Salary Calculator with Salary Sacrifice: Convert Hourly Pay to Annual, Fortnightly, and After-Tax Income
For a full-time employee working 38 hours per week, annual gross pay is hourly rate × 38 × 52, with super paid on top and tax and Medicare deducted.
Understanding Your Hourly to Annual Conversion
When you know your hourly rate, you can estimate your annual, fortnightly, and after-tax income using a simple formula. Our salary calculator with salary sacrifice helps you see the numbers before any packaging arrangements. The basic calculation is: annual gross = hourly rate × hours per week × 52. For a standard full-time employee, we assume 38 hours per week, as set by the Fair Work Commission for the National Minimum Wage. This gives a straightforward conversion, but remember it assumes the same rate every week with no unpaid overtime, penalty rates, allowances, or salary sacrifice.
The Formula in Practice
Let's say you earn $30 per hour. Working 38 hours a week, your annual gross is $30 × 38 × 52 = $59,280. Your fortnightly pay (before tax) is $30 × 38 × 2 = $2,280. This is the starting point for understanding your total remuneration, including superannuation and tax.
Distinguishing Minimum Wage, Award Rates, and Casual Loading
The National Minimum Wage from 1 July 2026 is $26.44 per hour, or $1,004.90 per week for 38 hours. Casual employees receive a 25% loading on top, making the casual minimum $33.05 per hour. Award rates may be higher than the minimum, and they vary by industry and role. Our pay guides can help you check applicable rates. When using the calculator, enter your base hourly rate (the rate before casual loading). If you are a casual, tick the checkbox to add 25% loading automatically. Never enter a rate that already includes loading.
Superannuation: Paid on Top
Super guarantee is 12% of your ordinary earnings, paid by your employer on top of your gross pay. For the $30 per hour example, the super contribution would be $59,280 × 12% = $7,113.60 per year, up to the maximum contribution base of $270,830. This means your total employment cost is higher than your gross pay. Our super and packaging page explains more about how super interacts with salary sacrifice.
Tax and the Medicare Levy
Once you have your annual gross, you can estimate your tax using the 2026–27 resident tax rates:
- $0 – $18,200: nil
- $18,201 – $45,000: 15% of the excess over $18,200
- $45,001 – $135,000: $4,020 plus 30% of the excess over $45,000
- $135,001 – $190,000: $31,020 plus 37% of the excess over $135,000
- $190,001 and above: $51,370 plus 45% of the excess over $190,000
In addition, the Medicare levy is generally 2% of taxable income. Our calculator uses the 2025–26 single reduction thresholds because the 2026–27 thresholds were not confirmed. For a single person earning $59,280, the tax would be approximately $4,020 + 30% × ($59,280 - $45,000) = $4,020 + $4,284 = $8,304, plus Medicare levy of $1,185.60, giving total deductions of $9,489.60. After-tax income would be $49,790.40. This is an estimate; your actual tax may differ due to deductions, offsets, or salary sacrifice.
Fortnightly and Weekly Breakdown
Knowing your fortnightly pay helps with budgeting. For the $30 per hour example, fortnightly gross is $2,280. After tax and Medicare, it would be roughly $1,915. You can use our the timesheet to track hours and pay. The calculator also shows weekly amounts: simply divide fortnightly by two.
Average Pay Comparisons
The Australian Bureau of Statistics reports average weekly earnings for full-time adult ordinary time at $2,083.70 per week (May 2026). All employees total earnings average $1,579.20 per week, which includes part-time workers. These are averages, not medians for any specific job. For job-specific pay, see our job pay page.
Salary Sacrifice and the Calculator
While our salary calculator with salary sacrifice does not deduct salary packaging, it provides a base estimate before such arrangements. Salary sacrifice reduces your taxable income, which can lower your tax and Medicare levy. For example, if you salary sacrifice $10,000 into super, your taxable income drops from $59,280 to $49,280, reducing tax. The calculator helps you see the starting point; you can then apply your own packaging figures.
Important Disclaimer
Annual pay here is hourly rate × hours per week × 52. It assumes the same rate every week, no unpaid overtime, no penalty rates, no allowances, and no salary sacrifice. Super is estimated at 12% of ordinary earnings only, paid on top, and stops at the $270,830 maximum contribution base. Tax is the 2026–27 resident scale with the full tax-free threshold. Medicare uses the 2025–26 single reduction thresholds because the 2026–27 reduction thresholds were not confirmed here. HELP, the Medicare levy surcharge, and salary packaging are not deducted. This is an estimate, not a determination of your pay or tax.
