How to Convert Your Hourly Rate to Annual Salary: A Guide for NSW Teacher Salary

Annual gross pay is your hourly rate multiplied by hours per week (usually 38) times 52 weeks.

Converting Your Hourly Rate to Annual Salary

If you know your hourly rate, you can estimate your annual gross pay using a simple formula: hourly rate × hours per week × 52. This article explains how to do that, what it means for your take-home pay, and how it relates to the NSW teacher salary context.

The Basic Formula

Most full-time roles in Australia are based on a 38-hour week. So the standard calculation is:

Annual gross = hourly rate × 38 × 52

For example, if you earn $30 per hour, your annual gross would be $30 × 38 × 52 = $59,280. This assumes you work the same hours every week, with no unpaid overtime, penalty rates, or allowances. It is a starting point for budgeting and comparing job offers.

If you work a different number of hours each week, use your average weekly hours. Part-time or casual workers can still use this formula with their usual weekly hours.

The Fortnightly View

Many Australians are paid fortnightly. To get your fortnightly gross, multiply your weekly pay by 2. Using the example above, weekly pay is $30 × 38 = $1,140, so fortnightly gross is $2,280. This can help you match your budget to your pay cycle.

National Minimum Wage and Award Rates

The National Minimum Wage from 1 July 2026 is $26.44 per hour, or $1,004.90 per week for 38 hours. Some awards and enterprise agreements set higher rates. For example, the NSW teacher salary is governed by the Crown Employees (Teachers in Schools and Related Employees) Award. While we do not have a specific median figure here, the average full-time weekly earnings in New South Wales (May 2026) are $2,108.80 – this is an average across all occupations, not the median for a NSW teacher salary. Always check your award or agreement for your exact rate.

Casual Loading

If you are a casual employee, you are entitled to a 25% loading on top of the base hourly rate. The casual minimum wage from 1 July 2026 is $33.05 per hour ($26.44 × 1.25). When using our timesheet, you can check a box to add 25% casual loading. Do not enter a rate that already includes the loading – enter the base rate and let the calculator add it.

Tax and Medicare Levy

Once you have your annual gross, you can estimate tax using the 2026–27 resident tax rates:

  • $0 – $18,200: nil
  • 15% on income from $18,201 – $45,000
  • 30% on income from $45,001 – $135,000
  • 37% on income from $135,001 – $190,000
  • 45% on income above $190,000

Medicare levy is generally 2% of your taxable income. For example, on a gross of $80,000, tax (before offsets) would be approximately $5,092 + $10,500 = $15,592, plus Medicare of $1,600. Your actual tax may differ due to deductions, offsets, or the Medicare levy surcharge. See our take-home pay guide for more detail.

Superannuation

Super guarantee is 12% of your ordinary earnings, paid by your employer on top of your salary. It does not reduce your take-home pay. For a gross annual salary of $80,000, your employer contributes an extra $9,600 into super, up to the maximum contribution base of $270,830. Super is not included in your annual gross pay – it is additional. Learn more about super and packaging.

Putting It Together for a NSW Teacher Salary

If you are a NSW teacher, your hourly rate may be set by the award. To convert that to annual salary, use the formula above. Remember that the average full-time weekly earnings in NSW ($2,108.80) is not the median for teachers – it is an average across all industries. For a more accurate picture, refer to your specific award or enterprise agreement. You can also use our reference tables to compare rates.

Important Notes

  • This estimate assumes the same rate every week, no unpaid overtime, no penalty rates, no allowances, and no salary sacrifice.
  • Super is estimated at 12% of ordinary earnings only, paid on top, and stops at the $270,830 maximum contribution base.
  • Tax uses the 2026–27 resident scale with the full tax-free threshold. Medicare uses the 2025–26 single reduction thresholds because the 2026–27 reduction thresholds were not confirmed here.
  • HELP, the Medicare levy surcharge, and salary packaging are not deducted.

This is an estimate, not a determination of your pay or tax. For personalised advice, consult a tax professional or the Australian Taxation Office.

Questions people ask next

How do I convert my hourly rate to an annual salary?

Multiply your hourly rate by the number of hours you work per week, then by 52. For a standard full-time role of 38 hours, the formula is: hourly rate × 38 × 52. This gives your gross annual pay before tax and super. If you work different hours, adjust the weekly figure accordingly.

What tax and Medicare levy apply to a NSW teacher salary?

For 2026–27, resident tax rates are: nil up to $18,200, 15% from $18,201 to $45,000, 30% to $135,000, 37% to $190,000, and 45% above that. Medicare levy is generally 2% of taxable income. Use these brackets on your annual gross pay after any deductions. The exact tax depends on your total income and circumstances.

How is superannuation calculated on an annual salary?

Super guarantee is 12% of your ordinary earnings, paid on top of your salary. For example, if your annual gross is $80,000, your employer contributes an extra $9,600 into super, up to the maximum contribution base of $270,830. Super is not deducted from your pay; it is an additional benefit.
