NRL Player Salary: How to Convert Hourly Rates to Annual Pay in Australia

The National Minimum Wage from 1 July 2026 is $26.44 per hour, or $1,004.90 per week for 38 hours, and the minimum NRL player salary for a Top 30 player in 2026 is estimated at $140,000 per year.

How the Hourly-to-Annual Formula Works

Understanding your annual pay from an hourly rate is straightforward. The standard formula is:

Hourly rate × hours per week × 52 weeks = annual gross pay

We assume a 38-hour week, which is the full-time ordinary hours used by the Fair Work Commission for the National Minimum Wage. For example, the National Minimum Wage from 1 July 2026 is $26.44 per hour. Using the formula:

$26.44 × 38 × 52 = $52,254.88 per year

If you are paid fortnightly, simply multiply your weekly pay by two. At the minimum wage, a fortnight is $2,009.80 before tax.

This method works for any hourly rate, but remember it assumes the same rate every week with no unpaid overtime, penalty rates, or allowances. For award-covered employees, always check the specific award rates via the pay guides from the Fair Work Ombudsman.

What About Award Rates and Casual Loading?

Most Australian employees are covered by an award or enterprise agreement. Award minimum wages increased by 4.75% from 1 July 2026. If you are award/agreement-free, the National Minimum Wage applies.

Casual employees receive a 25% loading on top of the base rate. For the National Minimum Wage, the casual rate is $33.05 per hour. When using our timesheet, select the casual loading checkbox to add 25% to your base hourly rate – never enter a rate that already includes loading.

For junior employees (under 21), apprentices, or employees with a disability, special national minimum wages apply as percentages of the full adult rate. See the minimum wage page for details.

Tax and Super on Your Annual Pay

Your annual gross pay is subject to Australian resident tax and the Medicare levy. For 2026–27, the tax-free threshold is $18,200, then:

  • 15% on income from $18,201 to $45,000
  • 30% on income from $45,001 to $135,000
  • 37% on income from $135,001 to $190,000
  • 45% on income above $190,000

Medicare levy is generally 2% of taxable income. Our take-home pay calculator uses the 2025–26 single reduction thresholds because the 2026–27 thresholds were not confirmed at the time of this guide.

Superannuation Guarantee is 12% of your ordinary earnings, paid on top of your salary. It is not deducted from your pay. The maximum contribution base is $270,830 per year. For example, on a $52,254 salary, super would be $6,270.48. Learn more about super and packaging.

NRL Player Salary as an Example

Even high annual salaries can be expressed as an hourly rate. The NRL salary cap for 2026 is $11.55 million for the top 30 players at each club. The minimum fee for a Top 30 player in 2026 is estimated at $140,000 per year (based on the 2023 minimum of $120,000 increasing by $5,000 each year to 2027).

Using the formula: $140,000 ÷ 52 weeks ÷ 38 hours = approximately $70.85 per hour. That is the hourly equivalent of an NRL player salary at the minimum end. Most NRL players earn much more, with the average Top 30 player earning around $385,000 per year (cap divided by 30).

This example shows that the hourly-to-annual conversion works for any income level. Whether you are on the National Minimum Wage or earning an NRL player salary, the same formula applies. However, NRL players are paid under a collective bargaining agreement with different conditions, not the standard award system.

Important Disclaimer

Annual pay calculated here is hourly rate × hours per week × 52. It assumes the same rate every week, no unpaid overtime, no penalty rates, no allowances, and no salary sacrifice. Super is estimated at 12% of ordinary earnings only, paid on top, and stops at the $270,830 maximum contribution base. Tax is the 2026–27 resident scale with the full tax-free threshold. Medicare uses the 2025–26 single reduction thresholds because the 2026–27 reduction thresholds were not confirmed here. HELP, the Medicare levy surcharge, and salary packaging are not deducted. This is an estimate, not a determination of your pay or tax.

Questions people ask next

How do I convert my hourly rate to an annual salary?

Multiply your hourly rate by the number of hours you work each week, then multiply by 52 weeks. For a standard full-time role of 38 hours per week, the formula is: hourly rate × 38 × 52. For example, the National Minimum Wage of $26.44 per hour gives $26.44 × 38 × 52 = $52,254.88 per year before tax and super.

What is casual loading and how does it affect my pay?

Casual loading is an extra 25% on top of the base hourly rate, compensating for lack of paid leave. For award/agreement-free employees, the casual rate is $33.05 per hour from 1 July 2026. If you use our timesheet tool, check the casual loading box to add 25% to your base rate – do not enter a rate that already includes loading.

How is superannuation calculated on my annual pay?

Superannuation Guarantee is 12% of your ordinary earnings, paid on top of your salary. For example, on a $52,254 annual salary, super would be $6,270.48, but only up to the maximum contribution base of $270,830. Super is not deducted from your pay; it is an extra contribution your employer makes.
