How to Calculate Your AI Engineer Salary: Hourly to Annual Conversion

For an AI engineer earning $80 per hour, the annual gross pay is $80 × 38 hours × 52 weeks = $158,080 before tax and super, assuming full-time hours.

Converting an AI Engineer Salary from Hourly to Annual

If you are an AI engineer negotiating a contract or comparing job offers, you will often see an hourly rate. To understand your full-year earnings, you need to convert that hourly rate to an annual figure. The standard formula is straightforward: multiply your hourly rate by the number of hours you work per week, then multiply by 52 weeks.

For most full-time employees in Australia, the ordinary hours of work are 38 per week, as set by the Fair Work Act. This is the basis for the National Minimum Wage and most modern awards. Therefore, when converting an AI engineer salary, we assume 38 hours per week unless your award or agreement states otherwise.

The Formula

Annual gross pay = hourly rate × hours per week × 52

For example, an AI engineer on $80 per hour working 38 hours per week would earn:

$80 × 38 × 52 = $158,080 per year before tax and super.

If you are paid fortnightly, your gross pay each fortnight is simply your weekly pay multiplied by 2. Using the same example, weekly pay is $3,040, so fortnightly pay is $6,080.

National Minimum Wage and Award Rates

The Fair Work Commission sets the National Minimum Wage each year. From 1 July 2026, the rate is $26.44 per hour, or $1,004.90 per week for 38 hours. This is the minimum that can be paid to an adult employee not covered by an award or agreement. Most AI engineers, however, will be covered by a modern award (such as the Professional Employees Award) or an enterprise agreement, which typically set higher minimum rates. The Fair Work Ombudsman provides pay guides for each award.

Award rates are reviewed annually. In the 2025 Annual Wage Review, the Fair Work Commission increased all modern award minimum wage rates by 3.5%. This ensures that real wages keep pace with the cost of living. When checking your AI engineer salary, always confirm which award applies and what the current minimum rate is for your classification.

Casual Loading

If you are employed as a casual AI engineer, you are entitled to a casual loading of 25% on top of the base hourly rate. This compensates for not receiving paid leave entitlements such as annual leave and sick leave. The loading is applied to the minimum award rate or the National Minimum Wage. For example, the casual National Minimum Wage from 1 July 2026 is $33.05 per hour ($26.44 × 1.25).

When using our timesheet, you can check a box to add 25% casual loading to your base hourly rate. Do not enter a rate that already includes casual loading; the tool calculates it for you.

Superannuation

Superannuation is paid on top of your gross salary. From 1 July 2026, the super guarantee rate is 12% of your ordinary earnings, up to a maximum contribution base of $270,830 per year. This means if your annual gross salary is $158,080, your employer must contribute $18,969.60 to your super fund. The super is not deducted from your pay; it is an additional cost to your employer.

Tax and Medicare

Once you have your annual gross salary, you need to estimate your tax obligations. The Australian Taxation Office (ATO) publishes resident tax rates each year. For 2026–27, the rates are:

  • $0 – $18,200: nil
  • $18,201 – $45,000: 15% on excess over $18,200
  • $45,001 – $135,000: 30% on excess over $45,000
  • $135,001 – $190,000: 37% on excess over $135,000
  • $190,001 and above: 45% on excess over $190,000

In addition, the Medicare levy is generally 2% of your taxable income. There are no low-income thresholds for the Medicare levy in this estimate; the full 2% applies unless you are eligible for an exemption or reduction.

Using the AI engineer example of $158,080:

  • Tax on first $18,200: $0
  • Tax on $18,201 to $45,000: 15% of $26,800 = $4,020
  • Tax on $45,001 to $135,000: 30% of $90,000 = $27,000
  • Tax on $135,001 to $158,080: 37% of $23,080 = $8,539.60
  • Total tax: $39,559.60
  • Medicare levy: 2% of $158,080 = $3,161.60
  • Total deductions: $42,721.20
  • After-tax income: $115,358.80

This is an estimate only. It does not include the Medicare levy surcharge, HELP repayments, or salary packaging. Use the take-home pay page for a more detailed calculation.

Understanding Your AI Engineer Salary in Context

The Australian Bureau of Statistics (ABS) reports average weekly earnings. For May 2026, full-time adult ordinary time earnings were $2,083.70 per week, or about $108,352 per year. All employees (including part-time) averaged $1,579.20 per week. An AI engineer salary is often above these averages, reflecting the specialised skills in demand.

When comparing job offers, always consider the total package: base salary, super, any bonuses, and leave entitlements. The hourly conversion page can help you compare rates across different working hours.

Key Takeaways

  • Use the formula: hourly rate × hours per week × 52 to get annual gross.
  • Assume 38 hours per week for full-time unless otherwise specified.
  • Casual employees receive a 25% loading on top of the base rate.
  • Super is 12% paid on top, up to the maximum contribution base.
  • Tax rates and Medicare levy apply to your taxable income.
  • Always check the relevant award or agreement for your minimum entitlements.

Questions people ask next

Does the 25% casual loading apply to all hourly rates?

No. Casual loading is an additional 25% on top of the base hourly rate for casual employees covered by an award or the National Minimum Wage. It is not automatically added to every hourly rate. If you are a permanent employee (full-time or part-time), you do not receive casual loading. The [casual loading](/topics/casual-loading) page explains when it applies.

How is superannuation calculated on an annual salary?

Superannuation is paid on top of your gross salary at the super guarantee rate (12% from 1 July 2026). It is calculated on your ordinary earnings, up to the maximum contribution base of $270,830 per year. For example, if your annual gross is $80,000, your employer must contribute $9,600 to your super fund. See [super and packaging](/topics/super-and-packaging) for more.

What tax rates apply to an AI engineer salary in 2026–27?

The 2026–27 resident tax rates are: nil on the first $18,200, 15% on income from $18,201 to $45,000, 30% on $45,001 to $135,000, 37% on $135,001 to $190,000, and 45% above $190,000. The Medicare levy is generally 2% of taxable income. Use the [take-home pay](/topics/take-home) page for an estimate.
