VPS 4 Salary 2026: How to Convert Hourly Rates to Annual, Fortnightly, and After-Tax Pay

For a full-time employee working 38 hours per week, the annual salary is hourly rate × 38 × 52.

Understanding VPS 4 Salary 2026 and Hourly Conversion

If you're looking up VPS 4 salary 2026, you're likely comparing a Victorian public service role or a similar professional position. The exact VPS 4 rate depends on your enterprise agreement, but the principles of converting an hourly rate to annual, fortnightly, and after-tax pay are the same for any employee. This guide uses the latest figures from the Fair Work Commission and the Australian Taxation Office, and explains how casual loading and superannuation are paid on top.

The Basic Formula: Hourly × Hours per Week × 52

To estimate your annual gross salary, multiply your hourly rate by the number of hours you work each week, then by 52 weeks. For full-time employees, the standard is 38 hours per week, as set by the National Employment Standards. So:

Annual gross ≈ hourly rate × 38 × 52

For example, if your hourly rate is $40.00: $40.00 × 38 × 52 = $79,040 per year.

If you work part-time or irregular hours, adjust the weekly hours accordingly. Our hourly conversion tool can do the maths for you.

Fortnightly Pay

Most Australian employers pay fortnightly. To get your gross fortnightly pay, multiply your weekly pay by 2:

Fortnightly gross = (hourly rate × weekly hours) × 2

Using the same $40.00/hour example: Weekly = $40.00 × 38 = $1,520 Fortnightly = $1,520 × 2 = $3,040

National Minimum Wage and Award Rates

The Fair Work Commission sets the National Minimum Wage each year. From 1 July 2026, the national minimum wage is $26.44 per hour, or $1,004.90 per week for 38 hours. This is the minimum for award/agreement-free employees. Most employees are covered by a modern award or enterprise agreement that sets higher rates. The Fair Work Ombudsman publishes pay guides for each award with minimum rates, allowances, and penalty rates.

For VPS 4 salary 2026, the rate is typically above the national minimum wage. Check your enterprise agreement or the Victorian Government's wage schedule for the precise figure.

Casual Loading: 25% on Top

Casual employees receive a 25% loading on top of the base hourly rate to compensate for not receiving paid leave (sick leave, annual leave). The loading is applied before calculating superannuation. For example:

  • Base rate: $26.44/hour (National Minimum Wage)
  • Casual rate: $26.44 × 1.25 = $33.05/hour

If you are a casual employee, never enter a rate that already includes the loading into our timesheet – use the base rate and tick the casual loading checkbox. Our casual loading page explains more.

Superannuation: Paid on Top

Employers must pay superannuation on top of your gross earnings. From 1 July 2026, the super guarantee rate is 12% of your ordinary time earnings, up to the maximum contribution base of $270,830 per year. This means if your annual salary is $80,000, your employer contributes an extra $9,600 to your super fund. Super is not deducted from your pay; it is an additional cost to the employer.

Tax and Take-Home Pay

Australia uses a progressive tax system. For the 2026–27 income year, the resident tax rates are:

  • $0 – $18,200: Nil
  • $18,201 – $45,000: 15c for each $1 over $18,200
  • $45,001 – $135,000: $4,020 plus 30c for each $1 over $45,000
  • $135,001 – $190,000: $31,020 plus 37c for each $1 over $135,000
  • $190,001 and over: $51,420 plus 45c for each $1 over $190,000

Plus a Medicare levy of 2% (generally). The tax-free threshold and Medicare levy reduction thresholds apply. Use our take-home pay calculator to estimate your net pay after tax and Medicare.

Example: VPS 4 Salary 2026 Estimate

Suppose a VPS 4 role pays $45.00 per hour (a typical rate for a mid-level professional). Assuming 38 hours per week:

  • Annual gross: $45.00 × 38 × 52 = $88,920
  • Fortnightly gross: ($45.00 × 38) × 2 = $3,420
  • Super (12%): $10,670.40 paid on top
  • Estimated tax (2026–27): approximately $18,267 (including Medicare)
  • Estimated take-home: $70,653 per year

These figures are estimates. Your actual pay may differ due to allowances, penalty rates, or salary packaging. Always refer to your enterprise agreement for the exact VPS 4 salary 2026.

Using Our Reference Tables

Disclaimer

Annual pay here is hourly rate × hours per week × 52. It assumes the same rate every week, no unpaid overtime, no penalty rates, no allowances, and no salary sacrifice. Super is estimated at 12% of ordinary earnings only, paid on top, and stops at the $270,830 maximum contribution base. Tax is the 2026–27 resident scale with the full tax-free threshold. Medicare uses the 2025–26 single reduction thresholds because the 2026–27 reduction thresholds were not confirmed here. HELP, the Medicare levy surcharge, and salary packaging are not deducted. This is an estimate, not a determination of your pay or tax.

Open the same rate on the home timesheet. Read the reference tables before treating a figure as your pay.

Questions people ask next

What is the VPS 4 salary for 2026?

The VPS 4 classification is set by the Victorian Public Service enterprise agreement, not by Fair Work awards. The exact salary varies by grade and step. However, the conversion method on this page applies: multiply your hourly rate by 38 hours per week and 52 weeks to get an annual figure. For the official VPS 4 salary 2026 rates, refer to the Victorian Government's wages board or your enterprise agreement.

How is casual loading calculated?

Casual loading is an additional 25% paid on top of the base hourly rate to compensate for lack of paid leave. For example, if the base rate is $26.44 per hour (the 2026 National Minimum Wage), the casual rate is $33.05 per hour. Superannuation is then calculated on the casual rate. Our [casual loading](/topics/casual-loading) page has more details.

How much super is paid on top of my salary?

From 1 July 2026, the super guarantee is 12% of your ordinary earnings, paid on top of your gross pay. It applies up to the maximum contribution base of $270,830 per year. For example, if your annual salary is $80,000, your employer pays an extra $9,600 into your super fund. See our [super and packaging](/topics/super-and-packaging) page for more.
