Hourly to Annual Pay: How Salary Packaging Health Affects Your Take-Home
For a full-time worker on the National Minimum Wage of $26.44 per hour, working 38 hours a week, the annual gross pay is approximately $52,281.
From Hourly to Annual: The Simple Formula
To convert your hourly rate to an annual salary, use the formula: hourly rate × hours per week × 52. This assumes you work the same number of hours every week, with no unpaid overtime, penalty rates, or allowances. For a standard full-time role, we assume 38 hours per week, as set by the Fair Work Ombudsman. For example, on the National Minimum Wage of $26.44 per hour, the annual gross is:
$26.44 × 38 × 52 = $52,281 (rounded).
If you are a casual employee, remember to tick the 25% casual loading checkbox on the timesheet – never enter a rate that already includes loading. The calculator will add it on top.
Why 38 Hours and 52 Weeks?
The 38-hour week is the standard full-time week under the Fair Work Act. Using 52 weeks gives a consistent annual figure, even though some years have 53 weeks or you may take unpaid leave. This estimate is a starting point for budgeting and comparing job offers.
Tax and Medicare: What Comes Off Your Annual Pay
Once you have your annual gross, the Australian Taxation Office applies the 2026–27 resident tax rates:
- $0 – $18,200: nil
- $18,201 – $45,000: 15% on the excess over $18,200
- $45,001 – $135,000: 30% on the excess over $45,000
- $135,001 – $190,000: 37% on the excess over $135,000
- Over $190,000: 45% on the excess over $190,000
Plus, the Medicare levy is generally 2% of your taxable income. The 2026–27 reduction thresholds were not confirmed here, so we use the 2025–26 single reduction thresholds. If your income is below those thresholds, the levy may be reduced or waived.
Salary Packaging Health and Tax
Salary packaging health (e.g., salary sacrificing for private health insurance) can lower your taxable income, potentially moving you into a lower tax bracket or reducing your Medicare levy. However, this article does not deduct salary packaging amounts – it is an estimate only. For a personalised calculation, see take-home pay and super and packaging.
Superannuation: Paid on Top
The super guarantee is 12% of your ordinary earnings, paid by your employer on top of your salary. It is not deducted from your gross pay. The maximum contribution base is $270,830 per year – if your annual earnings exceed that, super stops at the cap. For most workers, this cap does not apply. For example, on the National Minimum Wage annual of $52,281, super would be $6,274 (12% of $52,281).
Distinguishing Minimum Wage, Award Rates, and Casual Loading
- National Minimum Wage: $26.44 per hour (from 1 July 2026) – the legal floor for award-free employees.
- Award rates: Specific to industries and roles, set by the Fair Work Commission. They are often higher than the minimum wage. Check pay guides for your award.
- Casual loading: 25% on top of the base rate, making the casual minimum $33.05 per hour. This compensates for no paid leave.
Remember, super is paid on top of the loaded rate for casuals.
Fortnightly Pay: A Handy Check
If you are paid fortnightly, multiply your weekly pay by 2. For a full-time worker on $26.44 per hour, weekly pay is $1,004.90 (38 hours), so fortnightly is $2,009.80 before tax. This helps align with common pay cycles.
Using the Reference Tables
For more precise conversions, see our reference tables which show annual equivalents for various hourly rates. The hourly conversion page explains the formula in detail.
A Note on Averages
The Australian Bureau of Statistics' Average Weekly Earnings (May 2026) show full-time adult ordinary time earnings of $2,083.70 per week. That is an average, not a median for any specific job. Total earnings for all employees (including part-time) average $1,579.20 per week. Do not use these averages as a substitute for your own rate.
Disclaimer
Annual pay here is hourly rate × hours per week × 52. It assumes the same rate every week, no unpaid overtime, no penalty rates, no allowances, and no salary sacrifice. Super is estimated at 12% of ordinary earnings only, paid on top, and stops at the $270,830 maximum contribution base. Tax is the 2026–27 resident scale with the full tax-free threshold. Medicare uses the 2025–26 single reduction thresholds because the 2026–27 reduction thresholds were not confirmed here. HELP, the Medicare levy surcharge, and salary packaging are not deducted. This is an estimate, not a determination of your pay or tax.
