Salary Meaning: How to Convert Your Hourly Rate to Annual Pay in Australia
Annual pay is hourly rate × 38 hours per week × 52 weeks, assuming a full-time schedule, with super paid on top and tax deducted according to the 2026–27 resident scale.
Understanding Salary Meaning in Australia
When you see a job offer with a yearly figure, you are looking at a salary. According to the Fair Work Ombudsman, a salary is "an agreement to be paid a specified amount of pay for work over a 12 month period". This is different from an annualised wage arrangement, which is a fixed regular amount that covers specific award entitlements like penalties and overtime. Understanding the salary meaning helps you compare job offers and know what you will actually take home.
In Australia, most full-time employees work 38 hours per week. Your annual salary is simply your hourly rate multiplied by 38 hours, then by 52 weeks. This site uses that assumption for all conversions unless you enter a different weekly hours figure.
How to Convert Hourly to Annual Pay
The basic formula is:
Annual gross pay = hourly rate × hours per week × 52
For a standard 38-hour week, that becomes:
Annual gross pay = hourly rate × 38 × 52
For example, if your hourly rate is $30.00:
- Weekly pay = $30.00 × 38 = $1,140.00
- Fortnightly pay = $1,140.00 × 2 = $2,280.00
- Annual gross pay = $1,140.00 × 52 = $59,280.00
This is your pay before any deductions. The hourly conversion tool on this site does the maths for you.
What About Fortnightly Pay?
Many employers pay fortnightly. Your fortnightly amount is simply your weekly pay times two. Using the example above, $1,140.00 per week becomes $2,280.00 per fortnight. This can help you budget if you are paid on that cycle.
Minimum Wage and Award Rates
The National Minimum Wage from 1 July 2026 is $26.44 per hour, or $1,004.90 per week for a 38-hour week. Casual employees receive a 25% loading, making the minimum $33.05 per hour. However, most employees are covered by an award or enterprise agreement that sets higher minimum rates. Always check your applicable award using the pay guides or the minimum wage page.
If you are a casual, remember that the 25% loading is added on top of the base hourly rate. Do not enter a rate that already includes casual loading into the calculator; use the base rate and tick the casual loading checkbox. For more details, see casual loading.
Tax and Medicare
Your annual salary is taxed according to the 2026–27 resident tax rates:
- $0 – $18,200: nil
- $18,201 – $45,000: 15¢ for each $1 over $18,200
- $45,001 – $135,000: $4,020 plus 30¢ for each $1 over $45,000
- $135,001 – $190,000: $31,020 plus 37¢ for each $1 over $135,000
- $190,001 and over: $51,420 plus 45¢ for each $1 over $190,000
In addition, most residents pay a Medicare levy of 2% of taxable income. The take-home pay page shows how these deductions affect your net income.
Superannuation Guarantee
Super is paid on top of your salary, not deducted from it. From 1 July 2026, the super guarantee rate is 12% of your ordinary time earnings, up to a maximum contribution base of $270,830 per year. For example, if your annual salary is $80,000, your employer must contribute an extra $9,600 to your super fund. This is not part of your take-home pay. Learn more on the super and packaging page.
Differences in Ordinary-Time Earnings
The Australian Bureau of Statistics reports that full-time adult ordinary time earnings averaged $2,083.70 per week in May 2026. That equates to an annual salary of about $108,352. However, when all employees (including part-time and casual) are included, average total earnings are $1,579.20 per week, or about $82,118 per year. This gap shows why it is important to know your own hours and rate rather than relying on averages.

Disclaimer
Annual pay here is hourly rate × hours per week × 52. It assumes the same rate every week, no unpaid overtime, no penalty rates, no allowances, and no salary sacrifice. Super is estimated at 12% of ordinary earnings only, paid on top, and stops at the $270,830 maximum contribution base. Tax is the 2026–27 resident scale with the full tax-free threshold. Medicare uses the 2025–26 single reduction thresholds because the 2026–27 reduction thresholds were not confirmed here. HELP, the Medicare levy surcharge, and salary packaging are not deducted. This is an estimate, not a determination of your pay or tax.
