Hourly to Annual Pay: Use Our Monthly Salary Calculator for 38-Hour Weeks

For a 38-hour week, annual gross pay is hourly rate × 38 × 52, with super paid on top at 12%.

Understanding Your Hourly to Annual Conversion

If you earn an hourly wage or have been offered a salary, you need a reliable way to compare them. Our monthly salary calculator does exactly that: it converts your hourly rate into annual, fortnightly, and monthly figures based on a standard 38-hour week. This article explains the formula, the assumptions, and how tax and super fit in.

The Basic Formula

The core calculation is simple: annual gross pay = hourly rate × hours per week × 52 weeks. For a full-time employee working 38 hours every week, that becomes hourly rate × 38 × 52. This gives you the gross annual salary before any deductions. Our monthly salary calculator uses this same approach, but also breaks it down into fortnightly and monthly amounts.

Why 38 Hours?

The 38-hour week is the standard full-time benchmark under the Fair Work Act. Many awards and agreements are built around it. When you use our calculator, we assume 38 hours unless you change the hours field. If you work a different pattern – say 40 hours – you can adjust the hours per week to match your situation. The calculator always multiplies by 52 weeks, which assumes you work every week of the year with no unpaid leave.

Fortnightly and Monthly Breakdown

Once you have the annual figure, dividing by 26 gives you a fortnightly gross pay. Many employers pay fortnightly, so this is a handy number. Monthly pay is annual divided by 12, but note that actual monthly pay can vary if your employer uses a different divisor (e.g., 52.18 weeks). Our monthly salary calculator uses the simple annual ÷ 12 method for consistency.

Tax and the 2026–27 Rates

Your gross pay is not what you take home. The Australian Taxation Office (ATO) applies progressive tax rates. For 2026–27, the resident tax brackets are:

  • Nil on the first $18,200
  • 15% on income from $18,201 to $45,000
  • 30% on income from $45,001 to $135,000
  • 37% on income from $135,001 to $190,000
  • 45% on income above $190,000

In addition, most residents pay a Medicare levy of 2% of taxable income. Our monthly salary calculator estimates tax and Medicare using these rates and the full tax-free threshold. It does not deduct HELP debts, the Medicare levy surcharge, or salary sacrifice amounts.

Super Guarantee – Paid on Top

Superannuation is an extra cost for employers, not a deduction from your pay. The super guarantee rate is 12% of your ordinary time earnings, paid on top of your salary. For example, if your annual gross is $80,000, your employer contributes an additional $9,600 into your super fund. However, super is capped at the maximum contribution base of $270,830 (2026–27). Our monthly salary calculator shows the estimated super amount based on your ordinary earnings, but remember it is not deducted from your take-home pay.

Minimum Wage and Award Rates

The National Minimum Wage from 1 July 2026 is $26.44 per hour for a 38-hour week, or $1004.90 per week. Casual employees get a 25% loading, making it $33.05 per hour. This is the legal floor for award-free employees. However, many workers are covered by awards or enterprise agreements that set higher minimum rates. Our minimum wage page has more details. If you are on an award, check your specific classification – the calculator can handle any hourly rate you enter.

Casual Loading – How It Works

Casual employees are entitled to a 25% loading on top of the base hourly rate to compensate for not receiving paid leave. In our monthly salary calculator, there is a checkbox to add casual loading. Important: enter your base hourly rate (without loading) and tick the box. The calculator will add 25% automatically. Do not enter a rate that already includes casual loading. For more, see our casual loading guide.

Average Earnings for Context

The Australian Bureau of Statistics (ABS) publishes Average Weekly Earnings (AWE). In May 2026, full-time adult ordinary time earnings were $2083.70 per week. All employees total earnings (including part-time) averaged $1579.20 per week. These are averages, not medians for a specific job. Our average pay page explains how to interpret them. If you are comparing your salary to an industry average, remember that averages can be skewed by high earners.

Using the Calculator Responsibly

Our monthly salary calculator is a tool for estimation. It assumes you work the same number of hours every week, with no unpaid overtime, penalty rates, allowances, or salary sacrifice. Super is estimated at 12% of ordinary earnings only, paid on top, and stops at the $270,830 maximum contribution base. Tax uses the 2026–27 resident scale with the full tax-free threshold. Medicare uses the 2025–26 single reduction thresholds because the 2026–27 thresholds were not confirmed in this estimate. This is an estimate, not a determination of your pay or tax. For personalised advice, consult a tax professional or the ATO.

Putting It All Together

Whether you are negotiating a salary, budgeting for a new job, or just curious, our monthly salary calculator gives you a clear picture. Start with your hourly rate, choose whether you are casual, and see your annual, fortnightly, and monthly gross pay, plus estimated tax and super. Remember that the calculator uses a 38-hour week by default, but you can adjust it. For award-covered employees, check your award rate first. The Fair Work Ombudsman provides pay guides for each industry.

Use the calculator as a starting point. Your actual pay may differ due to overtime, penalties, or enterprise agreements. Always verify with your employer or a professional advisor.

Questions people ask next

How do I convert my hourly rate to annual pay?

Multiply your hourly rate by the number of hours you work per week, then by 52 weeks. For a standard full-time week of 38 hours, the formula is: hourly rate × 38 × 52. This gives your gross annual salary before tax and super. Our monthly salary calculator uses this same method.

What is the National Minimum Wage in Australia?

From 1 July 2026, the National Minimum Wage is $26.44 per hour, or $1004.90 per week for a 38-hour week. Casual employees receive an additional 25% loading, making it $33.05 per hour. These rates are set by the Fair Work Commission and apply to award-free employees.

How is casual loading applied in the calculator?

Our monthly salary calculator includes a checkbox to add 25% casual loading on top of your base hourly rate. Do not enter a rate that already includes casual loading. The calculator adds the loading automatically, so your base rate should be the award or minimum rate without loading.
