Smart Salary Packaging: Converting Hourly Rates to Annual Pay Under the National Minimum Wage and Awards
For a full-time employee working 38 hours per week, annual gross pay is hourly rate × 38 × 52, with superannuation paid on top.
Understanding Hourly to Annual Conversion
If you're paid by the hour or considering a salary offer, converting your hourly rate to an annual figure helps you compare jobs and plan your budget. Our the timesheet calculator does this instantly, but it helps to know the maths behind it.
The standard formula is: hourly rate × hours per week × 52 weeks. We assume a 38-hour week, which is the full-time ordinary hours under the National Employment Standards. For example, at the National Minimum Wage of $26.44 per hour, annual gross pay is $26.44 × 38 × 52 = $52,245.44.
A fortnightly figure is simply weekly pay × 2. For the same rate, weekly pay is $1,004.72, so fortnightly is $2,009.44. This can be useful for budgeting if you're paid fortnightly.
National Minimum Wage vs Award Rates
The National Minimum Wage from 1 July 2026 is $26.44 per hour ($1,004.90 per week for 38 hours). This is the base rate for award/agreement-free employees. However, most Australian workers are covered by an award or enterprise agreement that sets higher minimum rates.
Award rates vary by industry and classification. The Fair Work Ombudsman provides pay guides for each award, listing minimum pay rates, allowances, and penalty rates. Always check the correct award for your job before relying on the National Minimum Wage.
Casual Loading
Casual employees receive a 25% loading on top of the minimum hourly rate. For the National Minimum Wage, that's $33.05 per hour. Our calculator includes a checkbox to add casual loading automatically. Never enter a rate that already includes casual loading – enter your base rate and let the tool add the loading.
Smart Salary Packaging
Smart salary packaging (also called salary sacrifice) is an arrangement where you forgo part of your salary in exchange for benefits like a car, laptop, or additional super contributions. This reduces your taxable income, potentially lowering your tax bill. The Fair Work Ombudsman explains that some awards allow annualised wages to cover entitlements like penalties and allowances, but salary packaging is a separate contractual arrangement.
Our calculator does not deduct salary packaging. It shows your gross annual pay based on the hourly rate, then estimates tax and super. If you use salary packaging, your take-home pay will differ. For more details, see super and packaging.
Tax and Superannuation
Tax is calculated using the 2026–27 resident rates:
- Nil on the first $18,200
- 15% on income from $18,201 to $45,000
- 30% on income from $45,001 to $135,000
- 37% on income from $135,001 to $190,000
- 45% on income over $190,000
Medicare levy is generally 2% of taxable income. The calculator uses the 2025–26 single reduction thresholds (not yet confirmed for 2026–27).
Superannuation guarantee is 12% of ordinary earnings, paid on top of your salary. It does not reduce your take-home pay. The maximum contribution base is $270,830 per year. For example, on $52,245 annual pay, super is $6,269.40, bringing total employment cost to $58,514.84.
Using the Calculator
Our the timesheet tool lets you enter your hourly rate, choose casual loading if applicable, and instantly see annual, monthly, fortnightly, and weekly pay. It also shows estimated tax and super. For more resources, explore pay guides, minimum wage, take-home pay, and casual loading.
Remember: this is an estimate. It assumes the same rate every week, no unpaid overtime, no penalty rates, no allowances, and no salary sacrifice. Always check your award or agreement for exact entitlements.
