Using a Salary Sacrifice Form to Understand Your Hourly to Annual Pay
For a full-time employee working 38 hours per week, annual gross pay is your hourly rate multiplied by 38 and then by 52 weeks.
Understanding Your Hourly to Annual Pay
When you have an hourly rate or a salary offer, converting it to an annual figure helps you compare jobs, plan a budget, or fill out a salary sacrifice form. The standard formula is simple: multiply your hourly rate by the number of hours you work each week, then by 52 weeks in a year. For full-time employees, we assume a 38-hour week, which is the ordinary hours under the Fair Work Act. This gives you a gross annual salary before tax, Medicare, and super.
The 38-Hour Week and the Fortnight
Most full-time roles in Australia are based on a 38-hour week. To find your weekly pay: hourly rate × 38. For a fortnight (which many employers use for pay cycles), multiply that weekly amount by 2. For example, if your hourly rate is $30.00, your weekly pay is $1,140.00 and your fortnightly pay is $2,280.00. The annual figure is $30.00 × 38 × 52 = $59,280.00. This assumes you work the same hours every week with no unpaid overtime, penalty rates, or allowances.
National Minimum Wage, Award Rates, and Casual Loading
Australia has a National Minimum Wage set by the Fair Work Commission. From 1 July 2026, it is $26.44 per hour for a full-time adult employee, or $1,004.90 per week for 38 hours. Many employees are covered by an award or registered agreement that sets a higher minimum rate for their industry or job. Casual employees receive a 25% loading on top of the minimum or award rate – for the National Minimum Wage, that is $33.05 per hour. When you use the timesheet, you can check a box to add 25% casual loading to your base hourly rate. Never type a rate that already includes casual loading; the calculator adds it for you.
Superannuation Is Paid on Top
Your employer must pay superannuation guarantee contributions of 12% of your ordinary earnings (from 1 July 2026). This is paid on top of your salary, not deducted from it. The maximum contribution base is $270,830 per year. For example, on a $59,280 annual salary, the super contribution would be $7,113.60 (12% of $59,280). The annual pay estimate on this site shows your gross salary and the estimated super separately. If you are considering a salary sacrifice form, you can redirect some of your pre-tax salary into super, which reduces your taxable income but does not change the gross hourly rate used in this calculation.
Tax and Medicare
The Australian Taxation Office uses a progressive tax scale for residents in 2026–27: no tax on the first $18,200, then 15% on income up to $45,000, 30% up to $135,000, 37% up to $190,000, and 45% above that. The Medicare levy is generally 2% of your taxable income. The take-home pay estimate on this site applies these rates using the full tax-free threshold and the 2025–26 single reduction thresholds for Medicare (because the 2026–27 reduction thresholds were not confirmed here). It does not deduct HELP repayments, the Medicare levy surcharge, or salary packaging. For a precise figure, consult your employer or a tax professional.
Using the Reference Tables
If you want to see how your pay compares with averages, the reference tables include the Australian Bureau of Statistics’ Average Weekly Earnings. For May 2026, full-time adult ordinary time earnings were $2,083.70 per week, and total earnings for all employees (including part-time) were $1,579.20 per week. These are averages across industries and states, not a median for your specific job. For job-specific pay, check the pay guides or job pay pages.
The Fortnightly View
Many people find it easier to budget fortnightly. Your fortnightly gross pay is simply your weekly pay multiplied by two. For a 38-hour week at $26.44 per hour (National Minimum Wage), weekly pay is $1,004.90 and fortnightly is $2,009.80. This is useful when you are filling out a salary sacrifice form because some benefits are deducted per pay period. The annual figure remains hourly × 38 × 52.
Important Disclaimer
Annual pay here is hourly rate × hours per week × 52. It assumes the same rate every week, no unpaid overtime, no penalty rates, no allowances, and no salary sacrifice. Super is estimated at 12% of ordinary earnings only, paid on top, and stops at the $270,830 maximum contribution base. Tax is the 2026–27 resident scale with the full tax-free threshold. Medicare uses the 2025–26 single reduction thresholds because the 2026–27 reduction thresholds were not confirmed here. HELP, the Medicare levy surcharge, and salary packaging are not deducted. This is an estimate, not a determination of your pay or tax.
