Hourly to Annual Pay: Casual Loading, Super, and Tesla Model X Salary Sacrifice Explained

For a full-time 38-hour week, annual gross pay is hourly rate × 38 × 52, with super paid on top.

Understanding the Hourly to Annual Conversion

When you have an hourly rate or a salary offer, the first step is to convert it to an annual figure. The standard formula is:

Annual gross pay = hourly rate × hours per week × 52

For a full-time employee working 38 hours each week, this becomes:

Annual gross pay = hourly rate × 38 × 52 (i.e., hourly × 1,976.

This calculation assumes the same rate every week, with no unpaid overtime, penalty rates, allowances, or salary sacrifice. It gives you a baseline estimate for budgeting, comparing offers, or understanding your pay.

The Fortnightly View

If you prefer a fortnightly figure, simply multiply your weekly pay by 2. For a 38-hour week, weekly pay is hourly × 38, so fortnightly is hourly × 76. This can help when comparing to salary packages that quote fortnightly amounts.

Casual Loading and Super Paid on Top

Casual Loading

Casual employees receive a 25% loading on top of their base hourly rate. This loading compensates for not receiving paid sick leave or annual leave. The Fair Work Commission sets the National Minimum Wage, which from 1 July 2026 is $26.44 per hour for permanent employees. For casuals, the rate is $33.05 per hour (including the 25% loading).

When using our timesheet calculator, you can check a box to add 25% casual loading on top of your base rate. Do not enter a rate that already includes the loading – the calculator applies it for you.

Super Guarantee

Superannuation is paid on top of your ordinary earnings. From 1 July 2026, the super guarantee rate is 12% of your ordinary time earnings, up to the maximum contribution base of $270,830 per year. Super is calculated on your total ordinary earnings, including any casual loading. It is not deducted from your pay – your employer pays it separately into your super fund.

Award Rates and Industry Averages

Many employees are covered by awards that set minimum pay rates above the National Minimum Wage. Award rates vary by industry and classification. The Australian Bureau of Statistics publishes Average Weekly Earnings (AWE) data. For May 2026, full-time adult ordinary time earnings averaged $2,083.70 per week. This is an average across all industries and occupations, not a median for any specific job. All employees (including part-time) averaged $1,579.20 per week.

Tesla Model X Salary Sacrifice Considerations

Salary sacrifice (or salary packaging) allows you to pay for certain items, such as a car, from your pre-tax income. If you are considering a Tesla Model X salary sacrifice arrangement, it is important to understand how it interacts with the annual pay calculation.

Our calculator assumes no salary sacrifice. Your annual gross pay is based on your hourly rate and hours worked. If you salary sacrifice part of your income, your taxable income reduces, which may lower your tax. However, the super guarantee is still calculated on your ordinary earnings (the amount before salary sacrifice). The maximum contribution base for super also applies.

For example, if you earn $80,000 per year and salary sacrifice $15,000 for a Tesla Model X, your taxable income becomes $65,000. But your employer still pays super on the $80,000 ordinary earnings (up to the cap). The calculator does not account for this, so you should consult a tax professional or use the ATO's resources for salary packaging.

Tax and Medicare

Resident tax rates for 2026–27 are:

  • Nil up to $18,200
  • 15% on income between $18,201 and $45,000
  • 30% on income between $45,001 and $135,000
  • 37% on income between $135,001 and $190,000
  • 45% on income over $190,000

Medicare levy is generally 2% of taxable income. The 2025–26 single reduction thresholds are used here because the 2026–27 thresholds were not confirmed in this estimate. HELP repayments, the Medicare levy surcharge, and salary packaging are not deducted in this estimate.

Important Disclaimer

Annual pay here is hourly rate × hours per week × 52. It assumes the same rate every week, no unpaid overtime, no penalty rates, no allowances, and no salary sacrifice. Super is estimated at 12% of ordinary earnings only, paid on top, and stops at the $270,830 maximum contribution base. Tax is the 2026–27 resident scale with the full tax-free threshold. Medicare uses the 2025–26 single reduction thresholds because the 2026–27 reduction thresholds were not confirmed here. HELP, the Medicare levy surcharge, and salary packaging are not deducted. This is an estimate, not a determination of your pay or tax.

Questions people ask next

What is the formula to convert hourly to annual?

Multiply your hourly rate by the number of hours you work each week, then by 52 weeks. For a standard full-time week of 38 hours, the formula is: annual gross = hourly × 38 × 52. This gives you a base figure before tax, super, or any deductions.

How does casual loading affect my pay?

Casual loading is an extra 25% paid on top of your base hourly rate to compensate for not receiving paid leave. For example, if the National Minimum Wage is $26.44 per hour, a casual employee would receive $33.05 per hour. Super is calculated on the total ordinary earnings, including the loading.

Can I use this calculator for salary sacrifice like a Tesla Model X?

No, the calculator assumes no salary sacrifice or packaging. If you enter a salary sacrifice arrangement, such as for a Tesla Model X, your taxable income may be lower, but the super guarantee still applies to your ordinary earnings. Consult a tax professional for personalised advice.
