Salary Tax Calculator: Convert Hourly Rate to Annual, Fortnightly & Take-Home Pay (2026–27)

Based on a 38-hour week and 52 weeks per year, your annual gross pay is your hourly rate multiplied by 1,976 hours.

Convert Your Hourly Rate to Annual, Fortnightly & Take-Home Pay

If you’re paid by the hour or considering a salary offer, our salary tax calculator helps you see the full picture: annual gross, fortnightly pay, tax withheld, and superannuation. This guide explains the assumptions and numbers behind the calculator so you can interpret your results with confidence.

The Basic Formula: Hourly × Hours × 52

Annual gross pay is simply your hourly rate multiplied by the number of hours you work each week, multiplied by 52 weeks. Because full-time work in Australia is commonly 38 hours per week (as defined by the Fair Work Ombudsman and the National Employment Standards), our calculator uses 38 hours as the default. If you work a different pattern, you can adjust the weekly hours in the formula.

  • Annual gross = hourly rate × hours per week × 52
  • Fortnightly gross = weekly gross × 2 (or hourly × 76)
  • Weekly gross = hourly × 38

For example, at the National Minimum Wage of $26.44 per hour (from 1 July 2026), annual gross is $26.44 × 38 × 52 = $52,245.44. Fortnightly gross is $2,009.80.

Minimum Wage, Award Rates & Casual Loading

Australia has multiple minimum pay rates. The National Minimum Wage ($26.44/hour) applies to employees not covered by an award or registered agreement. Most workers are covered by an industry or occupation award, which sets higher minimum rates. You can find the correct award using the pay guides from the Fair Work Ombudsman.

If you’re a casual employee, you are entitled to a 25% loading on top of the base rate. For the National Minimum Wage, that’s $33.05 per hour. Our calculator includes a checkbox to add casual loading automatically – never enter a rate that already includes loading.

Tax Withholding & Medicare Levy

The Australian Taxation Office provides a tax withheld calculator that employers use to deduct the correct amount from your pay. Our salary tax calculator applies the 2026–27 resident tax rates:

  • $0 – $18,200: nil
  • $18,201 – $45,000: 15% of excess over $18,200
  • $45,001 – $135,000: 30% of excess over $45,000
  • $135,001 – $190,000: 37% of excess over $135,000
  • $190,001+: 45% of excess over $190,000

Medicare levy is generally 2% of taxable income. The calculator uses the 2025–26 single reduction thresholds (since the 2026–27 thresholds were not confirmed at the time of calculation). If you have a spouse, dependants, or a Medicare levy exemption, your actual withholding may differ.

Superannuation: Paid on Top

Super guarantee is 12% of your ordinary time earnings, paid by your employer on top of your gross pay. It does not come out of your take-home pay. The maximum contribution base for super is $270,830 per year (2026–27). Our calculator estimates super as 12% of annual gross, capped at that base.

Fortnightly Pay & Take-Home Amount

Many Australians are paid fortnightly. Your fortnightly gross is simply your weekly gross × 2. After tax and Medicare are deducted, you get your net (take-home) pay. The calculator shows both gross and net fortnightly amounts.

Important Assumptions & Limitations

This salary tax calculator is an estimate. It assumes:

  • You work the same number of hours every week (no unpaid overtime)
  • No penalty rates, allowances, or salary sacrifice
  • You are a resident for tax purposes and claim the tax-free threshold
  • No HELP, SSL, or Medicare levy surcharge deductions
  • Super is 12% of ordinary earnings, paid on top, up to the maximum contribution base

For a more precise calculation, use the ATO’s gross pay estimator or consult your employer’s payroll.

Using the Calculator

Enter your base hourly rate (without casual loading). If you’re casual, check the casual loading box. The calculator will show:

  • Annual gross pay
  • Fortnightly gross and net pay
  • Weekly gross pay
  • Estimated tax withheld
  • Estimated superannuation (paid on top)

You can also compare your rate to the minimum wage or see average pay benchmarks from the Australian Bureau of Statistics. For more on salary packaging, see super and packaging.

Why Use a Salary Tax Calculator?

Whether you’re negotiating a job offer, budgeting, or checking your pay, a salary tax calculator gives you a clear picture of your annual earnings and deductions. It helps you understand the difference between gross and net pay, and how super adds to your total compensation.

Remember: the figures here are estimates. Always refer to the pay guides from the Fair Work Ombudsman for your award rate, and the ATO’s tax tables for exact withholding. Our calculator is a starting point – not a substitute for professional advice.

Questions people ask next

How is annual salary calculated from an hourly rate?

Annual gross pay is your hourly rate multiplied by the number of hours you work each week, then multiplied by 52 weeks. Our salary tax calculator assumes a standard 38-hour week, so annual gross = hourly × 38 × 52. For example, the National Minimum Wage of $26.44 per hour gives $26.44 × 38 × 52 = $52,245.44 per year before tax and super. If you work different hours, adjust the weekly hours in the formula.

What is the difference between the National Minimum Wage and award rates?

The National Minimum Wage is the legal minimum for employees not covered by an award or agreement. From 1 July 2026 it is $26.44 per hour ($1,004.90 per week for 38 hours). Award rates are higher minimums set by the Fair Work Commission for specific industries or occupations. You can find the correct award rate using the [pay guides](/blog) from the Fair Work Ombudsman. Always check your award before using a salary tax calculator.

How does casual loading affect my pay and tax?

Casual employees are entitled to a 25% loading on top of the base hourly rate. For example, the casual National Minimum Wage is $33.05 per hour ($26.44 × 1.25). This loading compensates for not receiving paid leave. When using our salary tax calculator, enter your base hourly rate (without loading) and check the casual loading box – the calculator will add 25% automatically. The loading is part of your ordinary earnings for super and tax purposes.
