How to Convert Your Hourly Rate to Annual Pay with a Salary Sacrifice Car Australia Guide
Annual gross pay is your hourly rate × 38 hours per week × 52 weeks, assuming a standard full-time week.
How to Convert Hourly Pay to Annual Salary
If you earn an hourly wage or are considering a salary offer, the standard conversion uses a 38-hour week and a 52-week year. The formula is simple: hourly rate × hours per week × 52 = annual gross salary. This article explains the calculation, the role of the National Minimum Wage, casual loading, superannuation, and how a salary sacrifice car Australia arrangement can affect your figures.
The Basic Formula
For a full-time employee working 38 hours each week, the annual gross pay is:
Annual gross = hourly rate × 38 × 52
For example, at the National Minimum Wage of $26.44 per hour (from 1 July 2026), the annual gross is $26.44 × 38 × 52 = $52,245.44. This assumes the same rate every week, no unpaid overtime, no penalty rates, and no allowances. The fortnightly pay is simply the weekly pay multiplied by two: $26.44 × 38 × 2 = $2,009.44 before tax.
If you work different hours, adjust the hours per week in the formula. The hourly conversion tool on this site lets you enter your own hours.
Minimum Wage, Award Rates, and Casual Loading
The National Minimum Wage is set by the Fair Work Commission. From 1 July 2026, it is $26.44 per hour for permanent employees. Casual employees receive a 25% loading on top, making the casual minimum $33.05 per hour. Never enter a rate that already includes casual loading into the timesheet; instead, use the base rate and tick the casual loading checkbox.
Award rates vary by industry and occupation. They are higher than the minimum wage and include specific penalty rates, allowances, and overtime. The Fair Work Ombudsman provides pay guides for each award. If you are covered by an award, your hourly rate may be different from the minimum.
Superannuation Paid on Top
Super guarantee is 12% of your ordinary earnings, paid by your employer on top of your salary. For the minimum wage example, the super contribution would be $52,245.44 × 12% = $6,269.45, up to the maximum contribution base of $270,830. Super is not deducted from your pay; it is an additional cost to the employer. When comparing salary offers, remember that your total employment cost includes super. See super and packaging for more on salary sacrifice.
Tax and Take-Home Pay
Your annual gross is not what you take home. Tax is deducted using the 2026-27 resident rates:
- $0 – $18,200: nil
- $18,201 – $45,000: 15%
- $45,001 – $135,000: 30%
- $135,001 – $190,000: 37%
- Above $190,000: 45%
Plus a 2% Medicare levy (based on 2025-26 single reduction thresholds as 2026-27 thresholds were not confirmed). For the minimum wage example, the annual tax would be approximately $5,092 plus Medicare, leaving a take-home pay of around $45,000. Use the take-home pay calculator for a precise estimate.
Fortnightly Pay
Many Australian employees are paid fortnightly. To find your fortnightly gross, multiply your weekly gross by two. For a $30 per hour rate at 38 hours: weekly = $1,140, fortnightly = $2,280. This is useful for budgeting and comparing with salary offers that are often quoted annually or fortnightly.
Salary Sacrifice Car Australia
A salary sacrifice car Australia arrangement allows you to use pre-tax income to pay for a vehicle, reducing your taxable income. This does not change your hourly rate or the annual gross calculated from it, but it lowers the amount subject to tax. For example, if you sacrifice $10,000 per year, your taxable income becomes $42,245.44 instead of $52,245.44, saving you tax at your marginal rate. Super is still calculated on your ordinary earnings before sacrifice, so your super contributions are unaffected. Always check with your employer and the Australian Taxation Office for eligibility and fringe benefits tax implications.
Average Weekly Earnings
The Australian Bureau of Statistics reports Average Weekly Earnings (AWE) for full-time adult ordinary time as $2,083.70 per week (May 2026). This is an average across all industries and states, not the median for any specific job. The all employees total earnings average is $1,579.20 per week, which includes part-time workers. These figures can help you benchmark your salary, but your actual pay depends on your award, enterprise agreement, or individual contract.
Important Disclaimer
Annual pay here is hourly rate × hours per week × 52. It assumes the same rate every week, no unpaid overtime, no penalty rates, no allowances, and no salary sacrifice. Super is estimated at 12% of ordinary earnings only, paid on top, and stops at the $270,830 maximum contribution base. Tax is the 2026–27 resident scale with the full tax-free threshold. Medicare uses the 2025–26 single reduction thresholds because the 2026–27 reduction thresholds were not confirmed here. HELP, the Medicare levy surcharge, and salary packaging are not deducted. This is an estimate, not a determination of your pay or tax.
