Minimum Wage for 16 Year Old: How to Convert Hourly to Annual Pay (2026-27)
For a 38-hour week, annual gross pay is hourly rate × 38 × 52. The National Minimum Wage is $26.44/hour, giving $52,254.80 annual before tax.
Introduction
Converting your hourly rate to an annual salary is straightforward: multiply your hourly rate by the number of hours you work each week, then by 52 weeks. This article assumes a standard full-time week of 38 hours unless stated otherwise. We'll cover the National Minimum Wage, award rates, casual loading, superannuation, and how tax and the Medicare levy affect your take-home pay.
If you're a 16-year-old starting your first job, you might be wondering about the minimum wage for 16 year old. Under many awards, junior rates apply, which are lower than the adult National Minimum Wage. The Fair Work Ombudsman sets these rates based on age and industry. For the most accurate figure, check your specific award or use our minimum wage page as a starting point.
The Basic Formula
Annual gross pay = hourly rate × hours per week × 52.
For a 38-hour week, that's hourly rate × 38 × 52. For example, the National Minimum Wage from 1 July 2026 is $26.44 per hour, giving:
$26.44 × 38 × 52 = $52,254.80 per year.
If you work fewer hours, adjust the formula accordingly. Our the timesheet lets you enter your base hourly rate and choose your weekly hours to see your annual estimate.
Fortnightly Pay
Many employers pay fortnightly. Your fortnightly gross pay is simply your weekly pay multiplied by 2. Using the National Minimum Wage example:
Weekly pay: $26.44 × 38 = $1,004.72 Fortnightly pay: $1,004.72 × 2 = $2,009.44
This can help you budget between paydays.
National Minimum Wage vs Award Rates
The National Minimum Wage applies to employees not covered by an award or agreement. From 1 July 2026, it is $26.44 per hour for adults. However, most employees are covered by an industry or occupation award, which may set higher minimum rates. Award rates also include junior rates for employees under 21, so the minimum wage for 16 year old under an award could be significantly lower than the adult rate. Always check your award or enterprise agreement.
Casual Loading
Casual employees are entitled to a 25% loading on top of their base hourly rate. This compensates for not receiving paid leave. The casual National Minimum Wage is $33.05 per hour ($26.44 + 25%). When using our the timesheet, you can check a box to add 25% casual loading. Do not enter a rate that already includes casual loading; enter your base hourly rate and let the calculator add the loading.
Superannuation (Paid on Top)
Employers must pay superannuation guarantee contributions of 12% of your ordinary earnings (from 1 July 2026). This is paid on top of your salary, not deducted from it. The maximum contribution base is $270,830 per year. For an employee earning $52,254.80, the super contribution would be:
$52,254.80 × 12% = $6,270.58 per year.
Super is not included in your take-home pay; it goes into your super fund. See our super and packaging page for more.
Tax and Medicare Levy
Your annual gross pay is used to estimate income tax and the Medicare levy. For the 2026-27 financial year, resident tax rates are:
- $0 – $18,200: Nil
- $18,201 – $45,000: 15%
- $45,001 – $135,000: 30%
- $135,001 – $190,000: 37%
- Over $190,000: 45%
The Medicare levy is generally 2% of your taxable income. These are applied after any deductions. For a full-time worker on the National Minimum Wage ($52,254.80), the estimated tax and Medicare would be:
Tax: $0 on first $18,200, then 15% on $26,800 ($4,020), then 30% on $7,254.80 ($2,176.44) = $6,196.44 Medicare: 2% of $52,254.80 = $1,045.10 Total deductions: $7,241.54 Take-home pay: $45,013.26 per year.
Note: This is an estimate. HELP repayments, Medicare levy surcharge, and salary packaging are not included. Use our take-home pay calculator for a more detailed estimate.
Important Disclaimer
Annual pay shown here is hourly rate × hours per week × 52. It assumes the same rate every week, no unpaid overtime, no penalty rates, no allowances, and no salary sacrifice. Super is estimated at 12% of ordinary earnings only, paid on top, and stops at the $270,830 maximum contribution base. Tax is the 2026-27 resident scale with the full tax-free threshold. Medicare uses the 2025-26 single reduction thresholds because the 2026-27 reduction thresholds were not confirmed here. This is an estimate, not a determination of your pay or tax.
