Minimum Wage in Australia 2026: Convert Your Hourly Rate to Annual, Fortnightly and Super
Based on a 38-hour week, the National Minimum Wage from 1 July 2026 is $26.44 per hour, giving an annual gross of $52,269.44 before tax and super.
Understanding Your Hourly to Annual Conversion
If you are paid by the hour or have been offered a salary, converting between the two helps you compare jobs and budget. The standard method is straightforward: multiply your hourly rate by the hours you work each week, then by 52 weeks. For a full-time employee working 38 hours per week, the formula is:
Annual gross ≈ hourly rate × 38 × 52
This calculation assumes you work the same hours every week, with no unpaid overtime, penalty rates, allowances, or salary sacrifice. It is a starting point for estimating your gross pay.
The National Minimum Wage in Australia 2026
From 1 July 2026, the National Minimum Wage (NMW) is $26.44 per hour. For a 38‑hour week, that equates to $1,004.90 per week or $52,269.44 per year. Casual employees receive a 25% loading on top of the base rate, making the casual minimum $33.05 per hour. The NMW is set by the Fair Work Commission and applies to employees who are not covered by an award or registered agreement.
It is important to distinguish the NMW from award rates. Many industries have specific awards that set higher minimum wages for particular roles. For example, a retail employee under the General Retail Industry Award may have a higher base rate than the NMW. The figures above are the legal floor; your actual rate may be higher if an award or enterprise agreement applies.
Fortnightly Pay and Tax Withholding
If you are paid fortnightly, your gross pay is simply your weekly pay multiplied by two. For the NMW, that is $2,009.80 per fortnight. Many employers pay on a fortnightly cycle, so knowing your fortnightly amount helps with budgeting.
Tax is withheld by your employer using the tax tables provided by the Australian Taxation Office. For the 2026–27 income year, the resident tax rates are:
- Nil on the first $18,200
- 15% on income from $18,201 to $45,000
- 30% on income from $45,001 to $135,000
- 37% on income from $135,001 to $190,000
- 45% on income above $190,000
A Medicare levy of 2% generally applies, with reductions for low-income earners. The 2025–26 single reduction thresholds are used here because the 2026–27 thresholds were not confirmed in this estimate. The tax estimate on the timesheet uses these rates and assumes you claim the full tax‑free threshold.
Superannuation Is Paid on Top
Superannuation guarantee contributions are paid by your employer on top of your ordinary earnings. From 1 July 2026, the rate is 12% of your ordinary time earnings, up to the maximum contribution base of $270,830 per year. For an employee on the NMW, the super contribution is $6,272.33 per year (12% of $52,269.44). This amount goes into your super fund and is not deducted from your hourly rate or salary. Our super and packaging page explains how salary packaging can affect your take-home pay.
Casual Loading and Award Rates
Casual employees are entitled to a 25% loading on the base hourly rate to compensate for the lack of paid leave. On the timesheet, you can check a box to add 25% casual loading to your base hourly rate. Do not enter a rate that already includes the loading; the tool adds it for you. The casual NMW is $33.05 per hour, but many awards set higher casual rates.
Award rates are minimum wages for specific industries and occupations. They are published by the Fair Work Ombudsman and can be higher than the NMW. For example, the Hospitality Industry General Award has different rates for different levels. If you are covered by an award, your minimum pay is that award rate, not the NMW. Our pay guides and reference tables provide more detail on common awards.
Average Earnings for Comparison
The Australian Bureau of Statistics publishes Average Weekly Earnings (AWE) data. For May 2026, full-time adult ordinary time earnings averaged $2,083.70 per week. All employees (including part-time) averaged $1,579.20 per week. These are averages, not medians, and they include all industries and states. They can give you a sense of where your rate sits relative to the broader workforce. See our average pay page for more context.
What This Estimate Does Not Cover
This conversion is an estimate. It does not account for:
- Unpaid overtime or penalty rates
- Allowances (e.g., travel, tools)
- Salary sacrifice arrangements
- HELP or HECS repayments
- Medicare levy surcharge (for singles earning over $93,000 or families over $186,000)
- State taxes or payroll tax
For a personalised calculation, use the timesheet and adjust for your actual hours and any loading. Always check your pay slip and consult the Fair Work Ombudsman if you are unsure about your minimum entitlements.
