Salary Sacrifice into Super Calculator: Convert Your Hourly Rate to Annual Pay
For a full-time employee working 38 hours per week, annual gross pay is hourly rate × 38 × 52, with super paid on top.
Converting Your Hourly Rate to Annual Pay
Whether you're negotiating a salary, comparing job offers, or planning your budget, converting your hourly rate to an annual figure is a key step. The basic formula is simple: hourly rate × hours per week × 52 weeks. For most full-time employees, the standard week is 38 hours, as defined by the Fair Work Ombudsman. If you work a different pattern, you can adjust the hours accordingly.
For example, if you earn $30 per hour and work 38 hours a week, your annual gross pay is:
$30 × 38 × 52 = $59,280
This figure is before tax, super, and any other deductions. It also assumes you work the same hours every week, with no unpaid overtime, penalty rates, or allowances.
The Fortnightly View
Many Australians are paid fortnightly. To find your fortnightly gross pay, simply multiply your weekly pay by 2. Using the example above:
Weekly pay: $30 × 38 = $1,140 Fortnightly pay: $1,140 × 2 = $2,280
This can help you compare with salary offers that are quoted per fortnight or per year.
National Minimum Wage vs Award Rates
The National Minimum Wage (NMW) is set by the Fair Work Commission. From 1 July 2026, it is $26.44 per hour, or $1,004.90 per week for 38 hours. Casual employees receive a 25% loading, making it $33.05 per hour. However, the NMW is a floor – most employees are covered by an award or enterprise agreement that sets higher minimum rates for their industry or role.
It's important to check the correct award rate for your job. The minimum wage page on our site lists current rates, but these are averages or industry benchmarks, not a median for your specific job. Always refer to your award or agreement for the exact rate.
Casual Loading and Super
Casual employees get a 25% loading on top of the base hourly rate to compensate for not receiving paid leave. When using our calculator, you can check a box to add 25% casual loading. Do not enter a rate that already includes casual loading – the calculator adds it for you.
Superannuation is paid on top of your gross pay. The super guarantee is 12% of your ordinary time earnings, up to the maximum contribution base of $270,830 per year. For example, if your annual gross is $59,280, your employer must contribute an extra $7,113.60 to your super fund. This is not deducted from your pay.
Tax and Medicare
Your take-home pay depends on tax and the Medicare levy. For the 2026–27 income year, the resident tax rates are:
- $0 – $18,200: nil
- $18,201 – $45,000: 15% of excess over $18,200
- $45,001 – $135,000: $4,020 + 30% of excess over $45,000
- $135,001 – $190,000: $31,020 + 37% of excess over $135,000
- $190,001+: $51,370 + 45% of excess over $190,000
The Medicare levy is generally 2% of your taxable income. Our calculator uses the 2025–26 single reduction thresholds because the 2026–27 thresholds were not confirmed at the time of this guide. This is an estimate only.
Using the Salary Sacrifice into Super Calculator
One powerful feature of our tool is the salary sacrifice into super calculator. Salary sacrifice involves asking your employer to contribute some of your pre-tax pay into your super fund. This reduces your taxable income, so you pay less tax. However, your take-home pay decreases because the sacrificed amount goes into super.
Our calculator lets you enter your hourly rate, hours per week, and the amount you want to salary sacrifice into super. It then shows your new annual gross, taxable income, tax, Medicare, super contributions, and fortnightly take-home pay. This helps you decide whether salary sacrifice is right for you.
For more details on super and packaging, see our super and packaging page. You can also explore average pay data from the Australian Bureau of Statistics. The ABS Average Weekly Earnings for May 2026 show full-time adult ordinary time earnings of $2,083.70 per week, and all employees total earnings of $1,579.20 per week (including part-time). These are averages, not medians for your job.
Important Notes and Limitations
- The annual pay shown is an estimate based on your hourly rate × hours per week × 52. It assumes the same rate every week, no unpaid overtime, no penalty rates, no allowances, and no salary sacrifice (unless you use that feature).
- Super is estimated at 12% of ordinary earnings only, paid on top, and stops at the $270,830 maximum contribution base.
- Tax uses the 2026–27 resident scale with the full tax-free threshold. Medicare uses the 2025–26 single reduction thresholds because the 2026–27 thresholds were not confirmed here.
- HELP, the Medicare levy surcharge, and salary packaging (other than super) are not deducted.
- This is an estimate, not a determination of your pay or tax. Always consult a qualified professional for personal advice.
