Understanding VPS Salary 2025: Hourly to Annual Conversion and Pay Essentials
For a VPS salary 2025, assuming a 38-hour week, the annual gross pay is the hourly rate multiplied by 38 hours per week times 52 weeks.
Understanding Your VPS Salary 2025
If you are looking at a Victorian Public Service (VPS) salary 2025, you may need to convert between annual and hourly rates. Most VPS roles are full-time with a 38-hour week, but part-time and casual positions use different calculations. This guide explains how to convert your pay, what the National Minimum Wage means for you, and how tax and superannuation affect your take-home pay.
The Basic Formula
The standard conversion for a full-time employee is:
Annual gross pay = hourly rate × hours per week × 52
For a 38-hour week, this becomes:
Annual gross = hourly rate × 38 × 52
For example, if your VPS salary 2025 is $75,000, your hourly rate is approximately $75,000 ÷ (38 × 52) = $37.96. Conversely, if you know your hourly rate, multiply by 38 and then by 52 to get the annual figure.
Fortnightly Pay
Many VPS employees are paid fortnightly. To find your gross fortnightly pay, multiply your weekly pay by 2. Using the example above, weekly pay is $75,000 ÷ 52 = $1,442.31, so fortnightly gross is $2,884.62. This is before tax and any salary sacrifice arrangements.
National Minimum Wage and Award Rates
The Fair Work Ombudsman sets the National Minimum Wage each year. From 1 July 2025, the rate is $24.95 per hour or $948 per week for a 38-hour week. This applies to employees not covered by an award or enterprise agreement. Most VPS roles are covered by the Victorian Public Service Enterprise Agreement or a specific award, which typically pay above the minimum. However, the National Minimum Wage serves as a floor.
For comparison, from 1 July 2026 the National Minimum Wage rises to $26.44 per hour ($1,004.90 per week) according to the on-site reference. When evaluating a VPS salary 2025 offer, check whether it exceeds the award rate for your classification.
Casual Loading
If you are a casual VPS employee, you are entitled to a 25% casual loading on top of the base hourly rate. This loading compensates for not receiving paid leave such as annual leave or sick leave. The loading is applied to the ordinary hourly rate before any penalty rates. For example, if the base rate is $30.00 per hour, the casual rate becomes $37.50 per hour. Use the casual loading page to calculate your correct rate.
Tax on Your VPS Salary 2025
The Australian Taxation Office applies a progressive tax scale for residents. For the 2026–27 financial year, the tax brackets are:
- Nil tax on income up to $18,200
- 15% on income from $18,201 to $45,000
- 30% on income from $45,001 to $135,000
- 37% on income from $135,001 to $190,000
- 45% on income above $190,000
Additionally, most residents pay a Medicare levy of 2% of taxable income. The Medicare levy surcharge applies if you do not have appropriate private hospital cover and your income exceeds a threshold, but that is not included in this estimate.
To estimate your take-home pay, use the take-home pay calculator. Remember that the tax withheld by your employer is based on your declared circumstances, so your actual refund or bill may differ.
Superannuation Guarantee
From 1 July 2025, the superannuation guarantee is 12% of your ordinary earnings. This is paid by your employer on top of your salary, not deducted from it. For a VPS salary 2025 of $75,000, the employer contributes an extra $9,000 per year to your super fund, up to the maximum contribution base of $270,830. Super is not included in your gross salary for tax purposes until you withdraw it. See super and packaging for more on salary sacrifice and contribution caps.
Comparing VPS Salaries to Average Earnings
The Australian Bureau of Statistics publishes Average Weekly Earnings. For May 2026, full-time adult ordinary time earnings were $2,083.70 per week. All employees total earnings (including part-time) averaged $1,579.20 per week. A VPS salary 2025 that falls below these averages may still be competitive depending on your classification and experience. Use the average pay page to see how your offer compares.
Important Notes on This Estimate
This conversion assumes you work the same number of hours every week, with no unpaid overtime, penalty rates, allowances, or salary sacrifice. Super is estimated at 12% of ordinary earnings only, paid on top, and stops at the $270,830 maximum contribution base. Tax uses the 2026–27 resident scale with the full tax-free threshold. Medicare uses the 2025–26 single reduction thresholds because the 2026–27 reduction thresholds were not confirmed here. HELP, the Medicare levy surcharge, and salary packaging are not deducted. This is an estimate, not a determination of your pay or tax.
Using the Timesheet
Our timesheet allows you to enter your base hourly rate and optionally add 25% casual loading. Do not enter a rate that already includes casual loading; use the checkbox to add it. The tool then calculates your annual gross, fortnightly pay, estimated tax, and super. It is designed for quick estimates based on a 38-hour week.
