Average Salary in Sydney: How to Convert Your Hourly Rate to Annual Pay

Annual pay is calculated as hourly rate × 38 hours × 52 weeks, assuming a standard full-time week.

Understanding Your Hourly to Annual Conversion

When you're offered an hourly rate or a salary, it helps to see the bigger picture. Whether you're comparing job offers or planning your budget, converting your hourly pay to an annual figure gives you a clearer sense of your earnings. The standard formula is straightforward: multiply your hourly rate by the number of hours you work each week, then by 52 weeks in a year. For most full-time roles, we assume a 38-hour week, as set by the Fair Work Act. This assumption is used throughout our hourly conversion tool.

For example, if you earn $30 per hour and work 38 hours per week, your annual gross pay would be $30 × 38 × 52 = $59,280. This calculation does not include overtime, penalty rates, or allowances. It's a base estimate.

The Average Salary in Sydney and National Benchmarks

When discussing the average salary in Sydney, it's important to note that the Australian Bureau of Statistics (ABS) publishes national averages rather than city-specific medians. The most recent ABS Average Weekly Earnings data (May 2026) shows full-time adult ordinary time earnings of $2083.70 per week nationally. This equates to an annual salary of approximately $108,352 (assuming 52 weeks). However, this is a national average for full-time employees, not a median for any particular job or location. The average salary in Sydney may differ due to industry mix and cost of living, but we do not have a precise Sydney-specific figure here. For a more tailored view, refer to our average pay resources.

The ABS also reports all employees total earnings of $1579.20 per week, which includes part-time workers. When comparing the average salary in Sydney, consider which measure is relevant for your situation. Full-time ordinary time earnings are more appropriate for full-time roles.

Minimum Wage, Award Rates, and Casual Loading

The Fair Work Commission sets the National Minimum Wage each year. From 1 July 2026, the minimum is $26.44 per hour, or $1004.90 per week for a 38-hour week. If you work casually, you are entitled to a 25% loading on top of the base rate, making it $33.05 per hour. This loading compensates for the lack of paid leave and other entitlements. Many industries have award rates that are higher than the minimum. Always check your specific award or agreement. Our minimum wage page has more details.

When using our timesheet, you enter your base hourly rate. If you are a casual, you can select the checkbox to add 25% casual loading. Do not enter a rate that already includes loading; let the tool calculate it.

Fortnightly Pay and Budgeting

Many Australians are paid fortnightly. To find your fortnightly gross pay, simply multiply your weekly pay by two. For a full-time worker on the minimum wage, weekly pay is $1004.90, so fortnightly is $2009.80 before tax. For someone on the national average weekly earnings of $2083.70, fortnightly pay is $4167.40. This can help with budgeting and comparing to salary offers that are quoted annually.

Tax and Medicare Levy

Your annual gross pay is subject to income tax and the Medicare levy. For the 2026–27 financial year, the resident tax rates are:

  • $0 – $18,200: nil
  • $18,201 – $45,000: 15% on excess over $18,200
  • $45,001 – $135,000: 30% on excess over $45,000
  • $135,001 – $190,000: 37% on excess over $135,000
  • Over $190,000: 45% on excess over $190,000

The Medicare levy is generally 2% of your taxable income. However, low-income earners may receive a reduction. We use the 2025–26 single reduction thresholds because the 2026–27 thresholds were not confirmed. For a more accurate estimate, use our take-home pay calculator.

Superannuation – Paid on Top

Employers must pay superannuation guarantee contributions of 12% of your ordinary earnings. This is paid on top of your salary, not deducted from it. For example, if your annual gross salary is $60,000, your employer contributes an additional $7,200 to your super fund, up to the maximum contribution base of $270,830 per year. Super is not included in your take-home pay but is a valuable part of your total compensation package. Learn more on our super and packaging page.

Putting It All Together: An Example

Let's take a casual worker earning the minimum wage. Base rate: $26.44 per hour. With casual loading of 25%, the effective rate is $33.05 per hour. For a 38-hour week, weekly pay is $33.05 × 38 = $1255.90. Fortnightly: $2511.80. Annual gross: $1255.90 × 52 = $65,306.80. After tax and Medicare (using the 2026–27 rates and assuming no other deductions), the estimated take-home pay would be lower. Super is calculated on the base ordinary earnings (without casual loading) at 12%: $26.44 × 38 × 52 = $52,269.76 base, super = $6,272.37.
