From Hourly to Annual: Understanding Your Pay, Tax, Super, and Toyota Salary Sacrifice

Annual gross pay is your hourly rate times hours per week times 52; for a 38-hour week, multiply by 1976 hours.

Converting Your Hourly Rate to Annual Pay

If you’re paid by the hour or considering a salary offer, the first step is to work out your annual gross pay. The standard formula is simple: hourly rate × hours per week × 52 weeks. For a full-time employee working 38 hours a week (the standard under the Fair Work Act), that’s 1976 hours a year. For example, at the National Minimum Wage of $26.44 per hour, your annual gross would be $26.44 × 38 × 52 = $52,261.44.

But your actual pay may differ if you work more or fewer hours, or if you have a casual loading. The the timesheet on this site lets you enter your base hourly rate and optionally add 25% casual loading on top. Never enter a rate that already includes casual loading – the checkbox adds it for you.

Fortnightly Pay and the 52-Week Year

Many Australian employers pay fortnightly. To find your fortnightly gross, multiply your weekly pay by 2. Using the minimum wage example: weekly pay is $26.44 × 38 = $1,004.72, so fortnightly is $2,009.44. This helps when comparing salary offers or budgeting.

Tax and Medicare Levy

Once you have your annual gross, you can estimate your take-home pay using the 2026–27 resident tax rates:

  • Nil tax on the first $18,200
  • 15% on income between $18,201 and $45,000
  • 30% on income between $45,001 and $135,000
  • 37% on income between $135,001 and $190,000
  • 45% on income above $190,000

Plus a 2% Medicare levy (based on 2025–26 single reduction thresholds as 2026–27 thresholds are not confirmed here). The take-home pay page explains this in more detail.

Super Guarantee Paid on Top

Your employer must pay super guarantee at 12% of your ordinary earnings, on top of your gross pay. This is not deducted from your hourly rate. For example, if your annual gross is $60,000, your employer adds $7,200 in super, up to the maximum contribution base of $270,830. The super and packaging page covers how salary sacrifice arrangements, such as a Toyota salary sacrifice plan, can reduce your taxable income and affect your super contributions.

Minimum Wage, Award Rates, and Casual Loading

The National Minimum Wage from 1 July 2026 is $26.44 per hour ($1,004.90 per week for 38 hours). Casual employees get a 25% loading, making it $33.05 per hour. However, many workers are covered by awards or enterprise agreements that set higher minimum rates. The minimum wage page has more details. The casual loading page explains how loading works.

Average Earnings and Job Pay

The Australian Bureau of Statistics reports average weekly earnings for full-time adult ordinary time at $2,083.70 (May 2026). All employees (including part-time) average $1,579.20 per week. These are averages, not medians for your specific job. For job-specific pay, see the job pay page.

Important Disclaimer

The annual pay estimate here is hourly rate × hours per week × 52. It assumes the same rate every week, no unpaid overtime, no penalty rates, no allowances, and no salary sacrifice. Super is estimated at 12% of ordinary earnings only, paid on top, and stops at the $270,830 maximum contribution base. Tax is the 2026–27 resident scale with the full tax-free threshold. Medicare uses the 2025–26 single reduction thresholds because the 2026–27 reduction thresholds were not confirmed here. HELP, the Medicare levy surcharge, and salary packaging are not deducted. This is an estimate, not a determination of your pay or tax.

Using the Timesheet and Reference Tables

To get started, use the timesheet to enter your base hourly rate. For more detailed pay guides and award rates, visit pay guides. The reference tables provide quick lookups for tax brackets and super caps. And if you want to understand how a Toyota salary sacrifice arrangement might change your numbers, the super and packaging page explains the trade-offs.

Remember: the formula gives you a gross annual figure. Your actual take-home will be lower after tax and Medicare, and your super is extra. Use the estimate as a starting point for negotiations or budgeting.

Open the same rate on the home timesheet. Read the reference tables before treating a figure as your pay.

Questions people ask next

How do I convert my hourly rate to an annual salary?

Multiply your hourly rate by the number of hours you work each week, then by 52. For a standard 38-hour week, the formula is: hourly rate × 38 × 52. This gives your gross annual pay before tax and super.

Does the estimate include Toyota salary sacrifice?

No. The annual pay estimate assumes no salary sacrifice arrangements. If you have a Toyota salary sacrifice agreement, your taxable pay is reduced, which lowers your tax but also affects super guarantee contributions. Use the estimate as a starting point and adjust for your specific package.

How is super calculated on top of my hourly rate?

Super guarantee is 12% of your ordinary earnings, paid on top of your gross pay. For example, if your annual gross is $60,000, your employer adds $7,200 in super, up to the maximum contribution base of $270,830. The estimate shows super separately.
