Minimum Wage Increases 2026: How to Convert Your Hourly Rate to Annual Pay

Based on a 38-hour week and 52-week year, the 2026 National Minimum Wage of $26.44/hour equals $52,254.80 annually before tax and super.

Understanding the Annual Pay Formula

When you have an hourly rate or a salary offer, converting it to annual pay helps you compare jobs and plan your budget. The standard formula is simple: hourly rate × hours per week × 52 weeks. This article assumes a 38-hour week, which is the full-time ordinary hours used by the Fair Work Ombudsman. We also explain fortnightly pay, tax, and superannuation, all updated for the minimum wage increases 2026.

The 38-Hour Week and Fortnightly Pay

Most full-time employees in Australia work 38 hours per week. To find your annual gross pay, multiply your hourly rate by 38 and then by 52. For example, the National Minimum Wage from 1 July 2026 is $26.44/hour. That gives:

$26.44 × 38 × 52 = $52,254.80 per year.

If you are paid fortnightly, your gross pay is weekly pay times two. Weekly pay at $26.44/hour for 38 hours is $1,004.90 (as set by the Fair Work Commission). So your fortnightly gross is $2,009.80. This is useful for budgeting and comparing with salary offers that quote a fortnightly figure.

National Minimum Wage vs Award Rates

The minimum wage increases 2026 set the National Minimum Wage at $26.44/hour for adults. However, many employees are covered by awards or enterprise agreements that may pay higher rates. The Fair Work Ombudsman publishes pay guides for each award. If you are covered by an award, your minimum hourly rate could be above $26.44. The National Minimum Wage is the legal floor; award rates are industry-specific minimums. Always check your award or agreement.

Our reference tables include the latest award rates, but for a personalised estimate, use our the timesheet. Type your base hourly rate (the rate before any casual loading) and the tool will calculate annual, fortnightly, and weekly figures.

Casual Loading and Superannuation

Casual employees receive a 25% loading on top of the base hourly rate. For the National Minimum Wage, that loading brings the casual rate to $33.05/hour. On our the timesheet, you can check a box to add the 25% casual loading. Never type a rate that already includes casual loading – the tool adds it for you.

Superannuation is paid on top of your ordinary earnings. From 1 July 2026, the super guarantee is 12% of your ordinary time earnings. For a full-time employee on the National Minimum Wage, that means an extra $6,270.58 per year (12% of $52,254.80), but only up to the maximum contribution base of $270,830. Super is not deducted from your pay; your employer pays it separately. See super and packaging for more details.

Tax Considerations for 2026-27

Your annual gross pay is not what you take home. The Australian Taxation Office applies progressive tax rates for residents in 2026-27:

  • Nil on the first $18,200
  • 15% on income from $18,201 to $45,000
  • 30% on income from $45,001 to $135,000
  • 37% on income from $135,001 to $190,000
  • 45% on income above $190,000

Plus the Medicare levy of 2% (based on 2025-26 single reduction thresholds, as 2026-27 thresholds were not confirmed). For the National Minimum Wage earner ($52,254.80), the estimated tax is about $7,276 plus Medicare of $1,045, leaving around $43,934 after tax. This is an estimate only – it does not include HELP repayments, the Medicare levy surcharge, or salary packaging. Use our take-home pay guide for a more detailed breakdown.

Using Our Tools

Our the timesheet is the home page. Type your base hourly rate, select your weekly hours (default 38), and optionally check the casual loading box. The tool instantly shows your annual, fortnightly, and weekly gross pay, plus estimated tax and super. It follows the formula: hourly × hours per week × 52. Remember, this assumes the same rate every week, no unpaid overtime, no penalty rates, no allowances, and no salary sacrifice.

For a broader view, see average pay. The Australian Bureau of Statistics reports Average Weekly Earnings for May 2026: full-time adult ordinary time earnings are $2,083.70 per week, and all employees (including part-time) average $1,579.20 per week. These are averages, not medians for any specific job. Your actual pay may differ.

Summary

The minimum wage increases 2026 set clear benchmarks: $26.44/hour for the National Minimum Wage, $33.05/hour for casuals. Use the formula hourly × 38 × 52 to get annual gross. Fortnightly pay is weekly × 2. Super is 12% on top, and tax follows the 2026-27 resident scale. Our tools help you convert and compare. Always check your award or agreement for your exact rate, and consult the Fair Work Ombudsman for authoritative guidance.

Questions people ask next

How do I convert my hourly rate to annual pay?

Multiply your hourly rate by your weekly hours (usually 38 for full-time) and then by 52 weeks. For example, $26.44/hour × 38 hours × 52 weeks = $52,254.80 per year. This assumes no unpaid overtime or penalty rates. Use our [the timesheet](/) to do the calculation instantly.

What is the casual loading rate for 2026?

Casual employees receive a 25% loading on top of the base rate. For the National Minimum Wage, that's $33.05/hour. Our [the timesheet](/) has a checkbox to add this loading automatically. Never type a rate that already includes casual loading; the tool adds it for you.

How is superannuation calculated on my annual pay?

Super guarantee is 12% of your ordinary earnings, paid on top of your salary. For the 2026-27 year, the maximum contribution base is $270,830. So if your annual pay is $52,254.80, super adds $6,270.58, but only up to the cap. See [super and packaging](/topics/super-and-packaging) for more.
