Minimum Wage Tasmania: How to Convert Your Hourly Rate to Annual Pay with Casual Loading and Super

For a full-time worker on the National Minimum Wage of $26.44 per hour, the annual gross pay is approximately $52,261 based on a 38-hour week.

From Hourly to Annual: The Simple Formula

Converting an hourly wage to an annual salary is straightforward: multiply your hourly rate by the number of hours you work each week, then by 52 weeks. For full-time employees, the standard assumption is 38 hours per week, as defined by the Fair Work Ombudsman. This gives you the gross annual pay before tax and other deductions.

For example, if you earn the minimum wage Tasmania rate of $26.44 per hour and work 38 hours each week, your annual gross pay is:

$26.44 × 38 × 52 = $52,261.44 (rounded to $52,261)

This formula works for any hourly rate. Use the timesheet to calculate your own figures by entering your base hourly rate and selecting the casual loading checkbox if applicable.

Why 38 Hours?

The 38-hour week is the standard full-time week under the Fair Work Act. If you work fewer hours (part-time) or more (overtime), adjust the hours per week accordingly. The formula assumes the same rate every week with no unpaid overtime, penalty rates, or allowances.

Minimum Wage Tasmania and Award Rates

The minimum wage Tasmania is the same as the National Minimum Wage set by the Fair Work Commission. From 1 July 2026, the rate is $26.44 per hour for permanent employees. Casual employees receive an additional 25% loading, making it $33.05 per hour.

However, many industries have award rates that are higher than the minimum. Awards are legally binding documents that set minimum pay and conditions for specific jobs. For example, the Hospitality Industry General Award or the Retail Award may have higher base rates. The figures above are the absolute minimum; your actual rate may be higher depending on your award or enterprise agreement.

For a broader view, the Australian Bureau of Statistics reports average weekly earnings. In Tasmania, full-time adult ordinary time earnings averaged $1,846.30 per week in May 2026. This is an average across all jobs, not the median for any specific role. Your pay may differ significantly.

Refer to pay guides for more information on award rates and classifications.

Casual Loading and Super Paid on Top

Casual loading is a key feature of Australian pay. It compensates casual employees for not receiving paid leave (annual leave, sick leave) and is set at 25% on top of the base hourly rate. When using the timesheet on this site, you can check the “Casual loading” box to automatically add 25% to your base rate. Never enter a rate that already includes casual loading; the tool handles it for you.

Superannuation (super) is paid on top of your gross earnings. The super guarantee rate is 12% of ordinary earnings, which includes casual loading. For example, if your casual rate is $33.05 per hour, your employer pays an additional $3.97 per hour into your super fund (12% of $33.05). This is not deducted from your pay; it’s an extra cost to the employer.

Super is capped at the maximum contribution base of $270,830 per year. If your earnings exceed that, the employer does not have to pay super on the excess. For most workers, this cap is not reached.

Fortnightly Pay

Many employers pay fortnightly. To find your fortnightly gross pay, multiply your weekly pay by 2. For a full-time worker on the minimum wage Tasmania rate of $26.44 per hour:

  • Weekly: $26.44 × 38 = $1,004.72
  • Fortnightly: $1,004.72 × 2 = $2,009.44

This is before tax and super. Super is paid separately by your employer.

Tax and Take-Home Pay

Your take-home pay is what remains after tax and the Medicare levy. The Australian Taxation Office sets the resident tax rates for 2026–27 as follows:

  • Nil tax on the first $18,200
  • 15% on income from $18,201 to $45,000
  • 30% on income from $45,001 to $135,000
  • 37% on income from $135,001 to $190,000
  • 45% on income above $190,000

Medicare levy is generally 2% of taxable income, with reductions for low-income earners. The thresholds used here are the 2025–26 single reduction thresholds, as the 2026–27 figures were not confirmed. This is an estimate only.

For a full-time worker on the minimum wage Tasmania ($52,261 annual), the estimated tax and Medicare would be:

  • Tax: $5,092 (using the 2026–27 brackets)
  • Medicare: $1,045 (2% of $52,261)
  • Take-home pay: approximately $46,124 per year, or $887 per week.

Note that this does not include HELP loans, Medicare levy surcharge, or salary packaging. Use take-home pay for more detailed estimates.

Important Disclaimer

The annual pay shown here is hourly rate × hours per week × 52. It assumes the same rate every week, no unpaid overtime, no penalty rates, no allowances, and no salary sacrifice. Super is estimated at 12% of ordinary earnings only, paid on top, and stops at the $270,830 maximum contribution base. Tax uses the 2026–27 resident scale with the full tax-free threshold. Medicare uses the 2025–26 single reduction thresholds because the 2026–27 reduction thresholds were not confirmed here. HELP, the Medicare levy surcharge, and salary packaging are not deducted. This is an estimate, not a determination of your pay or tax.

Questions people ask next

What is the minimum wage in Tasmania?

The National Minimum Wage applies across Australia, including Tasmania. From 1 July 2026, it is $26.44 per hour for permanent employees, or $33.05 per hour for casual employees including the 25% casual loading. These rates are set by the Fair Work Commission and apply to all states and territories.

How is casual loading calculated?

Casual loading is an additional 25% on top of the base hourly rate to compensate for lack of paid leave. For example, if your base rate is $26.44, the casual rate becomes $33.05. Superannuation is then paid on the gross amount including the loading. Never enter a rate that already includes casual loading into the timesheet; use the checkbox to add it.

Does superannuation apply to casual workers?

Yes, the super guarantee of 12% is paid on ordinary earnings, which includes casual loading, up to the maximum contribution base of $270,830 per year. Super is paid on top of your hourly rate, not deducted from it. Both permanent and casual employees are entitled to super if they earn $450 or more in a calendar month.
