Understanding Your Annual Salary: QLD Health Salary Packaging and Hourly Rate Conversion
For a full-time employee working 38 hours per week, your annual gross pay is your hourly rate multiplied by 1,976 hours.
Converting Your Hourly Rate to Annual Pay
When you have an hourly rate or a salary offer, the first step is to understand your annual gross pay. The standard formula is:
Annual gross = hourly rate × hours per week × 52 weeks
For a full-time employee, we assume a 38-hour week, as this is the ordinary hours for many awards and the National Employment Standards. This gives you 1,976 hours per year (38 × 52). If you work a different number of hours, adjust accordingly.
Why 38 Hours?
The Fair Work Ombudsman defines full-time hours as 38 per week, unless a specific award or agreement says otherwise. Using 38 hours gives you a consistent baseline for comparing offers. For part-time or casual roles, your weekly hours may vary, so multiply by your actual average hours.
Fortnightly Pay
Many employers pay fortnightly. To find your gross fortnightly amount, multiply your weekly pay by 2. For a 38-hour week, that is:
Fortnightly gross = hourly rate × 38 × 2
This can help you budget between pay cycles.
State Differences in Ordinary-Time Earnings
Earnings vary across Australia. According to the Australian Bureau of Statistics, the national average weekly ordinary-time earnings for full-time adults in May 2026 was $2,083.70. In Queensland, the figure was $2,039.70 per week – slightly below the national average. This is an average across all industries and occupations, not a median for any specific job.
If you are a Queensland Health employee, your base salary may be set by an award or enterprise agreement. However, you may also have access to QLD health salary packaging, which can reduce your taxable income and increase your take-home pay. Our calculator does not include salary packaging, so you should factor it in separately when estimating your net income.
Minimum Wage, Awards, and Casual Loading
The National Minimum Wage from 1 July 2026 is $26.44 per hour for a full-time employee working 38 hours. Casual employees receive a 25% loading on top, making the casual minimum $33.05 per hour. This loading compensates for the lack of paid leave.
Award rates are often higher than the minimum. For example, a hospitality award might set a higher base rate plus penalty rates for weekends or nights. Always check the relevant award on the Fair Work Ombudsman website. Our hourly conversion page explains how to apply these rates.
Superannuation
Super is paid on top of your ordinary earnings. The super guarantee is 12% of your gross salary, up to the maximum contribution base of $270,830. For a full-time worker on the minimum wage ($26.44/hr), annual super would be:
$26.44 × 38 × 52 = $52,269.44 (gross) Super: $52,269.44 × 12% = $6,272.33
This is an estimate; actual super may vary if your earnings exceed the cap.
Tax and Take-Home Pay
Your take-home pay depends on tax and the Medicare levy. For 2026–27, the resident tax rates are:
- $0 – $18,200: nil
- $18,201 – $45,000: 15%
- $45,001 – $135,000: 30%
- $135,001 – $190,000: 37%
- $190,001+: 45%
Medicare levy is generally 2% of taxable income. Our calculator uses the 2025–26 single reduction thresholds because the 2026–27 thresholds were not confirmed. This is an estimate only.
For example, a Queensland Health employee earning $80,000 gross with salary packaging might reduce taxable income to $75,000, saving on tax. Our super and packaging page has more details.
Using the Timesheet
Our timesheet is the home page. Enter your base hourly rate – do not include casual loading. If you are a casual, check the box to add 25% loading on top. The calculator then shows your annual, fortnightly, and weekly gross, plus estimated tax, Medicare, and super.
Remember: the annual figure assumes the same rate every week, no unpaid overtime, no penalty rates, no allowances, and no salary sacrifice. Super is estimated at 12% of ordinary earnings only, paid on top, and stops at the $270,830 maximum contribution base. Tax uses the resident scale with the full tax-free threshold.
