RN Salary: Convert Your Hourly Rate to Annual Pay with Our 38-Hour Week Calculator

For a 38-hour week, your annual gross pay is your hourly rate multiplied by 38 hours per week times 52 weeks.

Understanding Your RN Salary

If you're a registered nurse (RN) or any other employee paid by the hour, converting your hourly rate to an annual figure helps you compare job offers and plan your finances. Our timesheet calculator lets you enter your base hourly rate and instantly see your annual, fortnightly, and weekly pay. This article explains the formula, the role of award rates, casual loading, superannuation, and tax – all tailored to Australian conditions.

The 38-Hour Week Formula

The standard full-time week in Australia is 38 ordinary hours. To find your annual gross salary, multiply your hourly rate by 38, then by 52 weeks:

Annual gross = hourly rate × 38 × 52

For example, if your RN salary is $35.00 per hour, your annual gross is $35 × 38 × 52 = $69,160. This assumes you work every week of the year with no unpaid leave or overtime. The Fair Work Commission sets the national minimum wage at $26.44 per hour from 1 July 2026, but most RNs earn more under their award.

Fortnightly and Weekly Pay

Many employers pay fortnightly. To find your fortnightly gross, multiply your weekly pay by 2:

  • Weekly pay = hourly rate × 38
  • Fortnightly pay = weekly pay × 2

Using the $35/hour example: weekly = $1,330, fortnightly = $2,660. This is useful for budgeting between pay cycles.

Award Rates vs Minimum Wage

Registered nurses are typically covered by the Nurses Award 2020, which sets minimum pay rates higher than the national minimum wage. The Fair Work Ombudsman publishes pay guides for each award, including classification levels and allowances. Our calculator works for any hourly rate, whether it's the award rate, an enterprise agreement rate, or a negotiated salary. Always check your award or agreement to confirm your correct classification.

Casual Loading

If you work as a casual RN, you are entitled to a 25% loading on top of the base hourly rate. Our calculator has a checkbox marked "Add 25% casual loading". When you tick it, the tool adds 25% to the rate you entered. Do not enter a rate that already includes casual loading – enter your base rate and let the calculator apply the loading. For example, if your base rate is $35, the casual rate becomes $43.75 per hour. The Fair Work Commission confirms that casual loading is 25% of the national minimum wage, and the same principle applies to award rates.

Superannuation

Superannuation guarantee is 12% of your ordinary earnings, paid on top of your salary by your employer. It is not deducted from your pay. The maximum contribution base for 2026-27 is $270,830. Our calculator estimates super as 12% of your annual gross, but if your salary exceeds the cap, super stops at that limit. For more details, see our super and packaging page.

Tax Estimates

Your take-home pay depends on the tax withheld. For 2026-27, the resident tax rates are:

  • $0 – $18,200: nil
  • $18,201 – $45,000: 15% of excess over $18,200
  • $45,001 – $135,000: $4,020 + 30% of excess over $45,000
  • $135,001 – $190,000: $31,020 + 37% of excess over $135,000
  • $190,001+: $51,420 + 45% of excess over $190,000

Plus the Medicare levy of 2% (single thresholds from 2025-26 are used because 2026-27 reductions were not confirmed). Our calculator provides an estimate only – it does not account for HELP repayments, the Medicare levy surcharge, or salary packaging. Visit our take-home pay page for more details.

Important Disclaimer

Annual pay here is hourly rate × hours per week × 52. It assumes the same rate every week, no unpaid overtime, no penalty rates, no allowances, and no salary sacrifice. Super is estimated at 12% of ordinary earnings only, paid on top, and stops at the $270,830 maximum contribution base. Tax is the 2026–27 resident scale with the full tax-free threshold. Medicare uses the 2025–26 single reduction thresholds because the 2026–27 reduction thresholds were not confirmed here. HELP, the Medicare levy surcharge, and salary packaging are not deducted. This is an estimate, not a determination of your pay or tax.

Using the Calculator for Your RN Salary

Whether you're a new graduate or an experienced nurse, our pay guides can help you find the correct award classification. Enter your base hourly rate (without casual loading) into the timesheet and let the tool do the rest. You'll see annual, fortnightly, and weekly figures, plus estimated tax and super. Remember that actual pay may vary due to shift penalties, allowances, and enterprise agreements. Always consult your employer or the Fair Work Ombudsman for precise entitlements.

Open the same rate on the home timesheet. Read the reference tables before treating a figure as your pay.
