leave (annual, sick, or personal). For the NMW, the casual rate is $33.05 per hour ($26.44 + 25%). When you use our timesheet, enter your base hourly rate (without loading) and tick the casual loading box. Do not enter a rate that already includes loading – the calculator will add it correctly.

Tax and Medicare

Tax is deducted from your gross pay using the 2026–27 resident tax rates:

  • Nil on the first $18,200
  • 15% on income from $18,201 to $45,000
  • 30% on income from $45,001 to $135,000
  • 37% on income from $135,001 to $190,000
  • 45% on income above $190,000

Most residents also pay a Medicare levy of 2% of taxable income. The tax estimates here use the 2025–26 single reduction thresholds because the 2026–27 thresholds were not confirmed in this estimate. Use our take‑home pay calculator for a more personalised estimate.

Superannuation (Paid on Top)

Employers must pay superannuation guarantee contributions of 12% of your ordinary earnings (as of 2026–27). This is on top of your salary or hourly rate – it is not deducted from your pay. The maximum contribution base is $270,830 per year. For example, if your annual ordinary earnings are $80,000, your employer adds $9,600 to your super fund.

See our super and packaging page for more.

Example: Minimum Wage Casual Australia

Let's say you're a casual worker on the National Minimum Wage. Your base rate is $26.44 per hour. With casual loading, your pay rate becomes $33.05 per hour. Working 38 hours per week:

  • Weekly gross: $33.05 × 38 = $1,255.90
  • Fortnightly gross: $1,255.90 × 2 = $2,511.80
  • Annual gross: $33.05 × 38 × 52 = $65,306.80

After tax (using the 2026–27 rates and 2% Medicare), your estimated annual take‑home pay is around $48,500. Your employer also pays super of 12% on your ordinary earnings (the base rate component, not the loading), which would be about $6,270 per year.

Important Disclaimer

Annual pay shown here is hourly rate × hours per week × 52. It assumes the same rate every week, no unpaid overtime, no penalty rates, no allowances, and no salary sacrifice. Super is estimated at 12% of ordinary earnings only, paid on top, and stops at the $270,830 maximum contribution base. Tax is the 2026–27 resident scale with the full tax‑free threshold. Medicare uses the 2025–26 single reduction thresholds because the 2026–27 reduction thresholds were not confirmed here. HELP, the Medicare levy surcharge, and salary packaging are not deducted. This is an estimate, not a determination of your pay or tax.

Using Our Tools

Our hourly conversion tool lets you quickly switch between hourly, weekly, fortnightly, and annual figures. For award‑specific rates, check the pay guides and reference tables. If you're comparing job offers, remember that a salary may include benefits like leave and super, while an hourly rate often does not.

Summary

  • Annual gross = hourly × hours per week × 52 (assume 38 hours for full‑time).
  • Fortnightly = weekly × 2.
  • National Minimum Wage is $26.44/hour; casual rate is $33.05/hour.
  • Award rates are usually higher – always check your award.
  • Super is 12% on top, not deducted from your pay.
  • Tax and Medicare reduce your take‑home pay.

Questions people ask next

How do I convert my hourly rate to annual pay?

Multiply your hourly rate by the number of hours you work each week, then multiply by 52. For example, if you earn $30 per hour and work 38 hours per week, your annual gross pay is $30 × 38 × 52 = $59,280. This assumes you work the same hours every week with no unpaid overtime or penalty rates.

What is casual loading and how does it affect my pay?

Casual loading is an extra 25% paid on top of the base hourly rate to compensate for not receiving paid leave. For the National Minimum Wage, the casual rate is $33.05 per hour (base $26.44 plus 25%). When using our calculator, enter your base hourly rate, then check the casual loading box to add 25% automatically.

How is superannuation calculated on my pay?

Superannuation is paid by your employer on top of your ordinary earnings at a rate of 12% (for 2026–27). It does not come out of your hourly rate. For example, if your annual ordinary earnings are $60,000, your employer contributes an extra $7,200 to your super fund, up to the maximum contribution base of $270,830.
