Prime Minister Salary: How to Convert Your Hourly Rate to Annual Pay

For a 38-hour week and 52-week year, annual gross pay is hourly rate × 38 × 52; the prime minister's salary is set by the Remuneration Tribunal, not by an hourly rate.

Understanding Hourly to Annual Pay with a 38-Hour Week

When you have an hourly rate or a salary offer, converting to annual pay helps you compare earnings. The standard formula is simple: multiply your hourly rate by the number of hours you work each week, then by 52 weeks. For most full-time roles, we assume a 38-hour week, which is the ordinary hours used in many awards and the National Minimum Wage.

The Basic Formula

Annual gross pay = hourly rate × hours per week × 52.

If you work 38 hours per week, the calculation becomes:

Annual gross = hourly rate × 38 × 52.

For example, at the National Minimum Wage of $26.44 per hour (from 1 July 2026), the annual gross is $26.44 × 38 × 52 = $52,245.44. This matches the Fair Work Ombudsman's weekly rate of $1,004.90 multiplied by 52.

Fortnightly Pay

Many employers pay fortnightly. Your fortnightly gross is simply your weekly pay multiplied by 2. For the minimum wage, that's $1,004.90 × 2 = $2,009.80 before tax and super.

National Minimum Wage and Award Rates

The Fair Work Commission sets the National Minimum Wage each year. From 1 July 2026, it is $26.44 per hour or $1,004.90 per week for 38 ordinary hours. This applies to employees not covered by an award or agreement. Award minimum wages increased by 4.75% from the same date, as noted in the pay guides from the Fair Work Ombudsman.

Casual Loading

If you are a casual employee, you are entitled to a 25% loading on top of the minimum wage. That gives a casual rate of $33.05 per hour. When using our timesheet, you can check the box to add casual loading. Never enter a rate that already includes casual loading – the tool adds it for you.

Superannuation: Paid on Top

Superannuation guarantee is 12% of your ordinary earnings, paid by your employer on top of your gross pay. For 2026–27, the maximum contribution base is $270,830. If your annual earnings exceed that, super only applies up to the cap. For most workers, super adds 12% to your total remuneration. For example, on a $60,000 salary, super would be $7,200 per year, making total package $67,200.

Tax and Medicare

Your gross pay is subject to Pay As You Go (PAYG) tax withholding. The 2026–27 resident tax rates are:

  • Nil on the first $18,200
  • 15% on income from $18,201 to $45,000
  • 30% on income from $45,001 to $135,000
  • 37% on income from $135,001 to $190,000
  • 45% on income above $190,000

Medicare levy is generally 2% of taxable income. The 2025–26 single reduction thresholds are used for this estimate because the 2026–27 thresholds were not confirmed. Use our take-home pay calculator for a personalised estimate.

The Prime Minister Salary Context

The phrase "prime minister salary" often comes up when people compare top earnings. The prime minister's salary is not set by an hourly rate or by the Fair Work Commission. Instead, it is determined by the Remuneration Tribunal under the Remuneration Tribunal (Members of Parliament) Determination 2026. The base salary for all parliamentarians is set, and additional salary is paid for holding office such as Prime Minister, Minister, or Presiding Officer. The exact figures are published on the page. While the prime minister salary is much higher than the national minimum wage, the same conversion principles apply if you know the annual figure – you can divide by 52 to get a weekly equivalent, or by 38 to get a notional hourly rate. However, the prime minister does not receive penalty rates or casual loading.

Using Our Reference Tables

Our reference tables provide the latest National Minimum Wage, award rates, and average earnings. The Australian Bureau of Statistics reports Average Weekly Earnings for full-time adult ordinary time at $2,083.70 per week (May 2026). That equates to an hourly rate of about $54.83 for a 38-hour week. All employees total earnings (including part-time) average $1,579.20 per week.

Important Notes

  • This conversion assumes you work the same number of hours every week, with no unpaid overtime, penalty rates, allowances, or salary sacrifice.
  • Super is estimated at 12% of ordinary earnings, paid on top, and stops at the $270,830 maximum contribution base.
  • Tax is based on the 2026–27 resident scale with the full tax-free threshold. HELP repayments, Medicare levy surcharge, and salary packaging are not deducted.
  • The estimate is not a determination of your actual pay or tax.

Summary

Whether you are checking the prime minister salary or your own hourly rate, the formula remains the same: hourly × 38 × 52 gives annual gross. Use our super and packaging page to understand how super fits in, and our average pay page to compare with national averages. For casual workers, remember the 25% loading. For award-covered employees, check the specific pay guide for your industry.

Questions people ask next

How is the prime minister salary determined?

The prime minister salary is set by the Remuneration Tribunal, not by an hourly rate or award. It includes a base parliamentarian salary plus additional salary for the office of Prime Minister. The exact figure is published in the Remuneration Tribunal's determinations. You can find details on the page.

Does the national minimum wage apply to the prime minister?

No. The national minimum wage, set by the Fair Work Commission at $26.44 per hour from 1 July 2026, applies to employees in the national system who are award/agreement free. The prime minister is not covered by this system; their salary is set separately by the Remuneration Tribunal.

How do I convert my hourly rate to annual pay for a 38-hour week?

Multiply your hourly rate by 38 (hours per week) and then by 52 (weeks per year). For example, $30 per hour gives $30 × 38 × 52 = $59,280 gross per year. This assumes no unpaid overtime, penalty rates, or allowances. Use our [hourly conversion](/topics/hourly-conversion) tool for a quick estimate.
