Minimum Wage NSW 2026: Hourly to Annual Pay for a 38-Hour Week
Based on the National Minimum Wage of $26.44 per hour and a 38-hour week, the annual gross pay is approximately $52,269.44 before tax and super.
How the Minimum Wage NSW Applies to Your Pay
If you're paid by the hour or considering a salary offer, understanding the conversion from hourly to annual pay is essential. This guide focuses on the minimum wage NSW and uses the standard 38-hour week as the benchmark. We'll walk through the formula, fortnightly pay, tax, and superannuation so you can compare offers and estimate your take-home pay.
The Basic Formula: Hourly × Hours × 52
The standard calculation for annual gross pay is:
Annual gross = hourly rate × hours per week × 52 weeks
We assume a 38-hour week because that is the full-time ordinary hours under the Fair Work Act. If you work fewer or more hours, adjust accordingly. For example, a part-time worker on 20 hours per week would use 20 instead of 38.
For the minimum wage NSW (National Minimum Wage from 1 July 2026: $26.44 per hour), the annual gross is:
$26.44 × 38 × 52 = $52,269.44
This figure is before tax, Medicare, and superannuation. It also assumes the same rate every week with no unpaid overtime, penalty rates, or allowances.
Fortnightly Pay
Many employers pay fortnightly. To get your gross fortnightly amount, multiply the weekly figure by 2. For the minimum wage NSW:
Weekly: $26.44 × 38 = $1,004.72 (rounded from $1,004.90 per the Fair Work Ombudsman figure) Fortnightly: $1,004.72 × 2 = $2,009.44
If you're comparing a salary offer, divide the annual salary by 26 to get the gross fortnightly amount.
National Minimum Wage vs. Award Rates
The National Minimum Wage is the legal floor. However, many employees are covered by an award or registered agreement that sets higher rates for their industry or industry. For example, the minimum wage is $26.44, but awards often have higher minimum rates. Always check your award via the Fair Work Ombudsman. The pay guides on this site can help you find the correct classification.
Casual Loading
If you are a casual employee, you are entitled to a 25% casual loading on top of the base hourly rate. For the minimum wage NSW, the casual rate is $26.44 + 25% = $33.05 per hour. This loading is paid instead of annual leave, sick leave, and public holiday pay. When using our the timesheet, you enter your base hourly rate and check the casual loading box to add 25% on top. Never enter a rate that already includes casual loading.
Superannuation Paid on Top
Superannuation guarantee is 12% of your ordinary time earnings, paid by your employer on top of your gross pay. It does not come out of your hourly rate. For the minimum wage NSW, the annual super contribution would be:
$52,269.44 × 12% = $6,272.33
Super is capped at the maximum contribution base of $270,830 (2026–27). Most minimum wage earners will not reach that cap. Super is not included in your take-home pay; it goes into your super fund.
Tax and Medicare
Using the 2026–27 resident tax rates:
- Nil tax on the first $18,200
- 15% on income between $18,201 and $45,000
- 30% on income between $45,001 and $135,000
- 37% on income between $135,001 and $190,000
- 45% on income above $190,000
Medicare levy is generally 2% of taxable income, with reductions for low-income earners. For a single person earning the minimum wage NSW annual gross of $52,269.44, the estimated tax (including Medicare) would be approximately $7,200, leaving take-home pay around $45,000 per year. Use our take-home pay estimator for a more precise calculation.
How the Minimum Wage NSW Compares to Averages
The Australian Bureau of Statistics (ABS) Average Weekly Earnings (May 2026) for full-time adult ordinary time in New South Wales is $2,108.80 per week. This is an average across all full-time employees in NSW, not the median for any specific job. The National Minimum Wage is significantly lower than that average. If you are looking at a specific role, check the relevant award or enterprise agreement rather than relying on averages. Our average pay page has more context.
Important Disclaimer
Annual pay here is hourly rate × hours per week × 52. It assumes the same rate every week, no unpaid overtime, no penalty rates, no allowances, and no salary sacrifice. Super is estimated at 12% of ordinary earnings only, paid on top, and stops at the $270,830 maximum contribution base. Tax is the 2026–27 resident scale with the full tax-free threshold. Medicare uses the 2025–26 single reduction thresholds because the 2026–27 reduction thresholds were not confirmed here. HELP, the Medicare levy surcharge, and salary packaging are not deducted. This is an estimate, not a determination of your pay or tax.
