Hourly to Annual Pay Calculator: Including Salary Packaging Car Options
For a full-time employee working 38 hours per week, annual gross pay is your hourly rate multiplied by 1,976 hours (38 × 52).
Understanding Your Hourly to Annual Pay
Whether you are negotiating a salary offer or checking your current rate, converting your hourly pay to an annual figure helps you compare jobs and plan your budget. The standard formula is simple: hourly rate × hours per week × 52 weeks. For most full-time employees in Australia, the assumed working week is 38 hours, as defined by the Fair Work Ombudsman. This gives an annual base of 1,976 hours (38 × 52).
The National Minimum Wage vs Award Rates
The National Minimum Wage from 1 July 2026 is $26.44 per hour, or $1,004.90 per week for a 38-hour week. Casual employees receive an additional 25% loading, making the casual minimum $33.05 per hour. This rate applies to employees not covered by a modern award or enterprise agreement.
However, most workers are covered by an award specific to their industry or occupation. Award rates are generally higher than the National Minimum Wage and include classifications for skill levels, experience, and shift work. For example, a retail employee under the General Retail Industry Award may have a higher base rate than the national minimum. Always check your award on the Fair Work Ombudsman website or use our pay guides to find the correct rate for your role.
How to Calculate Annual Gross Pay
To estimate your annual salary:
- Start with your base hourly rate. Do not include casual loading yet – that is added separately if applicable.
- Multiply by your weekly hours. For a standard full-time role, use 38 hours. If you work part-time or different hours, use your actual weekly hours.
- Multiply by 52 weeks. This assumes you work every week of the year with no unpaid leave.
Example: $30.00 per hour × 38 hours × 52 weeks = $59,280 per year.
If you are a casual employee, add 25% casual loading on top of the base rate before calculating annual pay. For instance, a base rate of $30.00 becomes $37.50 with loading, giving an annual gross of $74,100. Our the timesheet lets you check a box to automatically add casual loading.
Fortnightly Pay and Budgeting
Many Australian employers pay fortnightly. To find your gross fortnightly pay, simply double your weekly pay. Weekly pay is hourly rate × hours per week. For a 38-hour week at $30.00 per hour, weekly pay is $1,140, so fortnightly is $2,280. This can help you align your budget with your pay cycle.
Superannuation: Paid on Top
Your employer must pay superannuation guarantee contributions on top of your ordinary earnings. From 1 July 2026, the super guarantee rate is 12% of your ordinary time earnings, up to the maximum contribution base of $270,830 per year. Super is not deducted from your hourly rate – it is an additional cost to your employer. For example, on a $59,280 annual salary, your employer would contribute $7,113.60 in super (12% of $59,280). This is not included in the annual pay figure shown on your payslip, but it is part of your total remuneration package.
Tax and Take-Home Pay
Your annual gross pay is before tax. The Australian Taxation Office applies the 2026–27 resident tax rates:
- $0 – $18,200: Nil
- $18,201 – $45,000: 15% for each dollar over $18,200
- $45,001 – $135,000: 30% for each dollar over $45,000
- $135,001 – $190,000: 37% for each dollar over $135,000
- $190,001 and over: 45% for each dollar over $190,000
Plus, the Medicare levy of 2% generally applies (with possible reductions for low-income earners). Our calculator uses the 2025–26 single reduction thresholds because the 2026–27 thresholds were not confirmed at the time of this guide. For a more detailed estimate of your net pay, see our take-home pay page.
Salary Packaging a Car
If you are considering salary packaging a car, your taxable income reduces because the lease payments and running costs are taken from your pre-tax salary. This can lower your tax bill but also reduces your super guarantee base (since super is calculated on your reduced ordinary earnings). The annual pay estimate on this page does not include any salary sacrifice arrangements. For a full breakdown of how packaging affects your pay, refer to our super and packaging guide.
Average Weekly Earnings vs Your Job
The Australian Bureau of Statistics publishes Average Weekly Earnings figures. In May 2026, full-time adult ordinary time earnings averaged $2,083.70 per week, while all employees (including part-time) averaged $1,579.20 per week. These are averages across all industries and states, not medians for a specific job. Your actual pay may be higher or lower depending on your occupation, experience, and location. Do not use these averages as a benchmark for your role – instead, consult industry-specific data from the Fair Work Ombudsman or your union.
Important Disclaimer
This annual pay estimate is calculated as hourly rate × hours per week × 52. It assumes the same rate every week, no unpaid overtime, no penalty rates, no allowances, and no salary sacrifice. Super is estimated at 12% of ordinary earnings only, paid on top, and stops at the $270,830 maximum contribution base. Tax uses the 2026–27 resident scale with the full tax-free threshold. Medicare uses the 2025–26 single reduction thresholds because the 2026–27 reduction thresholds were not confirmed here. HELP, the Medicare levy surcharge, and salary packaging are not deducted. This is an estimate, not a determination of your pay or tax.
