Convert Your Hourly Rate to Annual Pay with Casual Loading and Super – Plus Salary Sacrifice Novated Lease Options

For a full-time employee on the National Minimum Wage of $26.44 per hour, working 38 hours a week, the annual gross pay is approximately $52,261 before casual loading, super, or tax.

Converting Hourly to Annual Pay: The Basics

If you earn an hourly wage or have received a salary offer, understanding your annual equivalent is essential for budgeting, comparing jobs, and planning your finances. The standard formula is simple: hourly rate × hours per week × 52 weeks. For full-time employees, we assume a 38-hour week, as set by the Fair Work Commission for the National Minimum Wage. If you work part-time or different hours, adjust the weekly hours accordingly. Your fortnightly pay is simply your weekly pay multiplied by two – a useful figure for many household budgets.

For example, the National Minimum Wage from 1 July 2026 is $26.44 per hour. Working 38 hours a week, your annual gross pay would be:

$26.44 × 38 × 52 = $52,261 (rounded).

This figure is before any casual loading, superannuation, or tax. It also assumes the same rate every week with no unpaid overtime, penalty rates, or allowances.

Casual Loading and Super Paid on Top

Many employees are casual workers, entitled to a 25% casual loading on top of their base rate. This loading compensates for not receiving paid sick leave or annual leave. The Fair Work Ombudsman provides award-specific rates, but the National Minimum Wage casual rate is $33.05 per hour ($26.44 × 1.25). When using our the timesheet, you enter your base hourly rate and tick the casual loading checkbox – never enter a rate that already includes the loading.

Superannuation is an additional cost for employers. The super guarantee is 12% of your ordinary earnings, paid on top of your gross pay. For a casual on $33.05 per hour, super is calculated on that loaded rate. The Australian Taxation Office sets the maximum contribution base at $270,830 for 2026–27. So if your annual ordinary earnings exceed that, super stops on the excess.

Tax, Medicare, and Salary Sacrifice Novated Lease

Your take-home pay depends on tax and the Medicare levy. For the 2026–27 income year, the resident tax rates are:

  • $0 – $18,200: nil
  • $18,201 – $45,000: 15% on excess over $18,200
  • $45,001 – $135,000: 30% on excess over $45,000
  • $135,001 – $190,000: 37% on excess over $135,000
  • Over $190,000: 45% on excess over $190,000

Medicare levy is generally 2% of taxable income. Our calculator uses the 2025–26 single reduction thresholds as the 2026–27 figures were not confirmed at the time of preparation. For a more detailed breakdown, see our take-home pay page.

One way to reduce your taxable income is through a salary sacrifice novated lease. This arrangement allows you to use pre-tax dollars to pay for a car and its running costs, lowering your assessable income. It is particularly relevant if you are comparing an hourly wage to a salary offer – a salary package may include novated lease options. Our super and packaging page explains how salary sacrifice interacts with super contributions.

Average Earnings Context

The Australian Bureau of Statistics (ABS) publishes Average Weekly Earnings. As of May 2026, full-time adult ordinary time earnings were $2,083.70 per week, while all employees (including part-time) averaged $1,579.20 per week. These are averages across all industries and states, not medians for a specific job. For a more tailored comparison, refer to average pay data or award rates from the Fair Work Ombudsman.

Important Limitations

Our annual pay estimate is exactly that – an estimate. It assumes a consistent 38-hour week, no unpaid overtime, no penalty rates or allowances, and no salary sacrifice. Super is estimated at 12% of ordinary earnings only, paid on top, and stops at the $270,830 maximum contribution base. Tax uses the 2026–27 resident scale with the full tax-free threshold. Medicare uses the 2025–26 single reduction thresholds because the 2026–27 reduction thresholds were not confirmed here. HELP, the Medicare levy surcharge, and salary packaging are not deducted. This is an estimate, not a determination of your pay or tax.

For award-specific rates, consult the pay guides on our site. And remember, if you are considering a salary sacrifice novated lease, factor in how it affects your taxable income and super contributions – it can be a valuable tool when negotiating your total remuneration.

Questions people ask next

How do I use the timesheet to calculate my annual pay?

On the home page, enter your base hourly rate. If you are a casual employee, check the box to add 25% casual loading on top. The calculator then multiplies your hourly rate by the hours per week (default 38) and by 52 weeks to give an annual gross figure. It also estimates fortnightly pay (weekly × 2), tax, Medicare, and super. Never enter a rate that already includes casual loading.

What is casual loading and how does it affect my pay?

Casual loading is an extra 25% paid on top of the base hourly rate to compensate for lack of paid leave and other entitlements. For example, the National Minimum Wage of $26.44 per hour becomes $33.05 per hour for casuals. This loading is applied before calculating super and tax. The Fair Work Ombudsman sets award rates that may include different loadings.

How is superannuation calculated on my pay?

Super guarantee is 12% of your ordinary earnings, paid on top of your gross pay by your employer. It is not deducted from your hourly rate. The maximum earnings base for super in 2026–27 is $270,830. For casual employees, super is calculated on the loaded rate (including casual loading). The Australian Taxation Office oversees super obligations.
