Public Benevolent Institution Salary Sacrifice: Convert Your Hourly Rate to Annual Pay
For a 38-hour week, your annual gross pay is your hourly rate multiplied by 1,976 hours (38 × 52).
Converting Your Hourly Rate to Annual Pay
When you have an hourly rate or a salary offer, understanding your annual, fortnightly, and weekly pay helps you budget and compare jobs. The standard formula is simple: multiply your hourly rate by the number of hours you work each week, then multiply by 52 weeks. For a full-time employee working 38 hours per week, that’s hourly rate × 38 × 52.
For example, the National Minimum Wage from 1 July 2026 is $26.44 per hour. For a 38‑hour week, that gives a weekly pay of $1,004.90 and an annual gross of $52,254.80. A casual employee receives an extra 25% loading, making the casual minimum $33.05 per hour. Our timesheet has a checkbox to add that loading automatically – never type a rate that already includes casual loading.
Fortnightly Pay and Super
Your fortnightly pay is simply your weekly pay multiplied by two. Using the minimum wage example, that’s $2,009.80 before tax. Superannuation is paid on top of your ordinary earnings at 12% (the super guarantee rate for 2026–27). So your employer must contribute an additional 12% of your ordinary time earnings into your super fund, up to the maximum contribution base of $270,830. This super is not deducted from your pay; it’s an extra cost for the employer.
Award Rates vs. the National Minimum Wage
The National Minimum Wage is the legal floor for most employees, but many industries have award rates set by the Fair Work Commission. Awards can specify higher minimum pay, penalty rates, allowances, and overtime rules. If you are covered by an award, your base rate may be above the national minimum. Our calculator uses the rate you enter; it does not automatically apply award conditions. For award-specific information, see our pay guides.
Tax and Take-Home Pay
Your annual gross pay is not what you take home. The Australian Taxation Office applies a progressive tax scale. For 2026–27, residents pay:
- Nil on the first $18,200
- 15% on income from $18,201 to $45,000
- 30% on income from $45,001 to $135,000
- 37% on income from $135,001 to $190,000
- 45% on income above $190,000
Plus a Medicare levy of 2% (generally). Our take-home pay estimate uses these rates and the single reduction thresholds for Medicare from 2025–26 because the 2026–27 thresholds were not confirmed here. It does not deduct HELP repayments, the Medicare levy surcharge, or any salary packaging.
Public Benevolent Institution Salary Sacrifice
If you work for a public benevolent institution (PBI), you may be able to salary sacrifice part of your pre-tax income for certain benefits, such as mortgage payments, rent, or living expenses. This reduces your taxable income and can increase your take-home pay. However, our calculator does not include salary sacrifice arrangements. The term public benevolent institution salary sacrifice refers to a specific FBT-exempt benefit available to employees of registered charities and certain not-for-profits. If you have such an arrangement, your actual tax may be lower than our estimate. For more details, see our super and packaging page.
Using the Timesheet
Our timesheet is the home page. You type your base hourly rate – for example, $30.00. If you are a casual, check the “Add 25% casual loading” box. The calculator then shows:
- Weekly pay (base rate × 38, or with loading)
- Fortnightly pay (weekly × 2)
- Annual gross (weekly × 52)
- Estimated tax and Medicare
- Estimated super (12% of ordinary earnings, capped at $270,830)
Remember: the annual figure assumes you work the same hours every week, with no unpaid overtime, no penalty rates, no allowances, and no salary sacrifice. It is an estimate, not a determination of your actual pay.
Average Earnings and Comparisons
The Australian Bureau of Statistics publishes Average Weekly Earnings. For May 2026, full-time adult ordinary time earnings were $2,083.70 per week. All employees (including part-time) averaged $1,579.20 per week. These are averages across all industries and occupations, not medians for a specific job. Our average pay page has more context. For job-specific pay, see job pay.
Key Points to Remember
- Annual gross = hourly rate × hours per week × 52. We assume 38 hours unless you enter a different number.
- Super is 12% on top, up to the contribution base.
- Casual loading is 25% extra; use the checkbox.
- Tax is estimated using 2026–27 resident rates with the full tax-free threshold.
- Public benevolent institution salary sacrifice can reduce your taxable income but is not included in our calculator.
- Always check your award or agreement for your correct minimum rate.
