NRL Players Salary: How to Convert Hourly Rates to Annual Pay Under the 2026 Minimum Wage

Based on the national minimum wage of $26.44 per hour for a 38-hour week, annual gross pay is $52,254.80, but NRL players earn significantly more under their collective bargaining agreement.

Understanding Hourly to Annual Conversion

Whether you're comparing a job offer or checking your own pay, converting an hourly rate to an annual salary is straightforward. The formula is simple: hourly rate × hours per week × 52 weeks. This article uses the standard full-time week of 38 hours unless stated otherwise. We'll also look at how this applies to different pay structures, including the NRL players salary under their collective bargaining agreement.

The Basic Formula

Annual gross pay = hourly rate × weekly hours × 52.

For a full-time employee on the national minimum wage of $26.44 per hour (from 1 July 2026), working 38 hours per week:

$26.44 × 38 × 52 = $52,254.80 per year.

This is the gross amount before tax, Medicare, and super. To find your fortnightly pay, multiply your weekly pay by 2. Weekly pay at this rate is $1,004.90, so fortnightly pay is $2,009.80.

National Minimum Wage vs Award Rates

The Fair Work Commission sets the National Minimum Wage each year. From 1 July 2026, it is $1,004.90 per week for 38 hours, or $26.44 per hour. This applies to award/agreement-free employees.

However, most employees are covered by an award. The Fair Work Ombudsman provides pay guides with minimum rates for each award. From 1 July 2026, award minimum wages increased by 4.75%. Award rates are generally higher than the National Minimum Wage.

For casual employees, a 25% loading is added on top of the base rate. So a casual on the National Minimum Wage would earn $33.05 per hour (including loading). Our timesheet allows you to check a box to add casual loading – never enter a rate that already includes loading.

NRL Players Salary: A Different Structure

Professional rugby league players are not covered by awards or the National Minimum Wage. Instead, their pay is governed by a Collective Bargaining Agreement (CBA) between the NRL and the Rugby League Players' Association. The current CBA covers the 2023–2027 seasons and sets minimum terms and conditions, including minimum salaries for NRL and NRLW players.

While exact figures vary by experience and club, an NRL player's salary is typically much higher than award rates. For example, a rookie NRL player might earn around $120,000 per year, while top players earn over $1 million. To convert an NRL player's annual salary back to an hourly rate, you would divide by 52 and then by hours worked per week (often more than 38 due to training and games). However, the CBA ensures players receive additional benefits like superannuation, insurance, and career support.

Superannuation: Paid on Top

Super guarantee is 12% of ordinary earnings, paid by your employer on top of your gross pay. It is not deducted from your salary. The maximum contribution base is $270,830 per year. For an employee earning $52,254.80, the employer adds $6,270.58 in super. For a high earner like an NRL player on $500,000, super is capped at $32,499.60 (12% of $270,830).

Tax and Take-Home Pay

For the 2026–27 financial year, the resident tax rates are:

  • Nil on income up to $18,200
  • 15% on income from $18,201 to $45,000
  • 30% on income from $45,001 to $135,000
  • 37% on income from $135,001 to $190,000
  • 45% on income above $190,000

Medicare levy is generally 2% of taxable income. Use our take-home pay tool for a personalised estimate.

Important Notes

This conversion assumes the same rate every week, no unpaid overtime, no penalty rates, no allowances, and no salary sacrifice. Super is estimated at 12% of ordinary earnings only, paid on top, and stops at the $270,830 maximum contribution base. Tax uses the 2026–27 resident scale with the full tax-free threshold. Medicare uses the 2025–26 single reduction thresholds. HELP, the Medicare levy surcharge, and salary packaging are not deducted. This is an estimate, not a determination of your pay or tax.

Why Understanding Your Pay Matters

Knowing how to convert hourly to annual helps you compare job offers, budget, and plan for tax. Whether you're on the National Minimum Wage, an award rate, or a high-end NRL players salary, the same formula applies. Questions people ask next

How do I calculate annual salary from my hourly rate?

Multiply your hourly rate by the number of hours you work per week, then multiply by 52 weeks. For a standard full-time week of 38 hours, use: hourly rate × 38 × 52. This gives your gross annual pay before tax and super. For example, at the national minimum wage of $26.44 per hour, annual pay is $26.44 × 38 × 52 = $52,254.80. If you work different hours, adjust the weekly hours accordingly.

What is the difference between the National Minimum Wage and award rates?

The National Minimum Wage ($26.44 per hour from 1 July 2026) is the base rate for employees not covered by an award or agreement. Award rates are higher minimums set for specific industries and occupations. From 1 July 2026, award minimum wages increased by 4.75%. Most employees are covered by an award, so their minimum pay is higher than the national minimum wage. NRL players, for example, are covered by a collective bargaining agreement, not an award, and their salaries are negotiated separately.

How does superannuation affect my take-home pay?

Superannuation is paid on top of your gross pay, not deducted from it. Your employer must contribute 12% of your ordinary earnings (up to the maximum contribution base of $270,830) into a super fund. For example, if your gross annual pay is $52,254.80, your employer adds $6,270.58 in super. Your take-home pay is your gross pay minus tax and Medicare levy.
