Convert Your Hourly Rate to Annual Salary: VPS Salary and Casual Loading Explained
Annual salary is calculated as hourly rate × 38 hours per week × 52 weeks, with super paid on top and casual loading available as a checkbox option.
Understanding your hourly rate and annual salary
Whether you're negotiating a VPS salary or comparing a casual role, knowing how your hourly rate translates to annual pay is essential. The standard formula is simple: multiply your hourly rate by the hours you work each week, then by 52 weeks. For most full-time positions, we assume a 38‑hour week – the ordinary hours used by the Fair Work Commission and the Fair Work Ombudsman.
For example, if your hourly rate is $30.00:
- Weekly pay: $30.00 × 38 = $1,140.00
- Fortnightly pay: $1,140.00 × 2 = $2,280.00
- Annual gross pay: $30.00 × 38 × 52 = $59,280.00
This method works for any hourly rate, whether you're on a VPS salary agreement, an award, or the National Minimum Wage. Use the timesheet to run your own numbers.
National Minimum Wage and award rates
From 1 July 2026, the National Minimum Wage is $26.44 per hour, or $1,004.90 per week for 38 hours. This is the base rate for adult employees not covered by an award or agreement. Many employees, including those in the Victorian Public Service (VPS), are covered by enterprise agreements or awards that set higher rates. The Fair Work Ombudsman provides pay guides for each award, which include minimum pay rates, allowances, and penalty rates.
If you're comparing a VPS salary offer, remember that VPS rates are typically set by a collective agreement and may include annual salary increments. You can still use the hourly conversion to see how your offer stacks up against the minimum or against casual rates.
Casual loading and superannuation
Casual employees are entitled to a 25% loading on top of the minimum hourly rate. This compensates for not receiving paid leave. On our timesheet, you can check a box to add the 25% casual loading to your base rate. For example, the National Minimum Wage for casuals is $33.05 per hour ($26.44 × 1.25). Never enter a rate that already includes casual loading – the calculator applies it for you.
Superannuation is a separate obligation. From 1 July 2026, the Super Guarantee is 12% of your ordinary earnings, paid on top of your salary. It does not reduce your take-home pay. The maximum contribution base is $270,830 per year. For a VPS salary or any role, your employer must pay super in addition to your gross wage. Our estimate shows super as an extra amount, not deducted from your annual figure.
Tax and take-home pay
Your annual gross pay is not what you take home. The Australian Taxation Office applies progressive tax rates for 2026–27:
- $0 – $18,200: nil
- $18,201 – $45,000: 15% on the excess over $18,200
- $45,001 – $135,000: 30% on the excess over $45,000
- $135,001 – $190,000: 37% on the excess over $135,000
- Over $190,000: 45% on the excess over $190,000
Plus a Medicare levy of 2% (with reductions for low-income earners). Our take-home pay calculator uses these rates to estimate your net annual income. Note that HELP repayments, the Medicare levy surcharge, and salary packaging are not included.
How to use this timesheet
On the home page, enter your base hourly rate in the field. If you are a casual employee, tick the “Casual loading” checkbox – the calculator will add 25% on top. The results show:
- Weekly, fortnightly, and annual gross pay
- Estimated superannuation (12% of ordinary earnings)
- Estimated tax and Medicare levy
- Estimated take-home pay
All calculations assume a 38‑hour week unless you change the hours. For part-time or irregular hours, adjust the weekly hours to match your schedule. The formula remains: hourly × hours per week × 52.

VPS salary and other agreements
The term VPS salary refers to pay scales in the Victorian Public Service, which are set by enterprise agreements. These rates are often higher than the National Minimum Wage and include annual increments. While our timesheet uses a flat hourly rate, you can still enter your VPS hourly equivalent to see annual figures. For example, a VPS3 salary of $76,000 per year equates to roughly $38.46 per hour (based on 38 hours × 52 weeks).
Remember that enterprise agreements may also include allowances, penalty rates, and salary packaging options that our simple calculator does not capture. Always check your specific agreement or award for exact conditions.
Summary
Converting an hourly rate to annual salary is straightforward: hourly × hours per week × 52. For full-time work, we use 38 hours. Casual loading adds 25% on top. Super is paid in addition. Tax is progressive. Use the timesheet to estimate your pay, and consult the Fair Work Ombudsman and Fair Work Commission for official rates. Whether you're on a VPS salary or a casual award, this tool gives you a clear picture of your earnings.
