How to Calculate a 6 Figure Salary: Hourly Rate, Fortnightly Pay, Tax and Super
For a 38-hour week, a 6 figure salary of $100,000 per year equates to an hourly rate of approximately $50.61 before tax and super.
Understanding the 6 Figure Salary
A 6 figure salary is any annual pay of $100,000 or more. For a full-time employee working a standard 38-hour week, the hourly rate needed is about $50.61 per hour. This guide explains the calculation, casual loading, super on top, tax, and superannuation using the latest Fair Work Ombudsman and Australian Taxation Office information.
The Basic Calculation: Hourly × Hours × 52
The formula is simple: hourly rate × hours per week × 52 weeks. We assume 38 hours per week as the standard full-time week under the National Employment Standards. For a 6 figure salary of $100,000, the hourly rate is $100,000 ÷ (38 × 52) = $50.61. This assumes the same rate every week, no unpaid overtime, no penalty rates, no allowances, and no salary sacrifice.
If you work more or fewer hours, adjust the hours per week. For example, a 40-hour week gives $48.08 per hour for $100,000. The hourly conversion tool on this site can help.
National Minimum Wage and Award Rates
The National Minimum Wage from 1 July 2026 is $26.44 per hour, or $1,004.90 per week for 38 hours. Many employees are covered by an award that sets higher minimum rates. The Fair Work Ombudsman publishes pay guides that list minimum pay rates, allowances, and penalty rates for each award. These guides are the authoritative source for your minimum entitlement. If you are on a 6 figure salary, you are well above the minimum, but your award may still affect overtime and penalty rates.
Casual Loading and Super on Top
Casual employees receive a 25% loading on top of their base hourly rate to compensate for lack of paid leave. The base rate is the award or minimum rate. For a 6 figure salary, the base rate of $50.61 becomes $63.26 per hour with casual loading. The [casual loading page explains the details. The loading is not included in the salary figure.
Superannuation is paid on top of ordinary earnings. From 1 July 2026, employers must pay super each payday under the Payday Super rules. The super guarantee is 12% of ordinary earnings, up to the maximum contribution base of $270,830. For a $100,000 salary, super is $12,000 per year on top. This is not deducted from your pay; it is an additional cost to the employer. The super and packaging page has more detail.
Tax and Medicare
For the 2026–27 financial year, the resident tax rates are:
- Nil on the first $18,200
- 15% on the next $26,800 (to $45,000)
- 30% on the next $90,000 (to $135,000)
- 37% on the next $55,000 (to $190,000)
- 45% above $190,000
Medicare levy is generally 2% of taxable income. For a $100,000 salary, tax is approximately $24,967 and Medicare $2,000, total $26,967. This estimate uses the 2025–26 Medicare reduction thresholds because the 2026–27 thresholds were not confirmed. HELP, Medicare levy surcharge, and salary packaging are not included.
Fortnightly Pay
Fortnightly pay is weekly pay multiplied by 2. Weekly pay is annual salary divided by 52. For $100,000, weekly is $1,923.08, fortnightly is $3,846.15. For an hourly rate of $50.61, weekly is $1,923.18, fortnightly $3,846.36. This helps with budgeting.
Annualised Wages and Salary Offsetting
Some awards and enterprise agreements allow annualised wages where a fixed amount covers minimum pay, penalties, overtime, allowances, and annual leave loading. The Fair Work Ombudsman explains that an annualised wage must not be less than what the employee would have received under the award. Employers must review the arrangement every 12 months and pay any shortfall. Salary offsetting in an employment contract can also cover entitlements, but the employer must still pay in full each period and at least monthly. These arrangements are common for 6 figure salaries to simplify payroll.
Using the Timesheet
Our timesheet lets you enter a base hourly rate and optionally add 25% casual loading. It calculates annual, weekly, fortnightly, monthly pay, tax, Medicare, and super. Never enter a rate that already includes casual loading; use the checkbox instead. The results are estimates based on the assumptions above.
Summary
A 6 figure salary of $100,000 per year requires about $50.61 per hour for a 38-hour week. Casual loading adds 25% on top of the base rate. Super is 12% on top of ordinary earnings. Tax and Medicare reduce take-home pay. Use the pay guides for your award, the minimum wage page for current rates, and the take-home pay page for net estimates. Always check with the Fair Work Ombudsman and the Australian Taxation Office for your specific situation.
Open the same rate on the home timesheet. Read the reference tables before treating a figure as your pay.
