Calculate Take Home Pay Australia: Hourly to Annual Salary with Tax and Super

For a 38-hour week, annual gross = hourly rate × 38 × 52. This guide explains how to calculate take home pay Australia, including tax, Medicare, and super, and distinguishes the National Minimum Wage from award rates.

Calculate Take Home Pay Australia: From Hourly Rate to Annual Salary

If you want to calculate take home pay Australia, the first step is converting your hourly rate to an annual figure. The standard formula is: hourly rate × hours per week × 52 weeks. For full-time employees, we assume a 38-hour week (the ordinary hours under most awards and the National Employment Standards). This gives you your gross annual salary before tax and super.

The Basic Formula

Annual gross = hourly rate × 38 × 52. For example, at the National Minimum Wage of $26.44 per hour (from 1 July 2026) the annual gross is $26.44 × 38 × 52 = $52,241.44. If you work fewer or more hours adjust the weekly hours accordingly. Our timesheet lets you enter your exact hours and rate to see the instantly.

Fortnightly Pay Many employers pay fortnightly. To find your gross weekly pay = hourly rate × hours per week. So fortnightly = (hourly × hours) × 2. For a 38-hour week at $30/week weekly = $1,140 fortnightly = $2,280. This is useful for budgeting between pay cycles.

National Minimum Wage vs Award Rates The Fair Work Commission sets the National Minimum Wage each year. From 1 July 2026 it is $26.44 per hour for a full-time employee not covered by award. However most employees are covered by a modern award or enterprise agreement which often set higher minimum rates specific industries and roles. For example a retail employee might have a higher base rate under the General Retail Industry Award. Our pay guides and reference tables can help you find the correct award rate for your job.

It important to note that the National Minimum Wage is a floor, not a median. If you are looking for the typical pay for a particular occupation the Australian Bureau of Statistics publishes average weekly earnings. For full-time adult adult ordinary time earnings in May 2026 the average was $2,083.70 per week before tax. That is an average across all industries not the median for your specific job. Use our average pay page for more context.

Casual Loading If you are a casual employee you are entitled to a casual loading of 25% on top of the base hourly rate. This compensates for not receiving paid leave. On our timesheet. Casual loading also applied to award rates where applicable. See our casual loading page for details.

Superannuation Paid on Top Super guarantee is currently 12% of your ordinary time earnings paid by your employer on top of your gross salary. It is not deducted from your pay. For 2026–27 the maximum contribution base is $270,830 meaning super only calculated on earnings up to that amount. Our calculator estimates super as 12% of your ordinary earnings (the gross annual figure from the formula) but note that does not include overtime allowances or salary sacrifice. Tax and Take-Home Pay To calculate take home pay Australia you need to deduct income tax and Medicare levy from your gross annual salary. The 2026–27 resident tax rates are:

  • $0 – $18,200 nil
  • $18,200 – $45,000 15% of excess over $18,200 $45,001 – $135,000 $4,020 plus 30% of excess over $135,001 – $190,000 $31,020 plus 37% of excess over $190,000 $190,001+ $51,420 plus 45% of excess over $190,000 Medicare levy generally 2% of your taxable income. Note that the Medicare levy reduction thresholds for singles and families for 2026–27 were not confirmed at the time of this guide; we use the 2025–26 thresholds for estimation purposes. Our take-home pay page provides a detailed breakdown.

Example: National Minimum Wage vs Award Let's compare a full-time employee on the National Minimum Wage ($26.44/hour) with one on a typical award rate of $30/hour (for illustration only; actual award rates vary).

  • NMW: $26.44 × 38 × 52 = $52,241.44 gross. Tax (using 2026-27 rates) = $5,436.22 (approx) Medicare = $1,044.83 net = $45,760.39. Super (12% of ordinary earnings) = $6,268.97 paid on top.
  • Award $30: $30 × 38 × 52 = $59,280 gross. Tax = $7,284 Medicare = $1,185.60 net = $50,810.40. Super = $7,113.60.

The award employee earns more gross and net and receives higher super. This illustrates why it's important to know your correct award classification. Use our job pay resources to find your rate.

Important Notes This calculator provides an estimate. It assumes the same hourly rate every week no unpaid overtime no penalty rates no allowances no salary sacrifice. This is an estimate not a determination of your pay or tax.
