Train Driver Salary 2026: How to Convert Hourly Rates to Annual Pay

A qualified Sydney Trains driver earns $101,899 per year base pay ($1,959.60 per week with industry allowance), while a Metro Trains Melbourne qualified driver earns $135,657 per year, before shift penalties and overtime.

Understanding the Train Driver Salary in 2026

If you are looking at a train driver salary in Australia, the base rates are set by enterprise agreements, not modern awards. The two largest operators—Sydney Trains and Metro Trains Melbourne—publish their pay scales for 2026–27. This article shows how to convert those hourly or weekly rates into annual figures, and what to expect after tax and super.

The Conversion Formula: Hourly to Annual

To estimate an annual salary from an hourly rate, use the standard formula:

Annual gross = hourly rate × hours per week × 52

Most full-time train drivers work 38 ordinary hours per week, so we assume 38 hours unless stated otherwise. For example, a Metro Trains Melbourne qualified driver (SPOT) earns $68.65 per hour. Multiply by 38 hours and 52 weeks:

$68.65 × 38 × 52 = $135,657 per year

This matches the base annual salary published in the enterprise agreement.

Sydney Trains and Metro Trains Melbourne Base Rates

According to the 2026–27 enterprise agreements, base pay for train crew is as follows:

Sydney Trains (from 1 July 2026) – weekly rates include an industry allowance of about $98.25 per week.

Classification Weekly with allowance Per year
Driver Thereafter $1,959.60 $101,899
Driver Trainer $2,180.45 $113,383
Principal Driver $2,255.30 $117,276
Guard Thereafter $1,718.25 $89,349

Metro Trains Melbourne (from first pay period July 2026) – annual salary based on 1,976 hours (38 hours × 52 weeks).

Classification Hourly Per year
Trainee Driver $39.92 $78,880
Qualified Driver Level 1 $46.60 $92,077
Qualified Driver (SPOT) $68.65 $135,657
TSO (Principal Driver) $84.70 $167,361

These are base rates. Train crew work rotating rosters, so shift penalties, weekend rates, and overtime usually add a lot to actual earnings.

Fortnightly Pay and Take-Home

A fortnight is two weeks. For a Sydney Trains driver on $1,959.60 per week, the gross fortnight is $3,919.20. After income tax (2026–27 resident rates) and the Medicare levy (2%), the estimated take-home is about $3,030 per fortnight. Super is paid on top of the base rate at 12% of ordinary earnings, up to the $270,830 maximum contribution base.

How Train Driver Pay Compares to Award Rates

The National Minimum Wage from 1 July 2026 is $26.44 per hour ($1,004.90 per week for 38 hours). Casual employees get 25% loading, making it $33.05 per hour. Train drivers earn well above the minimum. The Road Transport and Distribution Award 2020 sets minimum rates for transport workers, but train drivers are covered by enterprise agreements that typically pay more.

For example, a Transport Worker Grade 10 under the award earns $34.25 per hour (from 1 July 2026). A qualified train driver earns $68.65 per hour—double the award rate. This reflects the specialised skills, safety responsibilities, and irregular hours of train crew.

Superannuation and Other Benefits

Super guarantee is 12% of ordinary earnings, paid on top of the base salary. For a Metro driver on $135,657, the employer contributes about $16,279 per year to super. This is not included in the annual salary figure but is an important part of total remuneration. See our super and packaging guide for more.

Using the Hourly to Annual Conversion for Your Own Pay

If you have an hourly rate or a salary offer, you can convert it using the same formula. Our hourly conversion tool helps you see the annual equivalent. Remember:

  • Assume 38 hours per week unless your contract says otherwise.
  • Casual loading (25%) is added on top of the base hourly rate—never include it in the rate you enter.
  • The formula gives gross annual pay before tax and super.
  • Actual take-home depends on tax, Medicare, and any salary sacrifice.

For award-covered employees, check the pay guides for your classification. The Fair Work Commission’s Modern Awards Pay Database provides official minimum rates, allowances, and penalty rates.

Important Disclaimer

Annual pay here is hourly rate × hours per week × 52. It assumes the same rate every week, no unpaid overtime, no penalty rates, no allowances, and no salary sacrifice. Super is estimated at 12% of ordinary earnings only, paid on top, and stops at the $270,830 maximum contribution base. Tax is the 2026–27 resident scale with the full tax-free threshold. Medicare uses the 2025–26 single reduction thresholds because the 2026–27 reduction thresholds were not confirmed here. HELP, the Medicare levy surcharge, and salary packaging are not deducted. This is an estimate, not a determination of your pay or tax.

Questions people ask next

How is a train driver salary calculated from hourly rates?

Annual salary is estimated by multiplying the hourly rate by hours per week (usually 38) then by 52 weeks. For example, a Metro Trains Melbourne qualified driver at $68.65 per hour × 38 hours × 52 weeks equals $135,657 per year. This assumes no unpaid overtime and no penalty rates. Enterprise agreements often include additional allowances and shift loadings that increase take-home pay.

Do train drivers get casual loading?

Train drivers are typically permanent employees under enterprise agreements, not casual. Casual loading (25% under the Road Transport Award) does not apply to permanent train crew. However, some train operators may employ casual drivers on different terms. Always check the specific enterprise agreement for your operator.

What is the take-home pay for a train driver after tax and super?

Take-home pay depends on the base rate, shift penalties, and overtime. For a Sydney Trains driver on $101,899 base, after tax (2026–27 rates) and Medicare levy, fortnightly take-home is about $3,030. Super is paid on top at 12% of ordinary earnings. Actual take-home varies with roster and deductions.
