Salary Sacrifice Electric Vehicle and Your Hourly to Annual Pay: A Guide

For a 38-hour week, annual gross pay is hourly rate × 38 × 52, with super paid on top at 12%.

Understanding Hourly to Annual Pay

When you have an hourly rate or a salary offer, converting it to an annual figure helps you compare jobs and plan your budget. The standard formula is:

Annual gross pay ≈ hourly rate × hours per week × 52 weeks

We assume a 38-hour week, which is the full-time ordinary hours under the Fair Work Act. If you work different hours, adjust the multiplier accordingly. For example, a 20-hour week would use ×20 instead of ×38.

The Fortnightly View

Many Australians are paid fortnightly. To get your fortnightly gross pay, multiply your weekly pay by 2. For a 38-hour week at the National Minimum Wage:

  • Weekly: $26.44 × 38 = $1,004.72
  • Fortnightly: $1,004.72 × 2 = $2,009.44

This can help you match your pay cycle and budget for bills.

National Minimum Wage vs. Award Rates

The National Minimum Wage is the floor for employees not covered by an award or registered agreement. From 1 July 2026, it is $26.44 per hour, or $1,004.90 per week for 38 hours. Casual employees receive an extra 25% loading, making it $33.05 per hour.

Award rates are set by the Fair Work Commission for specific industries and occupations. They are often higher than the NMW and may include penalty rates for weekends, nights, or public holidays. Unlike the NMW, award rates are not a single figure—they vary by classification and experience. Our pay guides can help you find the correct award for your role.

Important: The figures above are averages or minimums, not a median for your specific job. For a personalised estimate, use our timesheet to enter your base rate and toggle casual loading.

Casual Loading and Superannuation

If you are a casual employee, your hourly rate should include the 25% casual loading. On our timesheet, check the box to add loading on top of your base rate. Never enter a rate that already includes casual loading—the tool will double it.

Superannuation is paid on top of your ordinary earnings at 12% (the super guarantee rate). For example, on a $26.44/hour rate, super adds $3.17 per hour, making the total cost to your employer $29.61. Super is capped at the maximum contribution base of $270,830 per year. Our super and packaging page explains how salary sacrifice affects your super.

Salary Sacrifice Electric Vehicle

A popular way to reduce taxable income is to salary sacrifice an electric vehicle (EV) through a novated lease. This arrangement deducts lease payments from your pre-tax salary, lowering your assessable income and tax. However, it also reduces the base for super guarantee contributions (since super is calculated on your reduced ordinary earnings).

When using our hourly-to-annual conversion, remember that the result is gross pay before salary sacrifice. If you plan to salary sacrifice an EV, you will need to estimate the lease cost and subtract it from your gross pay to get a more accurate take-home figure. Our take-home pay guide can help you estimate net pay after tax and Medicare, but it does not include salary sacrifice adjustments.

Example: NMW with Salary Sacrifice EV

Assume you earn the National Minimum Wage ($26.44/hour, 38 hours/week, annual $52,245.44). If you salary sacrifice $10,000 per year for an EV lease, your taxable income drops to $42,245.44. Your tax (using 2026–27 rates) would be lower, but your super guarantee (12% of $42,245.44 = $5,069.45) is also lower than if you had not sacrificed. Always consult a tax professional before entering a salary sacrifice arrangement.

Tax and Medicare

Our calculator uses the 2026–27 resident tax rates:

  • $0–$18,200: nil
  • $18,201–$45,000: 15%
  • $45,001–$135,000: 30%
  • $135,001–$190,000: 37%
  • Over $190,000: 45%

Medicare levy is generally 2% of taxable income. We use the 2025–26 single reduction thresholds because the 2026–27 thresholds were not confirmed. The levy may be reduced for low-income earners.

Disclaimer: Annual pay here is hourly rate × hours per week × 52. It assumes the same rate every week, no unpaid overtime, no penalty rates, no allowances, and no salary sacrifice. Super is estimated at 12% of ordinary earnings only, paid on top, and stops at the $270,830 maximum contribution base. Tax is the 2026–27 resident scale with the full tax-free threshold. Medicare uses the 2025–26 single reduction thresholds because the 2026–27 reduction thresholds were not confirmed here. HELP, the Medicare levy surcharge, and salary packaging are not deducted. This is an estimate, not a determination of your pay or tax.

Using Our Timesheet

Our timesheet lets you enter your base hourly rate and toggle casual loading. The result shows annual, monthly, fortnightly, and weekly gross pay, plus estimated tax, Medicare, and super. It is designed for quick comparisons, not for payroll.

For more detailed information, visit our reference tables for tax and super rates, or read about average pay from the Australian Bureau of Statistics. The ABS Average Weekly Earnings (May 2026) for full-time adult ordinary time is $2,083.70 per week, but this is an average across all industries, not a median for your job.

Open the same rate on the home timesheet. Read the reference tables before treating a figure as your pay.

Questions people ask next

What is the difference between the National Minimum Wage and an award rate?

The National Minimum Wage ($26.44/hour from 1 July 2026) is the minimum for employees not covered by an award or agreement. Award rates are industry- or occupation-specific minimums set by the Fair Work Commission, often higher than the NMW. They may include penalty rates, allowances, and casual loading. Always check your award via the Fair Work Ombudsman.

How does salary sacrifice electric vehicle affect my pay calculation?

Salary sacrifice for an electric vehicle reduces your taxable income because the lease payments come from pre-tax dollars. This can lower your tax and Medicare levy, but it also reduces your super guarantee base (since super is calculated on ordinary earnings after sacrifice). Our calculator does not include salary sacrifice; you should adjust your hourly rate or use the take-home pay estimate as a starting point.

What is casual loading and how is it applied?

Casual loading is an extra 25% paid on top of the base hourly rate to compensate for lack of paid leave. For the National Minimum Wage, the casual rate is $33.05/hour. When using our timesheet, check the 'casual loading' box to add 25% to your entered base rate. Do not enter a rate that already includes loading.
